He was being babysat by the mother's boyfriend and was found 176 yards from the home.

From the Newsnation link upthread -

“This is not the outcome we expected,” Sheriff Greg Seabolt said during a press conference on Tuesday. “We discovered Liam King’s body at 10:15 this morning in a pond located approximately a tenth of a mile from where he was staying.”
The sheriff said the body would be sent to the medical examiner to determine the cause of death.
Seabolt thanked the community for the outpouring of support from the citizens of southern Randolph County and beyond, including volunteers who came from as far as New Hanover County. A Brunswick County rescue official found Liam on Tuesday morning in a pond on someone’s property.
“Our goal was to find him alive and we did not achieve that goal,” Seabolt said.
“Our mission was to do a detailed search,” Chief of Brunswick Search and Rescue Doug Dawson said. “I had eight people from my team. I had two law enforcement on our team … We just started our search when we heard a woman yelling and ran off to see what it was … Unfortunately, that’s where she led us to the pond.
According to the sheriff’s office, Liam was being babysat by his mother’s boyfriend when the child disappeared.
The investigation is ongoing, and they are not ruling anything out regarding Liam’s cause of death.
The sheriff’s office has a voluntary program for special needs individuals that provides emergency officials with important information that could assist them in emergency situations.
