Details of Disappearance
Marjorie was last seen at Greenacres Grocery (now Belk's General Store) in her hometown of Greenacres City, Florida on May 27, 1984. She purchased cat food at approximately 3:00 p.m. The business is located just a few hundred feet from her home.

She may have stayed at the store until as late as 6:00 p.m. to play video games, or may have headed to a nearby park after leaving the store. She never returned home and has not been seen again. Her sister realized she was missing after she woke up at 8:30 p.m. She waited thirty minutes, then woke up their mother and told her Marjorie was gone.

Willis Rambo was considered a suspect in Marjorie's case for a time. He lived near her home with his brother, Charles "Chuck" Rambo. Marjorie had visited their house several times, and a witness had seen Charles give Marjorie money. After her disappearance, the Rambo brothers were charged with molesting Marjorie's six-year-old best friend. Authorities realized the girl was being abused when they interviewed her about Marjorie's disappearance.

Police searched the Rambo brothers' house and property after Marjorie went missing, but found no evidence to implicate them in her case. Both men denied any involvement in her disappearance.

Photos of Willis and Charles are posted with this case summary. They each pleaded guilty to lewd assault in the abuse of Marjorie's friend, and were sentenced to ten years' probation. In 1991, Willis was sentenced to four life terms in prison for sexually abusing his two stepdaughters. Charles now lives in Tennessee.

Victor George Wonyetye Jr. was a golf course worker in 1984 and is considered a suspect in Marjorie's case. A photo of him is posted with this case summary. He lived near her residence, he was reportedly seen outside the grocery store the day she disappeared, and he also attended a party in her neighborhood.

He had a criminal record dating back to the 1960s and has been convicted in the past of sexual assaults, among various other offenses. Wonyetye moved to New Hampshire shortly after Marjorie disappeared and is also a suspect in the 1984 disappearance of Tammy Lyn Belanger in that state.

Wonteye was never charged in connection with either child's case and no physical evidence connects him to the disappearances. He maintained his innocence and said he never even met Marjorie. Wonteye was sentenced to 75 years for burglary and indecent exposure in Florida in 1992; at the trial, prison inmates testified that he admitted killing Marjorie and Tammy. He was released from prison in 2012 and died eight months later.

In 2010, authorities named Delbert Mosher was another possible suspect in Marjorie's disappearance. He lived in the area at the time Marjorie disappeared, and was arrested three times for child molestation. He died in a Tennessee prison over twenty years after Marjorie went missing.

William Ferris lived near the home of one of Marjorie's friends at the time of her disappearance. The friend's home was just on the other side of the block from her route to the store, and Marjorie could have reached the house by cutting through yards. The friend wasn't at home that day, but if Marjorie had tried to visit her she would have passed Ferris's house. He was later arrested for child molestation in Virginia.

When questioned about Marjorie's disappearance, Ferris initially denied knowing her. In a later police interview he admitted he did know her, because his wife sometimes babysat for Marjorie's friend. According to Ferris's wife, one day when the two girls were playing together, Ferris said one of them was going to disappear someday. After Marjorie went missing, he said she would never be found. There is no evidence to implicate him in her case, however.

Marjorie's mother moved away after her daughter disappeared, but later moved back into the same house where she lived with Marjorie in 1984. She still lives there and still hopes for answers in her daughter's case. Foul play is suspected in Marjorie's disappearance. Her case remains unsolved.

Detective still searching for answers 37 years after Greenacres girl disappeared
It's been 37 years since 8-year-old Christy Luna disappeared, but Detective William Springer has not given up.

"I know 2020 was a bad year," Springer said. "People didn't get to go out, people's lives changed. And I just want you to think about something. In 2020, when your life changed because of COVID, it was very upsetting. Jennie Johnson's (Luna's mother) life changed on May 27, 1984 and she has never been able to get back to a normal life."

"I'm back here in 2021 and ready to work. I want to get out there and follow up leads," Springer said. "I would appreciate any leads you can give us so that we can bring Christy home."

Story by Angie DiMichele, South Florida Sun-Sentinel • 6h ago

Her face was pictured on the side of milk cartons. A billboard years later. And as the decades have passed, her pictures and story have been spread on social media and in a documentary, all with the hopes that whoever knows what happened to Marjorie “Christy” Luna on May 27, 1984, would come forward.

