‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

Maybe they moved furniture from in front of a safe or something like that. Then got her to open it?
Well I'm not even sure that's true. There was no link given. I hadn't heard big things were moved and that she couldn't have done it. So not sure it's fact. Has anyone else heard that?

Which they would, if it was an inside job.
True.

Here's a thought I just had. IF things were moved or obviously wrong in the home then why did the family wait an hour or something like that before calling 911? I mean there couldn't have been anything to obvious to family then right?

I want to point out again that I'm not sure things being moved is fact. There was no link and I've sure not heard that elsewhere.

Just trying to ensure things that might not be don't become fact.

The thought too of that maybe it was someone who had done work for her is a possibility. I'm watching the rest of that where they are talking like if maybe a gardener, pool person, etc. and so on. I don't think it's necessarily a belief but is something they are discussing.

No security system as to alarms he says. Well we could figure that or it would have been noticed sooner. I wonder if she has a life alert she wears... Probably not.

What IS the odd thing here is that they took her. It's not quite as odd that someone may have been robbing her, etc.

I'm still wondering about the ATM thing... THAT has happened before... The victim has the PIN, the vic is the one who shows on camera at the ATM, etc.

I know someone who keeps a habit of keeping cash in the home. She does so because she gets a break if she pays the one guy who does work for her in cash. A break in price.. One time she was talking to him on the phone and telling him she had her cash, got it out and counted it when told how much, and she had people working on something in her kitchen, she was in the living room. She then went to do something else and later found that money gone. When she thought about it, it was a no brainer as to who had seen her get it out and put it back.

I bring that up just to show it could be someone who had done work for her and knew she kept cash, could access cash, or what was in the home, etc. Heck maybe she went to a safe to get money to pay someone while they were there.

Why else would they take her? 1, she saw him or caught him doing something in her home or 2, they need her to get money for them. I think those are the two obvious likely things.

If it was someone who were to benefit from her death, imo this doesn't help because it's harder to declare a person dead that hasn't been found or is missing... So as far as family, I think that's a big one to consider, although I guess someone could still take her to get cash and keep her, etc. but it seems unlikely.

However, there are things that make it seem as if it could be someone close, knew her habits, where she lived and so on.

I sure hope she's found alive but kind of hard to imagine a scenario where she would be.

He didn't confirm her purse was there but he did confirm they have her cell phone. The sheriff I mean.

Getting to the last couple of minutes of this. He did say things both outside and inside were concerning... He is very adamant that he can't say what in the home alarmed them like as Ashleigh asked it has to be either blood or signs of a struggle and altercation, etc. Paraphrasing. He will not confirm what.

The home both outside and inside had some concerns for them. He also said the family saw things to be worried about first and then when LE arrived, they saw things too to show there was reason to be concerned.

I guess maybe the hour was to do with family arriving, trying to ascertain if she was anywhere inside or outside, then started noticing things and then called 911 and when sure she wasn't on the property as well.

Well, I just wanted to finish covering what the sheriff said in this one with Ashleigh. This way people can watch but if they don't have a chance, they can read it here. Just have two minutes left.

Well maybe @Guess Who can clarify if the comment was opinion or not.

Family taking an hour before calling LE - maybe checking the property and with neighbours and then calling others to check could take an hour.

And her car was there. Another reason is she could have died or been killed during the break-in or in any subsequent abduction so they have disposed of her body.

Blood, signs of forced entry found at home of Savannah Guthrie’s mother: Reports

Signs of forced entry and blood have been found at the home of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie.

On Monday, Nanos called Guthrie’s home “a crime scene,” pointing to signs that she did not leave on her own. Guthrie has “some physical ailments, has some physical challenges, [and] is in need of medication,” Nanos said.

Investigators believe Guthrie may have been taken in a nighttime kidnapping, as her phone, wallet, and car were still at her home, a person familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press.

Savannah Guthrie’s Mom’s Pacemaker Stopped Syncing With Apple Watch Before Disappearance

Nancy Guthrie’s pacemaker stopped syncing with her Apple devices on Sunday, the same day she was reported missing from her Arizona home.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said they believe Guthrie, 84, was abducted from her Tucson home, noting her limited mobility. Since then, an unidentified law enforcement source revealed to Fox News that Guthrie’s pacemaker stopped syncing with her Apple devices at around 2 a.m. on Sunday — which is when investigators suspect she was taken from her home against her will.

According to the source, Guthrie’s phone and Apple watch were found inside the home. While Guthrie had a doorbell camera, it was allegedly missing when police responded to the home on Sunday.

Nanos described the Tucson home as a “crime scene” during Monday’s press conference. Additionally, sources told The Post about evidence — specifically blood and signs of forced entry– which suggested foul play is involved in Nancy Guthrie’s ongoing disappearance.

