‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

According to the neighbor, it looked like she'd recently had some work done on her roof and she told the FBI.

So it appears that the FBI was looking for evidence into who did the work.
I'd think they could find that out from her bank account, she isn't going to pay for a big job like that in cash, if it's even the case.

I don't think that tip led to them being on the roof and taking something off. It was a minor tip and she didn't even say when she told them that.

So FBI were looking around the property in the brush. Is it likely she is somewhere on the property?
It sounds to me like they were just checking off boxes they hadn't for the most part. Unless they used the search to try to cover what they were really after.

If they are looking for her body near the home, then they are not believing the ransom notes. Or it's routine or a redo, going back to square one.

Why they'd take her car is beyond me either. Maybe it's some dumb thing they have to do to make sure they did everything, showing she didn't go back out that night or something. Or that "they" didn't force her to drive it like to an ATM but that makes no sense. It was at the property.

Sometimes evidence from one search leads to a warrant for another search.

Or it's one big show and it let them move reporters away too.

I'm more curious about why LE, including a forensic vehicle, were at Annie's again. However, that is IF news even has that right about the forensic vehicle. I don't think it's odd LE does go over there to talk to and apprise the family or ask things or tell them about new ransom letters, why wouldn't they? Makes perfect sense to me if that's where the family is, that's where they would go.

She has pizzed me off many a time these past few years on coverage on some cases. I was just getting to deciding I MIGHT like her when here she goes again, the worst thing yet!! I can't even recall the other cases she's ticked me off on any longer, but there's quite a few.

I'm done with her. I've left some not nice comments under a few of her videos recently. I'm hardly alone in doing that either and every chat has people going on about how vile she is. And TMZ too.

I hope she's apologized to the son in law. I can see a lawsuit on the horizon.

I don't know that I clear the SIL, thanks to her of course, which doesn't make me happy but yeah, she was out of line totally.

I heard something yesterday about threats of a lawsuit against her, I would assume that is by the family, but not sure, didn't catch it all.

I do hope she pays for what she's doing. Pays big. She and Megan were on yesterday trying I think to do a bit of damage control and show the things she was "right" about. I don't think the SIL was even mentioned. She was saying how she was right about this, and about that, and that some of what she got came from the sheriff himself. Etc. I think I talked of it and maybe linked it upthread. Normally I wouldn't even watch when I'm disgusted with someone but I did and left a nasty comment, but a true one. Many others are doing the same.

Take it for what it's worth. Entin walks the line a lot too and borderline crosses it imo. But he's better than Banfield.

He says it is "thought" that Savanna and Annie (and I assume the hub) have left the home and he doesn't know if they are staying somewhere else or what. Now my first thought is who could blame them? With all of the media presence.

My second though, which is nothing but pure speculation, is that the police are going to search or take over the home possibly. And maybe gave them the chance or told them to stay somewhere else for the time being. That's pure speculation on my part BUT I have seen it done before.

I don't like thinking that way and it's all thanks to Banfield isn't it? I'd not think nearly the same of LE being at their home when they have been if not for her. It's natural for them to be talking to the family, helping them respond to ransom demands or discussing whether they should, and all that sort of thing.

The above video was a bit interesting, and a bit different than the usual fare. He went out into the terrain a bit with a former border patrol agent who lives in that area and they had a somewhat long talk about various things. That agent has actually seen the ransom letters so he must have some connections...?

Likable guy.

That lighting ordinance sounds crazy and sure doesn't help with safety in that area. If you are in or near a city you are generally going to have lights but they can't? More was said about that and how lights weren't used with the search.

Also, an interesting thought was that IF she was kidnapped and they took her to Mexico or even if they didn't, someone could get her drugs for her in Mexico and he even said in the US from Mexico too there are places and maybe even in Tucson who sell them, but under the table. I don't know how likely either possibility is, that they took her into Mexico, or that they are just getting her drugs there, etc. but it would give some hope she could be alive and getting her meds.

