United Kingdom KYRAN DURNIN: Missing from Louth, Ireland - August 2024 - Age 8 - Possibly missing 2+ years

A missing eight-year-old is presumed dead after six weeks of searching that have revealed no trace of the youngster or his mum.

Kyran Durnin and his mother Dayla went missing overnight on August 28 from the family's home in County Louth, Ireland, after the 24-year-old left a note saying she "needed to get away for a few days". Police launched search efforts two days later, and despite "extensive enquiries" have not found any clues to their whereabouts well over a month later.

Garda have now issued an update saying Kyran is now missing presumed dead, having been unable to identify evidence suggesting he is currently alive. An Garda Siochana said in a statement today: “Despite extensive inquiries carried out by gardai to date, An Garda Siochana have been unable to either locate Kyran, identify any information on his current whereabouts or any evidence that he is currently alive.

“Following inquiries to date, investigating Gardai now believe that Kyran is missing presumed dead. A murder investigation has been commenced.”

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing, with the probe being led by a senior investigation officer based out of an incident room established at Drogheda Garda Station. Tusla, Ireland’s Child and Family Agency, is working closely with and fully co-operating with the Garda investigation.

When the missing person report was filed at the end of August it included a photo of Kyran when he was around six years old. And now the police believe Kyran, from Drogheda, in Co Louth, may have have been dead for more than two years, reports RTE.

It is also expected that Tusla, Ireland’s child and family agency, may also help in putting together what has happened to Kyran with police reportedly believing now that he may have died more than two years ago. As of now though police do not know how, if Kyran did die, or where his body in that case is located.

Mother of Kyran Durnin ‘no longer missing’ as murder probe over 8-year-old gets underway

Gardaí have confirmed that the mother of an eight-year-old Co Louth boy, believed to be a murder victim, is no longer a missing person after she disappeared with her son over six weeks ago.

Young Kyran Durnin vanished along with his mother, Dayla Durnin, earlier this year, with the pair reported missing on August 30.

When the initial report was made by Kyran’s grandmother, it was claimed the child was last seen on August 28.

However, it is believed that the youngster had not been seen for some time before that date.

It has been reported that a note was left by Ms Durnin, saying she “needed to get away for a few days”.

On Wednesday, a Gardaí spokesperson said a murder investigation has been launched in relation to Kyran.

However, no body has been found, or arrests made in relation to the case.

“Despite extensive inquiries carried out by gardai to date, An Garda Siochana have been unable to either locate Kyran, identify any information on his current whereabouts or any evidence that he is currently alive,” the spokesperson said.

“Following inquiries to date, investigating Gardai now believe that Kyran is missing presumed dead. A murder investigation has been commenced.”

A garda spokesperson confirmed to the Irish News that Dayla Durnin is “no longer considered missing”.

Kyran Durnin mystery as cops 'explore possibility' boy died long before he was reported missing

Kyran Durnin may have died months before he was officially reported missing, insiders have claimed, as the mystery of the now presumed dead eight-year-old deepens.

Kyran and his mum Dayla, 24, went missing from their home in County Louth, Ireland, on August 28, Rhonda Byrne Tyson, the youngster's grandmother has claimed, with their disappearance reported to Gardai two days later. Police have been unable to find a trace of the two since then, and announced today that they had upgraded the official investigation to a murder probe, with Kyran presumed dead.

An Garda Síochána said in a statement released this morning that the organisation was no longer seeking information that could help trace the whereabouts of the mum and son duo, and instead seeking leads in connection with their disappearance. Now, insiders have claimed that Dayla has been found alive in the UK, and that it is suspected Kyran may have died months earlier than his disappearance was officially noted.

Anonymous sources speaking to the Irish Times have claimed that while Dayla has been found alive, Gardai have been unable to locate her missing son. They told the publication that one of the lines of enquiry currently being considered is that Kyran may have died "well before" he was reported missing.

The sources added that efforts may have been made to convince Irish authorities, including the Republic's child and family agency Tusla, that he was still alive. The insiders also claimed that sources believed the investigation was complex with "many strands", and that, while some individuals known to the eight-year-old have been co-operating with the investigations, others have not.

One said: “There are a lot of moving parts which will take time to work through." Suspicions that the boy are also said to have mounted over the last month, leaving detectives "all but certain" the child was killed, but a possible accidental death is also being considered. No arrests have been made, and police are yet to recover any remains in relation to the case.

