United Kingdom KYRAN DURNIN: Missing from Louth, Ireland - August 2024 - Age 8 - Possibly missing 2+ years

A missing eight-year-old is presumed dead after six weeks of searching that have revealed no trace of the youngster or his mum.

Kyran Durnin and his mother Dayla went missing overnight on August 28 from the family's home in County Louth, Ireland, after the 24-year-old left a note saying she "needed to get away for a few days". Police launched search efforts two days later, and despite "extensive enquiries" have not found any clues to their whereabouts well over a month later.

Garda have now issued an update saying Kyran is now missing presumed dead, having been unable to identify evidence suggesting he is currently alive. An Garda Siochana said in a statement today: “Despite extensive inquiries carried out by gardai to date, An Garda Siochana have been unable to either locate Kyran, identify any information on his current whereabouts or any evidence that he is currently alive.

“Following inquiries to date, investigating Gardai now believe that Kyran is missing presumed dead. A murder investigation has been commenced.”

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing, with the probe being led by a senior investigation officer based out of an incident room established at Drogheda Garda Station. Tusla, Ireland’s Child and Family Agency, is working closely with and fully co-operating with the Garda investigation.

When the missing person report was filed at the end of August it included a photo of Kyran when he was around six years old. And now the police believe Kyran, from Drogheda, in Co Louth, may have have been dead for more than two years, reports RTE.

It is also expected that Tusla, Ireland’s child and family agency, may also help in putting together what has happened to Kyran with police reportedly believing now that he may have died more than two years ago. As of now though police do not know how, if Kyran did die, or where his body in that case is located.

MEDIA: Missing 8 yr old Irish boy KYRAN DURNIN may have died TWO YEARS before anyone knew he was missing! How can that happen?

Hopefully it's a case that the grandmother was tired of being gaslighted by the daughter and had had enough.
Well it at least explains one initial question. Why would grandma say she saw him if he'd been missing such a long time? Because she saw this other boy who was being played off as Kyran.
I said early on and still believe that she had been covering for mom and was tired of it. Or, more likely, she was scared she was finally going to get caught up in it. With the social worker questioning things and making the initial report, she had to cover her own @$$.

But did she try to out that off with her own mother? They did for social services but hopefully her mom would know it wasn't him.

I'm sure she knew. Which is why she only made the report after the social worker did. She knew and was scared she was going to get caught. IMO.
I just think her ORIGINAL story was "I just saw him a few days ago!" but it was the other boy all along.

Missing Kyran Durnin’s mum ‘distraught’ at disappearance of son, 8, as she tells cops she fled Ireland over safety fears

MISSING Kyran Durnin’s mum told British cops she fled Ireland over fears for her safety.

Dayla Durnin is currently staying with friends in the Ipswich area of England.

She told British police she had no idea where her eight-year-old son Kyran is and could not give an explanation of when he disappeared and what might have happened to him.

A police source said: “She has been asked about the missing child and she has confirmed she does not know anything about it.

“She is distraught at the disappearance of her son and is staying with pals over here in England.”

Following a number of appeals, Gardai have been inundated with information from the public and are slowly following up every lead.

A senior officer involved in the investigation said it is going to take time and they have to be extremely careful what they say.

And a Garda source said their priority is to find out exactly what happened to Kyran.

Gardai are hopeful that local women with even a tiny bit of knowledge about the case might provide them with valuable new clues.

Gardai to charge at least 2 over Kyran Durnin murder once missing boy’s body found in ‘sooner than later’ breakthrough

AT least two people could be charged with little Kyran Durnin’s murder once the missing lad is found, Gardai believe.

Detectives are confident they will make a breakthrough in the case “sooner than later”.

The eight-year-old is officially missing three months this weekend and authorities are still trying to establish what happened to him after meeting a wall of silence.

A source told The Irish Sun: “There is more than one suspect here and we would hope to be arresting a number of people if and when a body is found.

“We expect to be dealing with murder, manslaughter, conspiracy to murder and withholding information. We are gathering the evidence and getting our ducks in a row at the moment. Our investigation is very live and active.

“It may seem slow, but the public should be reassured we are all over this case."

The Gardai say their investigation is “alive and ongoing”.

A Garda source said: “It is a very difficult and complicated case. We are trying to assemble as much evidence as possible before we make any arrests.

"There are a number of suspects involved here, but we are not going to move too soon in case we jeopardise a future prosecution down the road.

