State police searching for missing boy​

Kentucky State Police is searching for a missing child in Breathitt County.

Kentucky State Police Public Affairs Officer Post 13 Trooper Matt Gayheart says KSP responded to a 911 call for a missing child in the Panbowl Branch Road area of Jackson Wednesday morning.

Gayheart says troopers and local search and rescue teams responded to the area and began searching for the missing child, Jayden Spicer, 10.

The preliminary investigation shows that Spicer left his home in the middle of the night and early morning hours.

Spicer was last seen around 9 pm on Tuesday at his home. He was last seen wearing a blue “Sonic the Hedgehog” pajama set.

Search for missing 10-year-old Eastern Kentucky boy enters second day​

The search for a missing 10-year-old boy in Breathitt County entered its second day Thursday morning, according to Breathitt County Emergency Management.

Jayden Spicer was last seen Tuesday evening at his home on Panbowl Branch Road in Jackson. Kentucky State Police said they think Spicer left the home overnight Tuesday or early Wednesday.

Spicer was reported missing to state police around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. State police described Spicer as white, about 5-foot-1, slim build, blond hair and blue eyes.

State police, local search and rescue teams and other agencies responded to the Panbowl Branch Road area to search for Spicer.

Emergency management officials said they used several resources, including an all-terrain vehicle, canine, drone, sonar and helicopter to look for Spicer. Officials covered more than 20 square miles by 3 a.m. Wednesday, emergency management said.

The search for Spicer resumed at daybreak Thursday. Emergency management said access to the Panbowl Branch Road area will be restricted to prevent congestion in the area.

'We are racing against the clock': Concern grows as search continues for missing 10-year-old boy​

Kentucky State Police and local rescue teams are racing against the clock to find 10-year-old Jayden Spicer, who disappeared from his home Tuesday night.

Search and rescue teams are using drones, ATVs, and sonar technology to locate the child, who went missing from his mother's home on Panbowl Branch Road Tuesday night in Jackson.

"Any time you are dealing with a missing individual, it is a tragedy. But when it's a 10-year-old child, that completely changes the dynamic of it," KSP Trooper Matt Gayheart said.

KSP, Breathitt County Emergency Management, and local rescue teams have been searching for Spicer since Wednesday morning. Authorities say the search will be expanded on Friday.

"In this situation, we want to keep hope alive, but we are racing against the clock," Trooper Gayheart said.

Officials emphasize that the mountainous terrain and several bodies of water in the area, including Panbowl Lake, make the search particularly challenging.

"The more time he spends outside in the elements, unfortunately, statistically speaking, the chances of finding him safely diminish," the trooper explained.

In a handwritten note shared with LEX 18, the Spicer family wrote, "We love Jayden and we want him safe at home."

The family is asking anyone with information about Jayden's whereabouts to report it to the Jackson Police Department.


Crews are combing a 20-mile radius around Spicer's home, with plans to expand the search area tomorrow.

"A life is very important, this one's no different, so we will make sure to exhaust every resource we can to make sure we find him safely and bring him back home," Gayheart said.

“So as of right now, this investigation does not meet qualifications for any type of alerts. It doesn’t meet for an Amber Alert or an Ian Alert at this time. Without documented mental disabilities, it wouldn’t qualify,” Trooper Gayheart said.

Trooper Gayheart said there are several missing person alerts that they are able to use when the situation qualifies.

“The Amber Alert is utilized for someone who’s been abducted or his life’s in imminent danger and the Ian Alert is more for somebody who has physical disabilities,” Gayheart said.

Troopers said they did not have any evidence to believe the boy was kidnapped, but they will continue to keep it as an option.

Panbowl Branch Road was monitored throughout the day on Thursday with crews allowing only authorized personnel access to the scene.

People that live on that road said they have been watching crews search tirelessly for Spicer.

Douglas Hudson and Rena Ritchie said they did not know the boy personally, but they saw him and his family around.

They say a family member told them when Spicer went to bed Tuesday night, everything was fine... but when they woke up Wednesday morning, he was gone.

All I'll say for now is, any time a kid "was fine when they went to bed and gone when they woke up"...it has maybe only been the truth once or twice out of the dozens and dozens of times I've heard it.
I hope he really is just lost in the woods and they'll find him soon.

Despite intensive search efforts led by the Kentucky State Police (KSP), local law enforcement, and community volunteers, there have been no confirmed sightings of the missing child as of Thursday evening.

Jayden’s mother, Felicia Spicer—also known as Felicia Gross—has a previous charge related to child endangerment.

Although she initially provided a handwritten statement to authorities expressing heartbreak and pleading for help, she has since requested privacy and asked that her identity not be publicly shared.

However, records confirm her prior involvement in a child endangerment case, which is now drawing additional public scrutiny amid the ongoing search.

His two aunts are questioning some of the information that’s been given about what took place.

“There’s some stuff that just doesn’t add up in this case,” said Chyy Salyers.

Police say they were told that Jayden went to bed Tuesday night but was missing on Wednesday morning.

“As two aunts and mothers, we question a lot of the information ourselves,” says Salyers, who, along with Aunt Samantha Bunty, says there’s a lot that doesn’t add up.

Kentucky State Police say numerous search crews have combed the woods and hilly areas, even using sonar underwater. There have been no solid leads, but they say they are leaving no stone unturned and looking into every possibility.

“He’s a good boy. He is very sweet, loving. He is very hyperactive. He likes to be on the go 24/7,” said Bunty.

But they say he would never venture out in the dark and try to climb the rugged terrain that surrounds his home.

“He does not like insects at all. Or the dark. Up in the hills, any child can go anywhere, but it seems so unreal he would go up there,” said Bunty.

They say Jayden can be hyperactive and that can be difficult to deal with, but they say this has been almost too much to handle.

“Tore up, shocked. Heartbroken, confused. Don’t know if we are coming or going. Don’t know where to start,” said Salyers.
