‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

I would be nervous to walk into that garage at night at all. Look at all the foliage around it. I go through the back way when I come home, but it’s lit up and doesn’t have a bunch of bushes around, I have a camera watching every move.

I guess I’ve watched that many crime cases.

Their lighting laws are ridiculous. That was discussed in entin's and I've heard some others about it too.

That's why I'm wondering if she also had an attached garage because where they say the garage door opened and then shut in two minutes, it makes no sense it would be that one, it would have to be one she entered the home through because there was no need to go in that garage when she got home as she wasn't in her own car...! And it doesn't lead into the home.

I absolutely think that the lighting laws are completely unsafe. I heard about that too and was shocked at the lack of safety concerns.

Yep. Believe me I get it. I hate lights sometimes. And only living totally rurally do you remember what a night sky with stars is like. But I know not to expect that near town. There should be lighting for safety. And the skies aren't the same anyhow as if you get miles and miles away from town. They just aren't.

And even rural, we have floodlights and motion lights that either one can put on or turn on on their own.

I miss my property and the sunsets and the skies. As much as I hate winter, the sunsets in February of all months were soooo beautiful.

But in town I expect and want lighting. These are not ten acre or more properties. They aren't way out in the country. So long as your lights aren't pointed glaring into your neighbor's window and they have no neighbors that close anyhow, lighting should be allowed.

That Entin one was interesting today with that former border patrol agent. He also said he used to be a prison guard and he'd talk to the prisoners and they said they aren't going to strike their own neighborhoods like as to robberies and assaults and such, for robberies of course they pick the higher end places, and this is exactly too where people think they are safe, because they buy in a better area.

I'm not saying this has anything to do with what happened to Nancy but it sure makes for neighbors cameras probably viewing nothing much, etc. Or her own due to lighting.

He also said he would have brought lights as the sheriff and that the sheriff didn't when searching, etc., he was following the ordinance.

It was interesting and kind of a nice different interview/chat than everyone airing the same things.

But I agree, their lighting laws might bite the county in this case...

If the Sheriff didn't use lights, that's just stupid.

It has to be done, just do it!

New short video out from the family in response to latest letter saying they understand, will pay, etc. !! I'm watching Angenette live. I believe it was on Savannah's Instagram and other social media if anyone has access to any of that.