A breakthrough still hasn’t come. Saturday marks 39 years since Christy went missing. She was 8 years old when she left her Greenacres home in the 200 block of Broward Avenue and walked barefoot to a corner store within eyesight of her street to buy cat food and never came back.

Possible suspects were identified but never charged. The most credible tip received by Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office detectives came in 2019. It led them to dig up a field near Christy’s home, but all that was uncovered were animal bones. No sign of Christy.

The Sheriff’s Office produced a 20-minute documentary a few years ago, featuring Det. Bill Springer, who was one of the original detectives on the case. In a new video shared Friday on Facebook, Springer said he believes someone knows what happened to Christy.

“They don’t want to talk about it because it’s a close family relative or it’s somebody that they really know, and they don’t want to destroy a family,” Springer said. “But you have to do the right thing because this person took Christy and destroyed a family.”

It is unknown whether the Sheriff’s Office has investigated any other credible tips since the dig with Florida Gulf Coast University anthropologists in August 2019. The Sheriff’s Office did not, and still has not, released details about what the tip was or who it came from.

PBSO still searching for missing girl 40 years later
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO) released a Facebook post stating that Monday marks 40 years since Christy Luna went missing, and they are still searching.

Detectives have been investigating this case for 40 years, involving the FBI and other departments.

PBSO is turning to the public for help, stating that it believes someone knows something about this case.

They have created a documentary hoping that someone will come forward with information to help close the case and provide answers to her family.

New clue in 41-year-old disappearance of Christy Luna points to Michigan sex offender

Eight-year-old Christy Luna disappeared on May 27, 1984 — last seen walking home from a Greenacres corner store after buying cat food on a Sunday afternoon. Despite massive searches, numerous suspects, and a relentless investigation, Christy was never seen again.

Her mother, Jennie Johnson, has never stopped looking for answers.

“In the back of my mind, I hope a couple took her,” Johnson said in an earlier interview. “That’s how I cope. In the back of my mind, I try not to think the worst. Because it's too hard to deal with.”

Now, true crime podcast "The Deck" is bringing fresh attention to the case. Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Det. Bill Springer — who has worked Christy’s case for more than 20 years — says thathe t renewed spotlight is making a difference.

“I won’t call it a tip, but I did get some information,” Springer said. “So it was information that was helpful, but not in finding Christy. But it’s giving me some more background.”

Springer said that last year, he was contacted by a parole officer in Michigan who discovered Christy’s photo on the phone of a convicted sex offender.

“He’s a child molester, had child porn, and his parole officer let us know about it,” Springer said. “We interviewed him, and I can’t put him in Palm Beach County. But I will give you his name, and if anybody can remember him ever being here — or his father — I would like to talk to them.”

The man’s name is Jerry Alex Grof, though Springer says his real name is Jerry Bailey.

“I said, Why do you have her picture?” Springer recalled. “He said, 'Because I was going through the dark web. I saw her picture, I liked it.'"

"That’s why I say if somebody remembers the Bailey family being in Greenacres back in the day, I would like to talk to them," said Springer.

Two of Christy’s childhood friends have made finding her their mission — starting a Facebook page and collecting binders of documents.

One of them, Jennifer, who doesn't want her last name used, shared a traumatic story she’s never told publicly until 2007 when she was an adult. She says that's when she heard an emotional appeal on TV from Christy's mom for information, and it all came flooding back.

She says a harrowing attack against her happened the same day Christy disappeared and that Christy was there during the attack.

Jennifer told WPBF 25 News Investigative Reporter Terri Parker that a man lured her into their neighborhood park bathroom by saying someone had left change inside, and she could come get it.

“I just started scooting around and collecting the change and I heard a sound behind me and it startled me,” Jennifer said. “He was standing there, his pants down. He threw me to the floor and jumped on top of me, pulling off my underwear.”

Jennifer says Christy burst in during the attack.

“I heard Christy come in—‘What are you doing to my friend? What are you doing to my friend?’ She was just screaming, screaming that.”

Jennifer says she passed out. When she came to, both the man — and Christy — were gone.