That doesn't bode well.

None of the information we are getting is good. So, even 84 year old ladies living at home with a security system aren't safe anymore, either?
From what I understood from the sheriff, she had no security system, Ashleigh asked him and he said no, not if she meant security with alarms. She did supposedly have cameras but now above it sounds like the person took off a ring doorbell so unsure how many she had or if it was just doorbells, etc.

So when things stopped syncing is the time they figure naturally that she was taken, etc. This would likely indicate the person was not in the home when she got home but broke in later OR rang the bell or something... What time was she dropped off, I think it was said ten to ten or ten or ten thirty, somewhere thereabouts, so that's some hours before 2...

Did whoever dropped her off go in or see her to the door...? I heard family but an article above said a friend. The sheriff said a family member.

If she couldn't get around well then one would think someone would see her safely into the home.

Was all okay then? That person may have stayed or left and likely left so someone broke in later...? I'd of course be talking to that person, last one to see her.

If you rip off a ring doorbell, apparently you are not disguised or disguised well enough or your car isn't, something isn't...

LE has sure talked all along though as if they have video footage to go through and so on.

So she has a pacemaker. I wondered about the inability to walk 50 yards. That could be due to legs, mobility, but also could be due to heart, need for oxygen, etc.

I knew someone many decades ago with a pacemaker, and I'd think they are even better now. She was a very active older lady, it did not interfere with her activity.

So that alone isn't going to limit her ability to walk a distance imo.

Was she in the habit of taking off the Apple Watch? I'd think not for safety's sake. So he made her maybe? If so and in taking off the ring doorbell, this was thought out it would seem...

Boy I could go from total stranger to someone close with the various things in this one...

So what was the purpose of her abduction? I don't get it at present unless it is a ransom situation or she died/was killed when they broke in and robbed her?
However the link above indicates she was alive as it says this :-

"Guthrie’s pacemaker stopped syncing with her Apple devices at around 2 a.m. on Sunday — which is when investigators suspect she was taken from her home against her will."

I don't see that someone close would need to do this crime at 2 a.m. either.

Post 69 states her phone, wallet and car were left at home and post 70 says her Apple watch was also left at home and the ring doorbell was pulled off.

I only hope that they have some vehicle tracking information in the area at that time.

I wonder if she had an ECG app or something on her watch.

An electrocardiogram (also called an ECG or EKG) is a test that records the timing and strength of the electrical signals that make the heart beat. By looking at an ECG, a doctor can gain insights about your heart rhythm and look for irregularities.

The ECG app can record your heartbeat and rhythm using the electrical heart sensor on Apple Watch Series 4 or later and all models of Apple Watch Ultra* and then check the recording for atrial fibrillation (AFib), a form of irregular rhythm.

The ECG app records an electrocardiogram which represents the electrical pulses that make your heart beat. The ECG app checks these pulses to get your heart rate and see if the upper and lower chambers of your heart are in rhythm. If they’re out of rhythm, that could be AFib.

But there's also this...

1. Can I wear a smart watch if I have a pacemaker?
Yes, you can generally wear a smart watch if you have a pacemaker, but it’s important to follow specific guidelines to avoid interference. Maintain a safe distance—typically at least 6 inches—between your smart watch and pacemaker, and avoid placing the watch near your chest, especially in a breast pocket. Consult with your healthcare provider before using a smart watch to ensure it’s compatible with your specific cardiac device.

2. Are smart watch ECG and heart rate monitoring feature safe for pacemaker use?
ECG and heart rate monitoring features are usually safe when used responsibly, but it’s essential to avoid holding the smart watch too close to the pacemaker. The ECG feature, in particular, uses electrical currents that may cause electromagnetic interference if positioned too close to your implanted device. Consult your healthcare provider if you plan to use these features regularly.

My son's dad had a pacemaker and it created an alarm to authorities when it went into working mode. Not sure which authorities were notified automatically, but wouldn't that have happened in all cases? I have no idea if smart devices were part of the process or not. I don't know a ton about it and son is still in mourning, so don't want to bring it up to him now. But, I do know the alerts saved his dad from death more than once over the years.

Or somebody just had their wording incorrect and her tracker quit showing a heartbeat at that time.

I think that's why we are so caught up in it as it's hard to understand or guess what the reason was here and so on, PLUS of course an 80 something year old women is just so vulnerable and easy for even us strangers to be worried about her.

Yes, i don't get taking her. I just don't get it. I've thrown some reasons out like bank cards, getting money for him, etc. Maybe he was surprised and just couldn't bring himself to kill her so took her with until he figures things out...?

It's very odd.
