On June 17, 2009 a hiker walking near the Trans-Canada Highway discovered the body of a White/Caucasian woman in a small, one-person tent located in a wooded area near Miller Rapids Road, Kenora, Ontario, Canada. The woman, believed to be Canadian, was dressed in hiking-type clothing, and equipment for rugged hiking and camping was found near the body. A forensic evaluation revealed the woman was 35 to 55-years-old, 5’ 4, 110 pounds, and had shoulder-length, light brown hair. Cause of death was determined to be accidental carbon monoxide poisoning from a hibachi stove found in the tent. During the autopsy it was discovered the deceased had undergone major reconstruction surgery of her jaw and face, which was most likely conducted in a major surgical hospital 20-30 years prior to her death. Investigators believe she had died in the tent one day to a week prior to being discovered.

DNA Doe Project Status: Research in progress

"Millie" was a woman found deceased in a tent by an individual traveling through a wooded area near the Trans-Canada Highway.

She is currently undergoing testing by the DNA Doe Project.
  • She had a petite build and was physically active.
  • She had brown or dark blonde shoulder-length hair.
  • She possibly had dental braces in her adulthood.
  • She had spots on her lower teeth, possibly indicating she may have been a smoker.
  • She'd received extensive jaw surgery in her twenties to push her lower jaw back and bring her front jaw forward.
    • The surgery method consisted of cutting her jaw bones and wiring them together, an outdated method that was performed 20-30 years before she died. Because of this, wire sutures were in her jawbones.

DNA investigation continues in 13-year Kenora cold case

It’s been over 13 years since Kenora’s ‘Millie’ Jane Doe’s body was found near the Rideout area, and the mystery into her true identity continues to this day.

Unidentified Human Remains Canada is featuring Millie’s case this month with the goal of matching her DNA with those of possible family members in the northwestern Ontario area, to help bring closure to her family.

Unidentified Humans Remains Canada says Millie’s DNA matches reveal Danish ancestry and her ancestors may have immigrated from Denmark’s Jutland Peninsula to North America within recent generations, but they note this has been a challenging case for their genealogy team.
