Kate McCann felt "distressed" after an alleged stalker who falsely claims to be Madeleine McCann turned up at her home, a court heard.

Giving evidence against 24-year-old Julia Wandelt, Mrs McCann said her first contact with the Polish woman happened "about three years ago".
Wandelt insisted that she was Madeleine, who went missing in Portugal in 2007, while stalking the missing girl's parents by sending emails, calling them and turning up at their address, prosecutors allege.

Speaking from behind a blue curtain screening her from the dock at Leicester Crown Court, Mrs McCann spoke about the defendants visiting her home address in Leicestershire on 7 December last year.
Mrs McCann told the court that Wandelt had been "pleading" with her, asking why she wouldn't agree to do a DNA test.
Spragg, who accompanied Wandelt, was "slightly more aggressive", asking her whether she didn't want to find her daughter, Mrs McCann added.
"I told them to leave. I told them I was distressed," she told the court.
Asked how the incident had made her feel, Mrs McCann added: "I felt quite distressed to be honest. I think I had been on edge anyway because of the recent communications from her."

After Mrs McCann had given her first round of evidence, Wandelt was led away from the dock after sobbing loudly and shouting: "Why are you doing this to me?".

Mrs McCann told the jury that Wandelt had been "incessant" with her messages, which left her with a "little niggle" about doing a DNA test.
She said part of her brain was "saying 'what if'" because of Wandelt's frequent messages, but added: "Having seen a photo of her, she's Polish … it doesn't make sense."
"I can't say what Madeleine looks like now, but if I saw a photo of her, I would recognise her," she said.
But she added that the "persistance" of Wandelt's behaviour started to "get to" her, making her "almost [want] a DNA test to put it to bed"

Asked about the impact on her between June 2022, when Wandelt first made contact, and February this year, when the 24-year-old was arrested, Mrs McCann said: "I feel like it has escalated, the level of stress and anxiety it's caused me has increased over that time."
She added that she has felt "more relaxed" since Wandelt's arrest.
Gerry McCann told the court he answered the phone to Julia Wandelt on one of the many occasions that she tried to call Kate. He said he told Wandelt: "You're not Madeleine."
He said: "I made it very clear these were unwanted calls. To be honest, it was a bit of a blur."

And why I don't blame the McCann's for their distress. She's obviously not going to stop until she is made to where she physically can't.

I do believe they should have been charged with neglect. What they did was no different than when any parent leaves the house with the very young kids unattended. They couldn't even see their unit from where they were and they turned down the babysitting service. There is no excuse for that. I don't believe, other than that, that they had anything to do with her disappearance or any kind of cover up.

A 22-year-old Polish woman claims to have proof that she is Madeleine McCann, the British child who vanished in Portugal 16 years ago while on vacation with her family.

The young woman, Julia Wendel, whose claim went viral on social media, said last week that a German pedophile who was a primary suspect in the disappearance had assaulted her as a child. She further asserted that the McCann family approached her to perform a DNA test to determine whether they were a match.

Wendel is 21, but believes her age could be wrong. Maddie was born in May 2003, meaning that she would now be 19. She said she resembles Madeleine’s parents, Gary and Kate, and Wendel claims she has the same eye deformity as the missing child.

According to recent news reports, a source close to the McCann family has said that "the family isn't taking any risks and is willing to check any references. It's important that they look at all the factors, and the girl does indeed look similar. No one is debating that. If what she says is true, there is a chance that it's her."

Wendel claims that she was unaware of the McCann disappearance until she began enquiring about her parents' stories regarding her childhood, which she had no memories of. Wendel stated: “The memories are very blurry, and when I talked about them with my parents, things didn't match up. They always tried to change the subject.”

A Polish woman who claims that she could be Madeleine McCann is likely not the missing British girl, according to a Swiss artificial intelligence company that matches photographed faces.

The Polish woman, Julia Faustyna, who also goes by Julia Wendlet, has been claiming on Instagram and TikTok that she may be the British girl, who went missing as a toddler from a family vacation in Portugal in 2007, due to similarities in their appearance and age. She has amassed tens of thousands of followers as a result.

Christian Fehrlin of AI company Ava-X told Swiss news outlet Blick that it is "practically impossible" for Faustyna to be McCann based on the company's analysis of their faces.

The McCanns could be Polish origin too. People from the UK come from all over. I have Dutch, French and Irish ancestry.

Why didn't LE test her to rule her out. that is the better question and then they would have known. They are the ones that are supposed to be investigating this.

Two different things. Not so much a better question as a different one--it doesn't negate the fact the women were trespassing, staking and harassing and should be charged for such.

"Why are you doing this to me" is now the common click bait/sensational headline when indeed the two women were the ones at fault.

Why is it when someone claims to be a long lost child, it seems like they always make it public, try to contact the parents directly, etc. Smh.

The McCanns and Polish LE seem satisfied she is NOT Madeline. A ways up in a link it said Polish LE knew her circumstances and knew it was not her or some such. I'm thinking maybe a certified birth certificate or some such.

People like this should have serious repercussions imo and they definitely aren't doing it for the right reasons.

The McCanns are damned if they do and damned if they don't. If they are out there in support of finding her some pick them apart every little thing and if they withdraw they are accussed of not caring or doing anything to help.

I'm not a fan of them but neither do I detest them, kind of in the middle.

I think they'd do a lot of things different in hindsight and are protective of the remaining children. It said not until the women or one of them contacted or tried to contact Amelie [sp?] did Kate decide enough is enough. I'm sure they feel if they make a big to do even if being constantly harassed, it will just give some in the public more fodder and bring criticism.

The other children have grown up under the cloud of this and attention on it while the parents probably try to give them a normal life. I have NO understanding of someone coming to one's home like that nor sympathy for the women. It would scare me too and even more so with the circumstances and the endless calls are not a light thing either.

The McCann's have primarily Irish and Scottish roots. Why waste more resources on a direct comparison if her ancestry isn't even similar and she can be ruled out in other ways? If the authorities had any reason to believe she was Maddie, they could run the test without the consent of the McCann's, as they have their DNA on file. And even if they didn't, a court order would solve that.
This woman has some serious mental health issues.