“A handful of people know exactly what happened to this little boy and there is no doubt he is dead and will not be coming back.

“But so far there is a code of silence, for whatever reason, and none of them are talking.

“We have received a huge amount of information from the public and are investigating every new lead.

"At the moment, we know a child is missing, presumed murdered, but we have no body.

“We would ask the public to be patient, but hope to have a breakthrough sooner rather than later.”

Woman arrested on suspicion of murder of Irish boy Kyran Durnin

A woman has been arrested in Ireland on suspicion of the murder of an eight-year-old boy who disappeared two years ago.

Gardai investigating the suspected murder of Kyran Durnin said on Tuesday the woman, whose name has not been made public, was being detained at a police station in the east of the country.

The arrest marks a major development in the three-month investigation, which was upgraded to a murder inquiry in October even though Kyran’s body had not been found. Detectives said at the time they strongly suspected he was dead.

Woman arrested on suspicion of the murder of Kyran Durnin

Gardai investigating the disappearance of eight-year-old schoolboy Kyran Durnin have arrested a woman on suspicion of murder.

In a statement, gardai said they arrested the woman on Tuesday.

The woman is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a garda station in the east of the country.

She can be questioned for up to 24 hours.

'She lied to me about Kyran or police have it wrong'

An audio recording has raised key questions in the investigation into the suspected murder of Kyran Durnin.

In the recording of a missing persons appeal, which is being broadcast for the first time by BBC Spotlight, Kyran's grandmother claimed he had last been in her home in August 2024.

However, when An Garda Síochána (Irish police) launched a murder investigation a few months later in October, detectives said Kyran had not been seen for two years, despite being known to child services.

The recording was made during an interview with a journalist in which Rhonda Tyson appealed to Kyran's mother, Dayla, who was also missing at the time, to make contact with her.

Dayla was found alive in Great Britain without Kyran.

Gardaí are now in possession of the tape as part of the investigation.

The recording contains an interview with the boy's grandmother and was made in the period between the missing person's appeal and the murder investigation.

Some of the information provided by Ms Tyson in the interview contradicts Garda statements surrounding the last time Kyran was seen.

Drogheda Life journalist Andrew Spearman said he had a "nodding acquaintanceship" with Ms Tyson prior to their interview.

When Gardaí launched a murder investigation weeks after the recording was made, Mr Spearman said he was "gobsmacked".

"I was shocked to the core. How could that be?

"I don't often stay awake at night thinking about things, but I did with this because, you know, either she was lying through her teeth to me, or the guards are wrong."

Spotlight approached Ms Tyson for a comment but she declined to respond.

So Grandma was most likely in on the coverup as many of us guessed.

Gardai release woman arrested as part of Kyran Durnin murder investigation

Gardaí have released without charge the woman arrested yesterday in connection with the disappearance and murder of Kyran Durnin (8 years).

Gardai say investigations are ongoing.

Kyran Durnin case: Suspect arrested on suspicion of boy’s murder released without charge

Gardaí believe the arrest of a woman on suspicion of the murder of Kyran Durnin, who would be aged 8 years if still alive, will “inform” the criminal investigation into his death, though it is still expected to take some time. The woman was released without charge on Wednesday afternoon.

Garda sources said it was never expected the arrest would result in criminal charges. Instead, it was carried out as detectives wanted to put evidence gathered to date to the woman as part of a long-range strategy in the case.

Confirming the suspect, the first person arrested in the case, had been released without charge, the Garda said it was still appealing to anyone with information about Kyran “no matter how insignificant it may seem” to contact the investigation team at Drogheda Garda station.

Gardaí detained the woman, who is in her 20s, on Tuesday after she returned from abroad. Though gardaí knew of the whereabouts of the woman for several months, and had spoken to her while she was abroad, they were powerless to arrest her, as she was not in the Republic.

They were also unable to extradite her because extradition can only be used as a legal mechanism for a suspect who is wanted to face criminal charges. This does not apply in the investigation into Kyran’s assumed murder as no charges have been approved by the DPP and no file on the case has been sent to the DPP’s office by the Garda.

Detectives are still trying to establish the basic facts of the case, including where and when Kyran died and if his death was definitely a homicide. They have not completely ruled out the possibility he died in some other way, perhaps accidentally, and that his death was concealed for some reason.

