Gastonia woman disappears under strange circumstances

An 18-month-old little girl cries for her mother as Gastonia Police seek answers in a missing persons case detectives concede makes them worried.

Laporscha "Porscha" Chantal Baldwin, 30, failed to show up for work delivering packages for Amazon Sunday afternoon after attending morning church services with her family in Gastonia.

Police found Baldwin's Toyota Corolla abandoned Monday on I-85 South between Belmont and Sam Wilson Road in Mecklenburg County with no trace of the young mother.

Baldwin would never leave her "miracle baby" without telling someone where she was going, says her mother Priscilla Baldwin.

Phone records indicate Baldwin had contact with her former boyfriend, 35-year-old Charles Combs of Charlotte on Sunday, Goodale said.

A Mecklenburg County court found Combs guilty of second-degree murder in the 2004 death of his live-in girlfriend, according to court records. Combs, who was 18 at the time, was released from prison in November 2015.

Baldwin and Combs at one time lived together in Charlotte, but broke up within the last few weeks, said her mother. Police do not know if Combs and Baldwin had issues in their relationship, but have reached out to talk to him without success, Goodale said.

Family pleads for answers, detectives searching for answers in case of missing North Carolina woman

A Gastonia family is pleading for answers in the disappearance of a missing mother. 30-year-old LaPorscha Baldwin, the mom of a little girl, was last seen on Sunday, and police are concerned about her safety.

Baldwin’s daughter, LaPorscha Baldwin, has a baby of her own, a one-and-a-half-year-old little girl, and her mom says she would never leave her.

“She had two miscarriages, so her daughter’s like her ‘miracle child,’ so she would never, ever leave her, She’s her heart, she wouldn’t leave her,” said Priscilla Baldwin.

The family was together last Sunday at church.

“She put her daughter in my car, she kissed her, she played with her a little bit, she told her, ‘I love you I’ll see you in a little bit,’ she said, ‘I love you,’ I said, ‘I love you too,’ and I left and she left,” said Priscilla.

That’s the last time Priscilla saw her daughter.

LaPorscha was supposed to go to work at Amazon in Huntersville Sunday, but her mom says she didn’t show up.

On Monday night, Gastonia Police found Baldwin’s car abandoned on I-85 south between Sam Wilson Road and Belmont.

“It’s very overwhelming, I’m trying to keep it together, my faith in God is strong, but I’m still a mother. It’s hard, it’s hard,” said Priscilla, fighting back tears.

Detectives don’t have enough information to say a crime was committed, but they are concerned about Baldwin’s safety, and they want to talk with 35-year-old Charles Combs, Baldwin’s ex-boyfriend.

Investigators tell us Combs was previously convicted years ago of second-degree murder in a separate case in Mecklenburg County.

Priscilla is clinging to her faith that her daughter is safe.

A Gastonia woman was last known to be with her ex-boyfriend. Police say her phone has pinged in South Carolina's upstate

30-year-old Laporscha Chantal Baldwin has been missing since Sunday, Oct. 10, and the search for her may extend past the Charlotte area.

On Oct. 12, the Gastonia Police Department released early details about what they knew. Officers say she last spoke with her family around 2 p.m. on Oct. 10, and has not been heard from since. Baldwin's car was found abandoned along the southbound lanes of I-185 near Sam Wilson Road and Belmont, and police believe she was with her ex-boyfriend. He's been identified as 35-year-old Charles Combs of Charlotte, and so far, he hasn't been located.

WCNC Charlotte learned more new information on Friday, Oct. 15: when Baldwin's car was found, the tires were slashed, and possible blood was found on the steering wheel, dashboard, and cup holder. Investigators found women's clothing and duct tape inside as well.

More information about Combs has also come to light; in 2004, he was convicted of the second-degree murder of a previous girlfriend. A search warrant executed at his home by police on Friday again did not see him turn up.

