Young Woman Still Missing Near Orlando, Person of Interest Found Dead: Sheriff

Police are still searching for a missing 19-year-old Florida woman who was last seen Friday at an apartment complex near an Orlando college, while authorities said the man who's a person of interest in her disappearance has been found dead from an apparent suicide.

Miya Marcano was last seen around 5 p.m. on Sept. 24 at the Arden Villas complex located near the University of Central Florida, Orange County Sheriff's Office officials said.

Marcano's father, Marlon, told WESH his daughter lived at the complex and worked in the leasing office but he did not hear from Marcano after she got off work.

Marcano was scheduled to take a flight to Fort Lauderdale later in the evening, but never boarded the plane. Her family traveled to Orlando this past weekend to speak with police and Orange County Sheriff's Office deputies.

At a news conference Monday, Orange County Sheriff John Mina said 27-year-old Armando Manuel Caballero, who was a person of interest in her disappearance, was found dead earlier in the day.

Caballero, a maintenance worker at the apartment complex where Marcano lived and worked, is believed to have killed himself at an apartment in nearby Seminole County, Mina said.

Caballero, who had worked at the complex since June, had demonstrated a romantic interest in Marcano but had been "repeatedly rebuffed," Mina said.

Mina said an arrest warrant had been issued for Caballero for burglary after someone used a maintenance key fob to access Marcano's apartment on Friday.

"Miya is still missing, her disappearance is suspicious, and our detectives and the family members obviously suspect foul play," Mina said. "We are still doing everything possible we can to find her."

Marcano graduated from Flanagan High School in Pembroke Pines last year, and some of her family still lives in South Florida. She is five feet tall and weighs 130 pounds with brown hair and green eyes.

"ORLANDO (CBSMiami/CNN) – A body found in the woods over the weekend near an Orlando apartment complex is that of missing Pembroke Pines teen Miya Marcano.

The Orange County medical examiner positively identified the remains as those of the 19-year-old who went missing more than a week ago."

Rest in peace.

That poor family. Even though a trial and years of it is a horrible thing to go through, I also can't imagine not being able to seek justice nor one day being able to tell the perp what you think of him and they won't have that. The only consolation is that he won't get out of prison nor hurt another soul since he killed himself.

May Miya RIP and her family find some solace.

Family of Miya Marcano files lawsuit against apartment complex for negligence

The family of 19-year-old Miya Marcano has filed a lawsuit against the apartment complex where she lived and worked before she was found dead, claiming the complex was negligent.

The lawsuit, which was filed Monday night in the 9th Judicial Circuit Court in Orange County, names Arden Villas, its parent company The Preiss Company and the estate of 27-year-old Armando Caballero.

The lawsuit alleges that while working for the complex, Marcano was never made aware by management that Caballero “had a criminal background, a history of harassing women, nor was she aware that Caballero would have unsupervised and/or free access to her apartment.”

Caballero is suspected of killing Marcano. Caballero was found dead shortly after Marcano was reported missing. Her body was found days later.

Investigators said Caballero used a master key to enter Marcano’s apartment. Detectives said Caballero had shown a romantic interest in Marcano before, but she repeatedly turned him down.

The complaint states that “Caballero, who was much older than [Marcano], appeared to be interested in [Marcano] and this made her extremely uncomfortable. [Marcano] expressed her concerns to employees of the [Arden Villas], as well as to her parents who were concerned that … the manager of the [Arden Villas] was not taking the safety concerns of the employees and tenants very seriously. Management at the Arden Villas had a reputation for ignoring the complaints made by both tenants and employees.”

The complaint states that the complex knew or should have known “that their employees and/or their agent’s employees, posed a danger to residents and invitees, by virtue of their access to Arden Villas,” and that since some employees were able to enter apartments at the complex, management “had a non-delegable duty to ensure that all such employees were monitored, as to ensure that employees that posed a threat to residents and/or invitees were not retained.”

According to the complaint, Marcano’s family is seeking damages in excess of $30,000.

I can't say that I blame them. From what we know if facts are facts, then what they allege here sounds pretty accurate...

Florida college student Miya Marcano died of undetermined homicide, autopsy says

A college student who authorities say was killed by a handyman at an apartment complex where they both worked died by “homicide of undetermined means,” according to an autopsy report.

The report obtained Monday by Miami television station WPLG says Miya Marcano’s body was found in October bound with duct tape near the dilapidated apartment complex following a massive week-long search.

The body was “nearly completely skeletonized” when found, according to the report, and black duct tape was found around her neck, wrists and ankles.

Orange-Osceola Chief Medical Examiner Joshua Stephany said he was unable to examine Marcano’s body for particular injuries because she was in an advanced state of decomposition.

Miya Marcano’s family attorney has more questions than answers following release of autopsy report

It labels her cause of death as a homicide by undetermined means and says her body was nearly completely skeletonized with duct tape on her neck, wrists, and ankles.

“The thing that’s floating in the family’s mind is what did [she] go through and that’s the thing that they really don’t know,” Washington said.

The parents of Miya Marcano, a 19-year-old found dead a week after she was last seen at her Florida apartment, are suing a sheriff’s office over how deputies handled her disappearance.

Two Orange County sheriff’s deputies were “deliberately indifferent” to her family’s fears that something terrible happened to Marcano after they never heard from her in September 2021, when she missed a flight to Miami, according to a lawsuit filed Sept. 25.

<snip>
Deputy Samir Paulino, who conducted an initial welfare check at Marcano’s apartment on Sept. 24, 2021, upon her mother’s request, ignored “obvious warning signs” of a crime scene — including a blood stain on Marcano’s pillowcase, an open bedroom window, broken jewelry and more, the complaint says.

An internal investigation later conducted by the sheriff’s office noted these signs should “warrant an immediate response from a detective,” according to the complaint.

Paulino and another deputy didn’t treat Marcano’s disappearance as urgent, according to the lawsuit, which says if they had, it could have saved her life or led to her body sooner.

Marcano’s parents, Marlon Marcano and Yma Su-Ling Scarbriel, are suing the sheriff’s office, Paulino and another deputy, accusing them of failing to act on their pleas to help their daughter.
