‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime​

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.


On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

Just started watching this. Now being said original ransom note said 1 million if by last Thursday, goes up to 6 million if before 5 p.m. tonight and if not, she will be dead. Just watching the rest of this myself.

Now, if it were me, I'd have a Swiss bank account already open. Once the money is in my Bitcoin account I'd tell them where the body is.

I'd do that from Bermuda, where I'd already be. I'd think that you could have the Bitcoin turned into money in a Swiss bank account.

IIRC, Swiss bank accounts are completely private and can't be traced.

Also , IIRC, Bermuda doesn't have an extradition agreement with the United States.

I looked up Tucson time. ? Right now it's 2 hours and 4 minutes away from 5 there. Not all states change with DST but some do so if you didn't look up the actual time...

Good point. I didn't think of that. So 5pm there, would be 7pm there.

Yeah, I always look it up because I know years ago on trips to Vegas I had to be real careful on flight times if we were there over DST change. And maybe AZ too, can't recall for sure with them. Because you might go out with an hour's difference and then you have two hour's difference before you fly back. I wish my states would not go along with DST. It isn't a federal law, a state can decide.

I like to catch lives on YT and so if the channel holder is in another time zone and it is upcoming I have to search to not miss the right time, or a trial, things like that, OR if the other way around I'm waiting for it way too many hours ahead of time and wondering why it isn't on.

So I just search for the area or state when something is upcoming. Habit now.

You know, I don't think we are necessarily going to know anything at or even just after 5 p.m. TMZ with their big mouths said that in the first note the kidnapper/s said it would take some length of time to get Nancy back home. They were using the amount of time they gave (I forget what amount) to draw a circle around Tucson as to where they could be holding her, to make a show of course. I just rolled my eyes as that is IF they were telling the truth which I entirely doubt they were. They are not going to give a hint as to their location or hers. Not if they have a brain cell.

Regardless though, that means it was basically saying, we get the ransom and she will be returned in this many hours.

We also don't know that payment was went ahead with despite Savanna saying they would pay...

I'm not sure why this most recent vid was put out but there was nothing about paying, getting her back and no talk to the kidnapper/s. I'm wondering if it wasn't TMZ's most recent b.s. that got her doing it. Their claim that the bitcoin acct. was empty and no money had been paid into it...

I think something else is going on here quite likely... I have my theory as to what or at least part of it... Probably shared by others.

Note they didn't pay the earlier, lower ransom... Buying time I'd say... Are they doing that here too...? Or an answer is close if not already known...?

I don't know enough about that to be sure but I know Venmo is that way, which isn't currency but the default shows all your transactions unless you know to turn it off and make it private. So I'm thinking it may be something on that order.

It was touching and heartbreaking but honestly there was no real hidden message in it imo. Says they are desperate and need everyone's help if you hear anything or know anything... I am not sure what the point of it is unless she felt a need OR they want a kidnapper to think that LE and them are no closer to finding someone.

Although it was heartfelt, I'd say it is a bit of a nothing burger as far as news or hints of anything...

I of course didn't mean it that way. And said as much in that it was touching and heartbreaking to try to be sure no one took me that way.

I'm just a bit lost on the reason for it. I think there is one though.

I'm totally gripped on this case and the family's heartbreak and how much worse it must be for them and all of us feel it but a millionfold for them. Well some of the family for sure, her for instance, the brother I think. The other remains a bit questionable to me for obvious reasons.

I was just trying to convey for those that could not turn sound on at work how it was. It did not appear to have a clear purpose like the others and they aren't saying anything without a purpose for the most part.