However, Garda sources said there was “really no doubt” Kyran was dead. Hopes, however slim, he may still be alive when the case became public knowledge in the summer had now completely faded. Gardaí suspect the boy died sometime in the second half of 2022. The woman arrested was questioned “on suspicion of murder” under Section 4 Criminal Justice Act 1984.

It was unclear why the arrested woman returned to Ireland but when gardaí became aware of her presence in the State they decided to detain her. It was the first arrest in the case, though Garda sources have cautioned the inquiry was still expected to take a long time “unless there’s some very unexpected development”.

Man arrested in connection with Kyran Durnin murder

A man has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of Kyran Durnin.

Gardaí investigating the disappearance and murder of Kyran arrested the man on suspicion of murder on Thursday.

He is being detained at a Garda station in the east of the Republic of Ireland.

Investigating gardaí have also been searching two houses in Drogheda in order to find any information on Kyran's whereabouts or what happened to him.

A search at one of the houses has finished, with gardaí saying they would not release further details.

The search at a second house, which is being supported by a cadaver dog, is expected to continue for some time.

Gardaí added that the house and gardens will involve an intrusive search, as well as technical and forensic examinations.

I wonder if they’re getting closer since they’re doing this extensive search.

Kyran Durnin: Suspect in murder of missing child has a history of violence

One of the suspects in the murder of missing child Kyran Durnin has a history of violence and anger management issues, the Irish Mirror can reveal.

It is understood extensive details of this suspect's behaviour and personality have been provided to the Gardai.

The suspect appeared in court over a decade ago for acts of violence but didn't get a prison sentence.

Meanwhile, a man in his thirties arrested on Thursday over Kyran’s murder refused to speak about the case after his release on Friday afternoon.

Friends of this man claim he is totally innocent and has nothing to do with it. When approached by the Irish Mirror, the man ran through the streets of Drogheda with a coat over his head to hide his face.

Both he and a woman also arrested and released without charge this week are known to each other. Gardai are now looking at carrying out a third search at another location in Drogheda in the hope of locating the youngster’s body.

They are also not ruling out more arrests. Detectives believe a number of people are aware what happened to the child and suspect there has been an elaborate cover up.

Maybe update the heading in this case to a murder based on the last sentence i have bolded below.

Gardaí using a cadaver dog and earth-moving machinery are this morning set to resume a search at a house in Drogheda as part of the investigation into the suspected murder of Kyran Durnin, the Co Louth boy who went missing more than two years ago aged six.

The search of the house and garden began yesterday after gardaí arrested a man on suspicion of the murder of Kyran, who was reported missing in August, when he would have been eight years old.

Detectives believe he has been dead since 2022 and that he was murdered, with his remains concealed.

The man’s arrest came less than 24 hours after a woman who had been detained, also on suspicion of murder, was released without charge.

Kyran Durnin case: Man with history of violence now suspect in murder investigationThe woman, who was the first person arrested as part of the murder investigation, was arrested on Tuesday after returning to the Republic from abroad. She is believed to have engaged with detectives while being interviewed rather than availing of her right to make no comment and denied having any knowledge of what happened to Kyran. She was released on Wednesday evening.

The male suspect, who is known to the woman, was arrested yesterday morning in the Drogheda area. Gardaí believe both suspects had contact with Kyran in the period before he was last seen in 2022.

The man can be interviewed for up to 24 hours without charge. When breaks in interviews for rest periods are factored in, he must be released or charged by this evening.

Gardaí said two houses in Drogheda were searched yesterday, with one of the searches concluding quickly. The second property was subjected to a much more extensive search, which is due to continue today. Gardaí said the search of the house, and adjoining garden, would be “intrusive” and would take some time.

The Garda team used a telescopic loader to move a digger into place in the rear garden for excavation in the event the child’s remains were buried there or other evidence was concealed.

“The purpose of these searches is to discover any evidence which might provide us with information as to Kyran’s current whereabouts or what has happened to Kyran,” a Garda statement said.

In late August, Tusla flagged its concern for Kyran’s welfare with the Garda after it was unable to locate him, though he was not in the child and family agency’s care.

A family member reported Kyran and his mother missing the following day.

However, while it was suggested the mother and son had been seen at a house in Drogheda in late August, gardaí have found no evidence Kyran was alive in the period since the last confirmed sighting of him in May-June 2022 at national school in Dundalk.

While gardaí initially began a missing persons inquiry, the investigation into Kyran’s disappearance has since been upgraded to a murder case.