What in the world is going on? The mum may be alive? But no one else in the family has seen him in two years. Is that right? How could no one see or speak to a child in two years and nobody asked any questions by now?

The grandmother is stating he was last seen Aug 28th in one of the articles and she came with her kids to the grandmother's house and her and Kyron were missing in the morning with the mom leaving a note stating she needed a few days away.

So is the grandmother in on it or did she just assume she had him with her? I'm confused!

Super confusing.

How did no-one notice 8-year-old Kyran Durnin may have died up to two years ago?

GARDAÍ ARE INVESTIGATING whether an eight-year-old child who was reported missing in August may actually have died up to two years ago – raising serious questions about how his disappearance was never spotted by authorities.

Kyran Durnin and his mother were initially reported missing from their home in Drogheda, Co Louth on 30 August.

After extensive inquiries gardaí have been unable to find him, identify any information on his current whereabouts, or find any evidence that he is alive.

A murder investigation has now been opened as gardaí involved in the case believe that the child has died.

Gardaí had been liaising with the child and family agency Tusla in recent weeks as concerns mounted for the safety of Kyran, sources told The Journal.

Tusla would not comment on what it described as a “sensitive” case, but gardaí are aware that the State’s child and family agency had “extensive” contact over Kyran.

Sources told The Journal that gardaí had had some interactions with Kyran’s family in the course of regular policing before he went missing, but none in regard to issues around Kyran and how he was being treated.

In a statement, Tusla would not give any information about the nature of the interactions that the agency and its social workers had with Kyran or what happened at any meetings that may have taken place.

“Tusla cannot comment on individual cases,” the agency said in a statement. “In particular, we are conscious that there is an ongoing Garda investigation into this sensitive case.”

“We will continue to work closely with Gardaí and other parties as required at this time.”

What about school?

It is not known what school Kyran was attending — or even if he was attending one at all.

Some children do not start primary school until they are six years old, meaning that if he died two years ago, he may never have been enrolled in a school.

Gardaí investigating Kyran Durnin's disappearance cannot confirm any sighting of him this year

Gardaí investigating the case of missing eight year old Kyran Durnin have upgraded his disappearance to a murder investigation.

RTÉ is now reporting that gardaí are following the line of inquiry that Kyran may have died up to two years before he was reported missing. “Specific information has been received that this child is dead and this, along with other enquiries, have led gardaí to upgrade it to a murder investigation.”

Missing eight year-old Irish boy may have died TWO YEARS ago, police fear - as questions are raised over how a child could 'disappear' for so long

Gardai believe an eight-year-old boy, who was reported missing in August, may have died up to two years ago, raising questions over how the case went undetected for so long.

In a statement yesterday morning, gardaí said they had upgraded a missing-persons case involving Kyran Durnin, from Drogheda, Co. Louth, to one of murder.

'Despite extensive enquiries carried out by gardaí to date, An Garda Síochána have been unable to either locate Kyran, identify any information on his current whereabouts or any evidence that he is currently alive. Following enquiries to date, investigating gardaí now believe that Kyran is missing, presumed dead,' the force said.

His mother, Dayla, who was reported missing with Kyran at the end of August, has been located in the UK safe and well.

Investigators hope people known to Kyran may have information that can shed more light on the case, which is among the most complex and sensitive they have ever dealt with.

Gardaí are investigating how Kyran's school, as well as representatives from the Child and Family Agency, Tusla, who interviewed the Durnin family, did not know the child was missing.

The Irish Daily Mail understands one line of inquiry will examine if attempts were made to convince authorities he was still alive. Gardaí had already been searching for any sign of life regarding Kyran before the missing-persons report had been filed, but found nothing.

Last week, gardaí received intelligence which caused them to upgrade Kyran's disappearance to a murder investigation, an unprecedented move in a case in which someone had officially been missing for only seven weeks. The source of this information is not being released for operational reasons.

At this stage, gardaí have not ruled out that Kyran died accidentally and efforts may have been made to hide his remains.

Members of the Durnin family are cooperating with gardaí, officers said. It is understood they will be asked if they have any photos or other evidence which can show Kyran was alive on certain dates.

The Mail has confirmed that Tusla had requested a meeting with the child after several notifications were made to it about potential safeguarding issues.

Questions are also being asked as to why concerns were not raised about a child who gardaí believe is dead up to two years.

'Narrowing down the exact last moment gardaí have evidence of Kyran being alive is central to this investigation,' one senior source said.

