Hawaii island police issue Amber Alert for missing 15-year-old girl; $1K reward offered​

Hawaii island police have issued an Amber Alert for a missing 15-year-old girl who may have been abducted near Waikoloa Beach Drive and urge anyone with information about her whereabouts to immediately call 911.

Mikella Debina was last seen at about 1:30 p.m. Friday in the area of Anaehoomalu Bay near Waikoloa Beach Drive. Police described the situation as urgent as “responsive action should be taken immediately” due to severe “significant threat to life or property.”

“She may be in the company of a local male described as being approximately 45-60 years old, 5 feet, 10 inches tall with an average build, and bareback wearing gray shorts,” police said in the news alert.
 

AMBER alert issued for 15-year-old girl believed abducted from Hawaii Island beach​

According to the victim’s aunt, Debina and her boyfriend were at the beach when the suspect approached them and held them at knifepoint.

“He had my niece tie up her boyfriend, blind fold him and then took her,” said Laurene Debina.

The girl’s aunt added that police detected a signal from Debina’s cellphone near the Kona airport — about 20 miles away — and found Debina’s bag with her dress nearby.


Teen Abducted After Boyfriend Tied Up at Knife Point​

Mikella’s aunt, Laureen DeBina, shared a Facebook post late Friday night.

“My niece and her boyfriend were held up at knife point south of Abays Beach,” she said, referencing a resort area near the Anaeho’omalu Bay. “Her boyfriend was tied up and she was taken! Please, please if anyone sees, hears or has any information please contact the police.”

In an interview with Hawaii News Now, Laureen DeBina said the suspect instructed her niece to “tie up her boyfriend, blind fold him, and then took her.”

DeBina also said police were able to detect a signal from Mikella’s cell phone near the Kona International Airport, nearly 20 miles away at Keāhole. There, police also found the teen’s bag and a dress.
 

Police: Hawaii Island teen abducted from beach found safe; suspect in custody​

Hawaii Island police confirm that 15-year-old Mikella Debina has been found safe in Hilo, a day after she was reported abducted from a secluded beach.

As of 4:30 p.m. Saturday, authorities have located and arrested 52-year-old Duncan Kealoha Mahi in connection to the kidnapping. He remains in custody.

Witnesses and family members said that Debina was rescued at Cafe Pesto in Hilo when good Samaritans recognized her and stepped in to help.

Debina’s mother, Cherese Cher Angelel, said “heroes ... ripped her from her abductor.”

According to Char Debina, Mikella Debina escaped her captor when he made a stop for food at Cafe Pesto in Hilo. The man reportedly left the teen in his vehicle and she fled as soon as she could. A Good Samaritan recognized the brown-eyed, freckled skin girl and removed her from the area and notified police around 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
