‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

It was a hoax. They arrested the guy who was trying to scam them.
There are different notes. One was a hoaxer they determined really fast. The 1 mill to 6 mill though is the one they were still dealing with and dealing with as possibly legitimate. The other hoaxer they did arrest.

So why the heck didn't they pay the ransom last Thursday, when it was only $1 million ?
Apparently I missed a few posts. Just seeing this.

I would guess they were buying time to determine if legit or for LE to catch the person or find Nancy and/or take attn away from the real person that did it as it seems now they didn't pay by this 2nd deadline either...

Maybe, just maybe too, Savanna could afford either, and they were letting LE try to find her or determine if legit.

I personally have my own theory about it all but not sure of anything. I think there is major strategy going on here.

Not saying it means anything but Annie is the only sibling who hasn't said anything alone, both Savanna and Cameron have.

Maybe understandable since so many are suspecting her husband and a lot are thinking her too.

Early reporting indicated that Nancy Guthrie had been scheduled to attend an in-person church service in Tucson that morning and was reported missing after she failed to show up. According to the family source, that account is not accurate.

The source told Fox News that for years — dating back to the COVID pandemic — Nancy and a small group of close friends had a standing Sunday routine that did not involve attending church in person. Instead, the group would gather at one another’s homes to watch a New York–based church service via livestream.

The service was broadcast live from a New York church attended by Savannah Guthrie, the longtime "TODAY" show co-anchor and Nancy Guthrie’s daughter.

On Sunday, Feb. 1, Nancy was expected to be at a friend’s home to watch the livestream, as she had done every week. When she failed to arrive, members of the friend group became concerned.

According to the source, one of the friends contacted Annie — Nancy’s daughter and Savannah Guthrie’s sister — to report that Nancy had not shown up and could not be located.

The source emphasized that Nancy was never scheduled to attend a Tucson church service that day, contrary to some reports, and said the misunderstanding has led to confusion about the circumstances surrounding when she was first reported missing.

Thanyou for resolving that for us.

What we covered here

• Family’s plea: “Today” host Savannah Guthrie posted a video Monday, saying the family believes 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie is “still out there.” “We are at an hour of desperation,” she continued, “and we need your help.”

• Continuing investigation: The FBI says it has not identified a suspect or person of interest in the case, which is now in its second week. Additional FBI personnel from across the nation are deploying to Tucson, it said.

• Purported deadline: Guthrie’s possible abductors demanded $6 million by 5 p.m. today, CNN affiliate KGUN previously reported, citing a purported ransom note sent to the station. The note included a threat to Guthrie’s life if the deadline wasn’t met, according to KGUN.

The crime scene at Nancy Guthrie’s house is “contaminated,” because of how many people have visited the site, former New York police detective Michael Alcazar said Monday.

“News outlets have been at the crime scene, which has now contaminated the crime scene, which just makes it a little bit harder to process, because now you have more DNA and more fingerprints, more footprints in the crime scene,” Alcazar told CNN’s Erin Burnett.

NBC news just came on and someone being interviewed said that the ransom demand, may be coming from another country.

The ransom demand said they wanted the money in USD. If they were USA residents, they wouldn't ask for USD, it would be assumed they wanted American currency value.

I've heard that too. You'd think though that would have been noticed pretty quickly by the feds. So were they just playing this along while they are doing other things?

I thought too that the sheriff said yesterday we'd see activity last night and in the next couple of days at both homes or something like that. Yet not a thing is being reported.

I keep thinking they have something and we of course don't know what's going on but I'm starting to also wonder if they have anything. Common sense tells me they as we see in many cases but...

It does seem to me they were playing out the kidnapper thing for some reason, maybe to track the person or more likely to distract, or try to, from other things.

If they had processed it correctly before the media even showed up, the media wouldn't have contaminated it

Media is out of control in this one regardless. Or some of them are anyhow. It's one of those that they have gone completely overboard.

If responsible, they wouldn't encroach, the property is still OWNED by someone and is private property.

I myself hate when someone I don't want comes on my property or to my door, or calls me when I didn't ask for it. I think it should be totally illegal. It isn't though even if under the guise of knocking on the door and then grabbing video and photos.

This is about a missing elderly woman, isn't it?

Well Banfield is back at it with "standing by her prime suspect" thing. I'm not linking nor will I give her a view.

I don't care if she is right or wrong on if he is, what she did was over the top and out of line, affected the investigation and cared less while claiming to be a friend of the family and Savanna. Her leak (if there truly is such a person) should be fired as well. I note it seems to have stopped. She is no longer getting any inside info, new news, etc., and is late with repeat stuff of others as she is in no loop or with an "up there" source any longer. Gee, I wonder why

Watched a few things this morning. Haven't linked. This one I feel worth linking.

I agree with her. For one, she thinks they established other communication most likely, outside of public view. Not sure on that, but would make total sense. And a lot else does too.
