Amish teen goes missing after church event in Lancaster County: Police
Police in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania are searching for an Amish teen who did not return home from a church event.

"We don't know specifically that there was any foul play involved at this point in time," East Lampeter Township Police Lt. Matthew Hess said.

Police said the family of 18-year-old Linda Stoltzfoos reported her missing Monday, after she didn't return to her family's home in the rural village of Bird-in-Hand following the church event the day before.

"There was no indications that she intentionally was leaving, meaning no one is giving us any of that information," Hess said.

On Monday afternoon, dozens of agencies teamed up blocking off roads, giving Amish residents rides to and from staging areas. Community members signed up at the local fire department to search fields, barns and buildings.

Police are asking travelers in area where Amish woman disappeared in Lancaster County for help in their search

As they continue to search for an 18-year-old Amish woman who went missing on June 21, police in Lancaster County are seeking help from any bikers, drivers, or walkers who may have been in the area at the time she disappeared.

"The idea or the point behind people contacting the police is to allow us to speak to them in case there were any sort of suspicious activities or things that they may have observed that they may not have initially thought were important," said Lt. Matthew Hess of the East Lampeter Township Police Department.

Police are asking anyone who may have been traveling on the following roads between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on June 21 to contact them at (717) 291-4676:
  • Mill Creek School Road
  • Stumptown Road
  • Gibbons Road

Search widens for Amish teen missing in Lancaster County

The search for a missing Amish teenager in Lancaster County is now entering its second week and it’s expanding as the FBI joins in.

“This has gone from a local to a multi-county (search) and even outside of Pennsylvania now,” said Lt. Matthew Hess of the East Lampeter Township Police Department.

At this point, police said that they do not believe Linda ran away.

“We’re are trying to get her information, what she looks like, her descriptors, out to surrounding counties as well," Hess said.

Officials said that Linda didn’t have access to electronics or social media, which complicates the investigation.

Police are asking anyone who may know anything to reach out.

“There are sometimes people who heard something or saw something that they thought was insignificant, but it could actually be helpful,” Hess said.

Boy I don't know on this one. I do know even 20 years ago the Amish had cell phones in our area. I remember being surprised and asking and they could only use them for business, like if the father was a woodworker for other people, that would be only for business calls. And any child, even Amish, can buy a cell phone easily at even a dollar store. It seems unlikely though but if not leaving with someone, in this case, what is likely?

The age of 18 again still strikes me. I suppose they know if any Amish men are missing even if it seems unrelated?

If not foul play, there has to almost be another person involved. She would have little chance imo of making it on her own and not being noticed.

I mean they do have contact with outsiders, without a doubt. In our area, one will encounter them at auctions, at annual big threshing bees/festivals and more. We have an Amish run pantry which is well known and with tons of customers who buy goods there.

I ran into a bunch of probably 12 to 13 year old girls in a Kwik Trip restroom a few years ago. It was quite interesting. I will save the story for some other time but let's just say it was eye opening for me--they were not being immediately supervised that much was clear and they were very typical teen girls...

I admire a lot of their ways but it is impossible to seal your children from the world as a whole... I still hope this is a willingly left situation and she is safe.

They ARE very typical teens. I've met many of them as they have bought a lot of my family's properties in the last 20 years or so. VERY typical. i have also seen many of the framers on construction sites and the men are very typical, too. They laugh and cut up a LOT, but the big difference is that they keep working while they have fun compared to the framers that worked for other builders.

Yep. These girls were going to open the emergency door, I could tell... Some where in the bathroom, some were just outside by that door. They were checking themselves out in the mirror and sharing a lipstick and likely more, I did not see it all. It was such an unusual site to me :) No parent around that I could tell. I may as well have been invisible that unconcerned they were when I walked in, used the stall, and came out and tried to find a place to wash my hands... I had seen the antics of a few in and out from the bathroom to near the emergency door and saw the actions when I came in and came out. I knew they were just waiting to set the door and alarm off any second... Soooo obvious lol, like any young teen who thinks they are not obvious to adults... I had to laugh as I got into my car. It was just something unlike I had ever seen. A group of girls that age together either at a "store" either without a parent or the parent was outside or they were free or pulled something to get a little freedom.... :D

We were cracking up watching the teens taking the buggy to go fishing down at the lake. They had their Igloo cooler strapped on the back and had their Ray-Bans on and were acting pretty much like typical teens out and about with cutting up and such. The only thing different was their transportation.

I can picture that. Puts a smile on my face.

It did us, too. As much as when the younger men were repairing my parent's roof on their barn. They were eager to use the power tools but put them down and picked the manual tools back up when the elders came by. :giggling:
LOL, I have a feeling that's what the girls would have done with the makeup they seemed to have in the bathroom if the wrong person had come in...

UPDATE: Per this video:
"It's been reported that Linda was last seen walking along Stumptown Road after a church event. But police say that's not correct. They say she was last seen AT the church event which was located on Stumptown Road between Beachdale and Gibbons Road.

Hmm. So the last sure sighting was at the church event so apparently no one at it saw her leave nor noticed her leave at all. If anyone did, or said they did, they are not taking it as proof positive. Unless this was a huge highly attended event, not sure I can picture that, unless she excused herself to use the bathroom and then slipped out or something. Otherwise, one would lean towards someone at the event.

I wonder how many confirmed she was AT the event or if they had any idea for how long.

Like many cases, just not enough info. They likely have that info but we don't of course.