When asked if she believes that man took Christy, Jennifer said, pointing to a police sketch she made later: “What I can tell you is, this was the man that was on top of me in the bathroom. This was the man.”

She identified him as Charles Rambo, who lived nearby and was in 1985 convicted of molesting a 6-year-old girl in the neighborhood.

Springer says Charles Rambo and his brother Willis are still suspects, along with at least two other men, but there is no physical evidence to make an arrest.

“We have some good people of interest,” Springer said, “but without a body and without somebody coming forward with some direct knowledge, it’s just a hard case.”

In 2019, acting on a tip, Springer led a five-day search of a septic tank at a home across from the store where Christy was last seen. Nothing was found.

“It’s not fair,” said Christy’s childhood friend Brenda Periche. “We’ve been at this for over 10 years.”

Now the stakes are even higher. Christy’s mother is gravely ill with leukemia.

“There’s a special place in hell for the guy who did it,” Springer said. “And there’s another place in hell for the person who knows about it and doesn’t come forward.”

Detectives are asking anyone who may remember Jerry Bailey (aka Jerry Grof), his father, Leroy Allen Bailey or the Bailey family living or visiting the Greenacres area in the early 1980s to contact the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers.

What happened to Christy Luna? Inside the 41-year mystery that haunts Palm Beach County
It’s a mystery that has haunted Palm Beach County for nearly 41 years.

Marjorie “Christy” Luna was just 8 years old when she vanished from her quiet Greenacres neighborhood on Memorial Day weekend in 1984.

She walked barefoot to the corner store to buy cat food — a short, familiar trip just 400 feet from her front door — and was never seen again. Her body has never been found. Her case remains unsolved.

Now, as her mother battles cancer, she’s hoping to live long enough to learn the truth.

Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Detective William Springer has worked Christy’s case since 1984. Now retired, he continues investigating it part-time.

“To me, everyone is still a suspect,” Springer said. “Victor Wonyetye, the Rambo brothers, Bill Ferris — they’re all still on the list.”

Victor Wonyetye, a convicted sex offender, was reportedly seen at the store the day Christy disappeared. Like William “Bill” Ferris, he was investigated, but never charged.

In 2019, Springer and a forensic team even excavated a site near Christy’s home, following a tip. They found nothing.

“We dug up that septic tank. We didn’t miss anything,” he said. “But we found nothing.”

“There’s a special place in hell for the guy who did it,” Springer added. “And another place in hell for the person who knows and doesn’t come forward.”

The Rambo brothers, Willis and Charles, lived on the same street as Christy. They were charged with molesting her friend, who was six years old at the time, just after her disappearance.

There is one more name now on Springer’s radar: Jerry Grof, whose real name is Jerry Bailey. He’s currently on parole in Michigan for a child pornography conviction.

Bailey’s parole officer reported he had a photo of Christy Luna saved on his phone. It wasn’t just any photo — it was a missing child flyer from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Springer flew to Michigan last year to interview Bailey. When he confronted him, Bailey claimed he downloaded it from the dark web “because he liked it.”

“But we can’t place him in Palm Beach County,” Springer said. “The closest we can get is Gainesville.”

Springer is now asking the public: “If you recognize Jerry Bailey or his father, Leroy Allen Bailey — if you think you ever saw them in Palm Beach County — please come forward.”

Now, with Jennie Johnson battling leukemia, the search for Christy carries new urgency. Brenda and Jennifer say they can see the toll it’s taking.

“She needs that closure. She needs it desperately,” Brenda said through tears. “It’s not just her trauma — it’s Allison’s too,” referring to Christy’s sister.

“You get up every day and have your coffee and breathe free air,” Brenda said. “And she’s here sick, lost her baby, and doesn’t know where her baby is.”

Jennifer, still hopeful, said, “Until there are remains that have been identified as Christy, I want to believe she’s still out there.”

If you lived in Palm Beach County in the 1980s — or know someone who did — investigators are asking you to think back.

“It’s okay if you haven’t said anything for 41 years,” Jennifer said. “Please just come forward and share what you remember.”

Detectives are urging anyone with information—no matter how small—to come forward. They believe one tip could finally bring justice and peace to Christy’s family.
