‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

That's the first note clearly. We don't know what was said in the second note.

The thing is, if they don't have Nancy or this is a hoax, and they pay, I can see tons of bad people coming out of the woodwork demanding ransoms.

However, I can see the family wanting to pay, especially if LE has been unable to determine the notes are a hoax and they have given proof of life. Everyone last night though was convinced now that she is dead based on the words of Savannah, etc. and they are only paying to get her body back. I wasn't convinced of that but it is what most thought.

We probably wouldn't even know what the family is saying to the kidnapper except they have to make their videos public as they have no way of contact.

Well I thought I'd get up this morning and there would be news with so much going on yesterday. Apparently nothing any different though since the last reports of LE at Annie's.

Most of the reporters have said the last few days that they don't think the family is there any longer... If that's the case, LE is not going there to confer with the family. If it's not the case, I still don't see what they would be doing there so late, I can see going there to question or confer but not to take pictures nor leave with anything...? If the family truly is staying somewhere else, why not just go there then?

LE is just ramping up the talk of the son in law and Annie by doing so.

We have known for some days the 2nd deadline is tomorrow re the alleged kidnapper.

I saw someone say in a chat last night that LE can track when and where the bitcoin money goes at the other end, when the kidnapper removes the money from the account. Does anyone know if this is true?

Something is definitely up here. Not sure what. Whatever was in this last note was different the way it sounds. The one reporter I think from KOLD said she wouldn't classify this one as a ransom note but said there were things in it to show it was the same sender since it was a different IP address.

Then we have them looking for a car and/or person at gas stations, etc. And the activity at Annie's last night...

The agreement to pay...

I'm not sold on anything still.

I keep hearing retired LE type guys saying this isn't the way it's done, like no communication with the family, etc. I have to laugh at that, not that anything about this is funny, because why wouldn't a kidnapper that had any brains be sure to not be easily identified by having no contact and even the money is not an in person exchange which is often on TV when they catch the guy. They also say the kidnapper isn't all that smart... Well, not sure I agree with that either. No one has been arrested yet have they? Do they even know the author of the notes?
I don’t think they know or they aren't telling us. Whoever this is, is savvy enough to be using online tip forms.

I think too there is a certain tech savviness here or good research. In addition to the online tip form, they are using supposedly a secure server and masking a web of IP info or what I mean is where just tracking back through one isn't doing it for LE, it's a multitude of purposefully many IPs, I don't have the right words but I know what they mean.

I've heard so many retired LE say the guy isn't very smart, but I'm not so sure so yeah. Smart in some ways no doubt as they haven't gotten her back or taken him down yet have they?

I've had my fill of this one other than when I see something that might be new or breaking. Not my fill of worrying about Nancy but my fill of what is going on with reporting on it, and the absolute jumping to conclusions immediately out there, both by reporters and some public. It's sickening.

I've not come to a single certain conclusion but that's not the same as some out there.

And the minute cameras were seen at Annie's or so is thought with the flashes, and LE, last night everyone, well many, were saying it was all staged and she was killed at their home and never was taken home. I don't deny that's a possibility but I sure have not jumped to that as a certainty. In fact, I thought of it early on, of course it is a possibility.

Even Entin is walking the line really close here. He was the first one I saw saying there were camera flashes going off in the home. And that LE was there.

He's the one who got the blood in front of the door and was speculating that LE even missed it. They did not MISS it. For goodness sakes. Used knocking on the door as an excuse to take photos of it. Legal? Maybe. Shouldn't be though.

I suspect reporters and through them the public are being sent in several different directions for a reason, and that reason is because LE can't do their job here without it being known or total interference.

Some of the things going on just aren't connecting where they make sense imo. But they are sending reporters all over the place with their attention.

Well, this one actually has flashes in the garage, apparently being photographs. My first thought last night was luminol or Bluestar. Take a look.

I don't think it was right for Banfield to say the SIL was a suspect but of course on hearing that, it's hard for it to leave the mind. And they do keep doing things there...

I've also thought that the notes could still be from a family member or someone close. That's probably as close of a leaning as I have but it's not full on leaning by a long shot.

I did think from the start it's someone who knows a lot so someone probably closer than just a passing person. Because of all of the knowledge about cameras and Nancy and so on.

That's on TV shows, though. Which kidnapping case with a ransom demand in the US do you recall?

Also, one that the family has no way to communicate with the kidnapper other than putting videos on IG?

Just saying, this is unprecedented in the US in our time, btw. I'm not sure we have any recent history to refer to.
Agreed. Kidnapping is not common in the United States at all anymore. But it is still happening in other countries of the world.

They’re probably doing something that none of us have even thought of.

Hmm. And flashes in another part of the home which is what I heard too. And the family apparently gone. Heard that more than a few times over last couple of days.

And stuff about the Circle K and them asking to see video...

The flashes in garage interest me more than some things I think. They've been centered on the cars, both Annie's and now Nancy's too. Now it's their garage. That's where she was visiting. Allegedly.

I do think something is definitely up here. Unless it's a flurry of activity to make all think they have something but I think not, I think something is up.

It's getting hard to ignore their interest in Annie's place BUT I've seen before where family or a loved one will take the hits so focus can be on them so the real perp thinks they are not close to him or onto him.

It is appearing though as if.... I'll leave that unfinished.

I'm not much of an MSM watcher but the Fox one I put up above is a bit interesting. For one thing, they have a chart up about all of the differences in the 3 messages the family has put out, who has spoken, how long they were, what the content in each was and what was not said in this last one, etc. Among a few other things pointed out.

I'm still going to be posting updates.

The world has already convicted Annie and her husband. I'm just over here, clueless.

Not everybody needs to know if you click on links or not. Simply do or don't. No need for any explanation at all.
If I were you, I wouldn't accuse me of overexplaining lol. Pots shouldn't call kettles black, and either of us could be either the pot or the kettle at times LMAO.

Grumpy today?