The search warrant obtained by WCNC Charlotte also provides a more clear timeline of events: according to her mother, Baldwin reportedly left for work at Amazon on Oct. 10 and planned to meet up with Combs to get a few of her belongings from him. However, Amazon told her mother Baldwin didn't show up for work. Baldwin's car was found on Monday, Oct. 11.

The same day Baldwin was supposed to go to work, her cell phone pinged at a tower near Combs' apartment around the same time she last spoke with her family. Through Sunday evening, her cell phone pinged in the upstate of South Carolina, hitting towers in Greenville, Boiling Springs, and Taylors. Additionally, Combs' cell phone pinged during the same time frame along I-85 in Cherokee County, South Carolina.

While Combs is not being named a suspect at this time, police still want to talk to him. Anyone who knows of his whereabouts or where Baldwin could be is urged to call Gastonia officers at 911 or 704-866-6702. Callers can remain anonymous.

You’ve got to be kidding me! He’s done this before?

Family of woman murdered in 2004 by same man charged in Gastonia murder, helping domestic violence victims

It’s a decision that too many men and women face: how to leave out of an abusive relationship before it’s too late.

In 2004, Marsheida Dorsey-Carn was murdered by then-boyfriend Charles Combs. Combs, who was 18 years old at the time, served nearly 12 years behind bars for the murder.

Almost 17 years later, he’s now accused of murdering LaPorscha Baldwin.

“It was as if hearing this thing was happening all over again for me just to carry the pain of Marsheida,” said Dr. Purposed Carn.

Man arrested in Myrtle Beach extradited to North Carolina to face murder charge in ex-girlfriend’s killing

A North Carolina man arrested in Myrtle Beach in connection to the death of a Gastonia woman has been extradited to Charlotte and formally charged with murder, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office said on Tuesday.

Charles Combs, 35, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 30-year-old LaPorscha Baldwin. He was brought into the detention center by CMPD about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. He made his first court appearance about 1 p.m. and was denied bond.

Community celebrates life of LaPorscha Baldwin a year after her murder

Almost one year after her death, the community honored the life of 30-year-old LaPorscha Baldwin on Sunday.

They held a tribute for her at First Antioch Interdenominational Church as a way to celebrate her life, as opposed to mourning her loss.

“Even though she’s not here with us in the flesh, that she’s here with us in the spirit,” her brother, Clifton Baldwin, said.

She said Baldwin would’ve been 31 today.

“It was like a little relief,” Sadler said of Sunday’s event. “Being able to release all of that grief and things you’ve been holding on to for the last year. I was like, ‘you know what,’ today’s gotta be a better day.”

LaPorscha’s brother added many are now working to establish a nonprofit that will aid those in domestic violence situations.

“Spreading awareness about what true love is, things like that,” he said. “The biggest thing is not letting my sister’s legacy die.”

Charles Combs is in Mecklenburg County Jail right now. North Carolina judicial records show he has a court date coming up in November.

Less than ten years for second degree murder. It's a fact she would be alive had he not been let out after killing his former girlfriend.

I wonder if this ever weighs on the conscience of those who decide these sentences. Apparently not as it just keeps on...

Man pleads not guilty in Gastonia mom’s 2021 death; jury trial to be set

The case of a man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend will go to trial. On Thursday, May 8, Charles Combs appeared in court for a plea hearing.

Combs, through his lawyer, announced that he would be pleading not guilty to first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.

According to court documents, Combs served 12 years in prison in 2007 for second-degree murder after he killed his then-ex-girlfriend, Marsheida Dorsey. Following Baldwin’s death, Dorsey’s family reached out to the Gastonia mother’s family.

“Everybody just broke down, just crying remorseful for the family, and go through the same thing that my family had to endure at that time,” Dorsey’s stepmother, Dr. Purposed Carn, told Queen City News in 2021. “The memories are probably the worst.”

A jury trial date has not yet been set for Combs, with a temporary “placeholder” date of December 31, 2025, being listed on court documents.