FBI releases composite picture of missing Amish girl

Authorities released a composite photo Thursday of 18-year-old Linda Stoltzfoos who has been missing since June 21.

The picture is how she may look in street clothes and with her hair down, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The bureau is asking anyone who has information to contact the East Lampeter Township Police at 717-291-4646. Tipsters can also use the FBI’s online tip site at tips.fbi.gov.

Nothing real new in here EXCEPT every article seems to have juat a bit different twist on when and where last seen. She was last seen AT a farm and walking home from church service. I thought the other day it was made clear she was last seen at the church service?? Where does a farm come into play or was that where the church service was? And since when was she walking home?? Oh, AND we have a time in this one.

Stoltzfoos was last seen at 12:30 p.m. June 21 at a farm on Stumptown Road between the intersection of Beechdale Road and Gibbons Road in Bird-in-Hand.

She vanished while walking home from a church service.

I don't know sometimes whether to dislike the inaccurate media or if it is due to something else. Smh.

Search for missing Amish woman enters its third week, investigation continues

Investigation into the disappearance of an 18-year-old Amish woman has entered its third week.

East Lampeter Township police said Monday they have no updates on the search for Linda Stoltzfoos, but the investigation continues. Police are not coordinating any search efforts today, they said, and they don't know if any unofficial searches are happening.

Nothing has been ruled out, but there is no evidence of foul play, East Lampeter Township police public information officer Matthew Hess said.

If Stoltzfoos left of her own accord, he said police want her to know she is not in trouble and to contact police.

I'm stumped on this one. I HOPE she just decided to take a break from her family and/or lifestyle, but I'm worried about self harm. For some reason, I'm not sensing abduction- unless she left with someone she'd met and thought she could trust who isn't at all trustworthy. I worry that she's naive- which is a stereotype, I know. I wish I had a theory to toss out.

I hope to no end this young woman is alive and not a victim of foul play.

If for any reason she left willingly, though, she NEEDS to let her family and the public know she is okay. Just like the other 18 year old a month ago or so. I am sorry but if they feel adult enough to make their own decisions and go off on their own, they need to be adult enough to not put family through this terror and uncertainty about her safety and whether she is alive or dead. It is quite clear it can be done without anyone ever having a clue to her whereabouts if she does not want to return, she is of age and no one can make her.

The only exceptions I could possibly see is if she was a victim of abuse, physical or sexual, even then you can let LE know you are SAFE.

I PRAY this is what occurred here and she is alive and well. There is also NO way I see her having managed this on her own. Do we know if she even has ID like to get a job? Transportation? There has to be someone else involved. Also, if she has friends in the community who know or were sworn to secrecy, they also need to step up.

I feel horrible saying this if she is indeed a victim of foul play but on the chance it was voluntary, she needs to let someone know. I have little doubt the Amish community have searched the countryside thoroughly.

The odds seem just as likely or more so that this was a voluntary disappearance. And I hope and pray that it was AND that she did not naively trust the wrong person.

Jmo.

East Lampeter Township Police arrested Justo Smoker Friday night and charged him with felony kidnapping and misdemeanor false imprisonment.

The Lancaster County District Attorney's Office says Smoker became a person of interest in the kidnapping after witnesses reported to police that an Amish woman was seen in the passenger seat of a vehicle that matched the description of Smoker's red Kia Rio sedan.

Investigators say Smoker's car was seen on June 23 parked in a rural area in Ronks, where they believed Stoltzfoos might have been taken after being kidnapped. They say they found clothing that may belong to Stoltzfoos buried in a wooded area.

Justo Smoker was charged with kidnapping to inflict injury/terror, a felony, and false imprisonment, a misdemeanor, according to the docket sheet filed in his case. Smoker was arrested Friday, July 10, 2020 in the disappearance of 18-year-old Linda Stoltzfoos, after police found her clothes buried in a rural area where witnesses said they saw Smoker’s car. The Amish teen remains missing. Police arrested him at his place of employment. His charges were filed Saturday, July 11, 2020 before Magisterial District Judge B. Denise Commins in Upper Leacock Township, Pennsylvania. The charges were filed by East Lampeter Township police Detective Christopher Jones.

Smoker, of Paradise, Pennsylvania, was arraigned Saturday morning before on-call Magisterial District Judge Joshua R. Keller, who denied bail in the case. Keller denied bail due to the nature of the case and the ongoing investigation into Stoltzfoos’ disappearance, Smoker’s docket sheet says.

“Bail Action Reason: Due to the nature of the charges and ongoing investigation into the status of the victim,” the docket sheet said.

Smoker’s charges were filed by the East Lampeter Township Police Department following an investigation assisted by the FBI, Pennsylvania State Police and the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office.

Wow. This is a clear reminder that we were not aware of nor were we really told any of the facts. She never made the church gathering, the one article says it was late at night and she never came home, etc. We saw articles that said the last she was seen was at the church gathering then one said she was walking home, then another saying she never was seen leaving the gathering to know or seen walking home and was last seen at the gathering, now it says she was never at the gathering... Nothing wrong with that, protect the investigation first. Clearly almost nothing we were told or read was fact.

I am glad they knew more and were onto someone, however, there are sure questions that remain. The hope for her does seem slim with finding her clothes, etc. I am actually surprised they have it on surveillance. How did he get her in and keep her in the passenger seat? Gun? That would be my guess until we hear more...

Damn!