It was an interesting conversation and not all the same old, same old that 99 million reporters are rehashing every second.

I also saw Banfield had a new one up on her Drop Dead Serious. I passed on it, no thanks.

You don't think it was a camera on her property they just had not taken that was hers?

I think I'm so used to some of the reporters making something out of things from just seeing something... And they've been wrong...

I'm just wondering why you think there is a who behind it, UNLESS LE put it up, is that what you're thinking? If so, that would be interesting...
I have no idea. The options are basically it is Nancy's camera, the perp stuck it up there, or LE did it. I'm interested in which option is correct. This case is bizarre, so I'm considering any angle.

It looks like her car. Clearly I don’t know how to post a picture.

Is that a Subaru Forester? That's a very sensible, long term car.

I'm not convinced they were looking for a body. For one, they didn't have a cadaver dog there last night that we saw. Also, I've learned that Southern Arizona has unique soil. And from the looks of Nancy's landscaping, her yard has the soil. I think you would need a jackhammer to bury a body.

I'm wondering too about towing her car. Maybe trying to see who all has been in it? Also, is it just me or did her car look intentionally parked to the side? Maybe Annie pulled in there a lot?

My mom didn't park right in the middle of the garage after Dad died but she sure didn't leave room for 2 vehicles.

If it's a camera (are we sure of that?), my first guess would be Nancy's. However, why there'd be a need to take it now after all this time, no idea.

Second guess is that it is LE's but why take it down now? Unless they are about done and about to make an arrest?

As for the perp, I can't really see a reason a perp would do that? I've tried to think of a real reason and can't really come up with anything that makes much sense.

I don't think they were expecting to find a body there either. The Entin video I posted today above he talked to a former border patrol agent and he said he thinks they've searched already with border patrol dogs (he mentioned some branch of that) and that they are the best of the best he said and that if they didn't find her, then unlikely she's there. I don't think it's likely anyhow. That video also showed the terrain, the dirt, the brush.

My mom parks to one side but that's because hers is a two door garage, one vehicle through each door. I'd have to look back, was it far to one side? I know it wasn't in the middle. It was a one door right?

One double door I think.

I’m not sure what this link means but I guess it means that she had the ROOF CLEANING and then there was something on the roof? After it was clean? I’ll keep reading probably the answer is coming.

ETA: I don’t know why there was random capitalization in my sentence up there. Weird.

A tow truck was seen towing a vehicle from the driveway of Nancy Guthrie’s home Friday evening as the investigation into her disappearance continued.

The truck towed what looked like an SUV from the property. FBI agents were seen earlier in the garage of the home where a blue SUV was parked.

It was not immediately clear why the vehicle was removed.

Fox News Digital later observed the tow truck on the road accompanied by a police escort from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

The development comes as President Donald Trump said Friday that “a lot” has taken place in the last few hours in the investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie and that he believes answers may be imminent.

This is really an excellent link. I even found a garage photo.

I think it tells us that neighbors are trying to be helpful, all are, with tips. It's not like she saw any work done on it either but was going by a drone pic or something so I don't give it a lot of weight, not that it hurts to point out she may have had someone just do some cleaning or redo of the roofs and to look into that. I don't know that that is why they were on the roof, we only saw someone on the one roof also, not both. She may have thought or hoped her lead led to something but I'm kind of doubtful that that was the reason.

I think she said resealed, which a fresh coat of sealant would definitely be clean, though.

I saw that one but couldn't have went back and separated it. To me that's normal parking if you are leaving space for someone else particularly or for a mower or things or anything else. My mom has a two car and she keeps one side free, even of stuff as when I was there, I parked in there, my nephew has, etc. if someone visiting. However, we have winter and she has a short city driveway if one can call it that and to get them all of the street, it makes more room for one guest to go into the garage so more can park on the driveway. Or to put them in if just one guest so the car stays warm and does not have to be cleaned off in the morning.

I guess my point is I don't think that's odd parking. And it's probably habit. Most likely.