'This gives gardaí a timeframe they can work from. There are several other strands to this investigation which are being worked on as well. The Tusla aspect is very important as well. Gardaí need to have clarity about these meetings and who was there. Tusla is cooperating fully with the gardaí in respect of this.

'But there are several things gardaí are looking at right now.'

Other avenues will be to interview Kyran's extended family and look for patterns which can then be probed further. The investigation will include speaking to staff at schools Kyran attended, as well as neighbours about what they have seen over recent months. They will also be asked when they last saw Kyran.

Aontú leader and Drogheda native Peadar Tòibín told the Mail the incident was 'heartbreaking' and said it was 'incredible this has been allowed to happen'. He said: 'This is a horrendous situation. It is shocking that Kyran may have been killed two years ago. Most people will be aghast at how this could have happened. There are serious questions to be asked in relation to child protection services if this is the case.'

Local Labour TD Ged Nash has said anyone concealing information about Kyran should examine their conscience. 'I would appeal to anybody who can throw light on this situation or knows what happened to Kyran and where he might be to speak with An Garda Síochána,' he said.

I go both ways on that one. It sure seems like she did BUT did the mom have a story that the grandmother bought and/or the grandmother has her head buried in the sand with her daughter?
Could be. I'm really lost. I'm not sure why Tusla was once involved either. Is that part of the Irish government? I do wish we had someone here who knows more about the country and might be able to give us some insight.

Minister for Justice vows anyone responsible for failing to protect Kyran Durnin (8) will be held accountable

Any person or agency which failed to take adequate measure to protect Kyran Durnin- the eight-year-old child now believed to have been killed up to two years ago- will be held accountable, Minister for Justice Helen McEntee has promised.

The Minister was speaking after it emerged that there has been no confirmed sighting of Kyran since around the time he was removed from his primary school in 2022.

It is believed Kyran has not been seen around the time he was withdrawn from school in mid 2022. Officials at the time believed he was transferring to a school in Northern Ireland.

Gardaí are working on the theory that he was killed shortly after he was last seen.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Ms McEntee said she is “absolutely adamant that if there were failings here people need to be held accountable.”

“We have a young boy who has not been seen in two years. That’s not acceptable. That’s not to be tolerated by anyone. We need to know what happened here. Any agency or person who has not done their job needs to be held responsible.”

Tusla had some dealings with the child’s family in previous years but there was no indication he was a victim of abuse.

The agency is co-operating with gardaí and has handed over a large amount of documentation relating to the child.

Investigators believe at least two people have detailed information on the child’s death. One person known to the child has changed their story a number of times since he was officially reported missing in August, sources said.

Gardaí investigating crimes against children must obtain court orders to access Tusla files

GARDAÍ INVESTIGATING CRIMES like the murder of Kyran Durnin must obtain warrants to access Tusla files on children who are victims in investigations.

Kyran Durnin had contact with at least one Tusla social worker before he disappeared possibly up to two years ago.

Gardaí were alerted to the case in recent months when Tusla, following a meeting, assessed that they feared for the safety of the boy.

The Journal has learned that Tusla had been in contact with Kyran’s school, which he had not attended since a date in 2022.

Sources have also said that there were confirmed sightings of Kyran in 2022 but that gardaí need to talk to people who may have seen the boy since that date.

It is understood that, in recent years, a number of social workers had been dealing with Kyran’s case but were not aware of his whereabouts.

Sources involved in carrying out investigations have strongly criticised the need to obtain warrants from state agencies like Tusla as they probe this kind of crime.

One source said: “It is ridiculous that two statutory agencies can’t cooperate fully. This can be solved rapidly – child protection issues are supposed to supercede all decision making, and this can be delayed by going through the process of obtaining court orders to investigate Tusla”.

A source explained the process for obtaining files from Tusla involves garda investigators going to court to either get an order from a judge under the Child Care Act or to obtain a search warrant.

A source with knowledge of Tusla’s side of that process said that the organisation can only release documentation without a warrant if they receive consent from a parent or guardian of the person mentioned in the file. If there is no consent then Tusla’s officers will not hand over the documentation without a warrant or court order.

The source stressed that there was no effort by Tusla to stymie garda investigations and that they were simply complying with the Data Protection Act.

A spokesperson for Tusla stressed that the agency was working closely with gardaí on the Kyran Durnin case but confirmed that there is a need for legal orders by law in some circumstances.

I was wondering why they were saying he was murdered, and now we know. If they had detailed information, then where are his remains?????
