‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

I just noticed on YouTube that they have been at Annie’s house again. Could it be because they heard from the kidnappers?
I don't think so. Camera flashes were seen inside the home, and it is thought the last day or so, that the family is no longer in the home.

All of that, IF true of course.

Others though were there besides Entin and reported the same thing about camera flashes inside the home. He was far from the only reporter there.

I've seen a few in chats tonight, or comments, saying if this turns out to be the SIL that it vindicates Ashleigh and like he77 it does. If they were trying to trap him, catch him, mislead him, her announcing he was a suspect seriously probably hindered that effort!

I like information in a case, but not at the cost of the case or investigation. She is disgusting.

That the son in law is somehow involved.
Even if he is, it doesn't absolve Ashleigh from anything imo, if anything it makes her worse. They were probably doing their best to not let him know they were onto him and she just blurted the cat out of the bag and whoever was leaking to her should be fired too.

What we covered here

• Family says “we will pay”: In a new video on social media pleading for their mother’s return, the Guthrie family said “we will pay.” Purported ransom notes had demanded millions in Bitcoin for her return and a second deadline is approaching on Monday.

• No suspects: There are still no suspects named as the search for Nancy Guthrie enters its seventh day. Law enforcement officials were seen at the home of Guthrie’s daughter Annie late Saturday, a day after drone footage showed deputies and agents searching the missing woman’s property.

• New message: Officials are probing the authenticity of a second message sent to KOLD on Friday about Nancy Guthrie. The note included sensitive information and no deadline, according to an anchor at the outlet.

Law enforcement activity seen at Annie Guthrie’s house

00:30

Hours after Savannah Guthrie released a video with her two siblings pleading for their mother’s return, at least three deputy sheriffs were seen at her older sister Annie Guthrie’s house late Saturday.

Three unmarked vehicles were parked in the driveway for several hours, while deputies were inside the residence.

While lights in the house appeared dim and shades were drawn, bright flashes were observed through the windows –– appearing as if authorities were taking photographs.

Officials left shortly after 10:30 p.m. local time with a bag and placed it in the back seat of one of the vehicles. One deputy sheriff was also seen wearing blue latex gloves.

There are still no suspects named in the search for Nancy Guthrie.

Nancy Guthrie was at her daughter Annie’s home the night before her disappearance. After dinner, family members dropped the elder Guthrie back at her home, which lies in a secluded, cactus-dotted community in the Catalina Foothills.

CNN has reached out to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI for further information.

CNN’s Bonney Kapp contributed reporting.

Seems to me the visit and photographs may be something to do with proof of life. Perhaps (hoping) Nancy has told the kidnappers something about the interior of Annie's home that they can confirm with those photos, proving she is still alive and that they have her.

It doesn't prove anything. A video of her speaking while holding that days newspaper is proof of life.

That's on TV shows, though. Which kidnapping case with a ransom demand in the US do you recall?

Also, one that the family has no way to communicate with the kidnapper other than putting videos on IG?

Just saying, this is unprecedented in the US in our time, btw. I'm not sure we have any recent history to refer to.

You lost me there? The family doesn't have to give the kidnapper proof of anything, the kidnapper has to give the family proof of life. There's no reason they'd take pictures to send the kidnappers.

They took something from the house in a bag. That could be the proof that they have her and the family are to bring that something to the exchange.
Payment is supposedly to be made to a bitcoin address. There wouldn't be an in person exchange. From what I understood from TMZ about the first note, they told them how long it would take them to bring her back after they were paid.

We don't know whether that has already been done. There is also speculation that the kidnappers gave info about the item on the roof that was retrieved by the FBI.
While possible, it doesn't seem that likely. Telling them there is something outside of Nancy's house proves nothing. Inside might. Outside even a drone could see anything so it wouldn't be proof.

I keep hearing retired LE type guys saying this isn't the way it's done, like no communication with the family, etc. I have to laugh at that, not that anything about this is funny, because why wouldn't a kidnapper that had any brains be sure to not be easily identified by having no contact and even the money is not an in person exchange which is often on TV when they catch the guy. They also say the kidnapper isn't all that smart... Well, not sure I agree with that either. No one has been arrested yet have they? Do they even know the author of the notes?

I was watching reporters there live last night. Most saw them take nothing but someone did say they put something I thought they said into the trunk of one car. Who knows what's true re that since the reports varied.
