‘No detail is too small’: Search expands for missing Aiken girl

A massive search involving local, state and federal law enforcement agencies continued Wednesday as authorities worked tirelessly to find 4-year-old Javeayah Harris, a little girl described by those who know her as smart, talkative and full of life.

Investigators say Javeayah disappeared from her family’s home near Hillsboro Street and Ridgecrest Road in Aiken around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday.

As the hours passed, the search only grew larger.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office has been joined by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), the FBI and numerous other local and regional law enforcement agencies in an extensive effort to bring the child home safely. Search teams have continued following leads while combing neighborhoods, wooded areas and other locations where a small child could be hiding.

Authorities are urging residents throughout the area to carefully search their own property, including sheds, playhouses, vehicles, crawl spaces, wooded areas and anywhere a curious young child might hide.

Sheriff’s officials said they remain grateful for the cooperation of Javeayah’s family and the support shown by the community since she vanished.

“We are committed to bringing Javeayah home safe and will continue to follow up on all leads,” the sheriff’s office said. “No detail is too small.”

Authorities said multiple agencies have been involved in the search for Javeayah, with police setting up road blockades in the area and launching drones where she was last seen.

Deputies are asking the community to keep an eye out for the girl, but said if they need any further assistance from volunteer groups, they will let residents know.

First responders are conducting door-to-door checks along with searching wooded areas.

Search intensifies for 4-year-old South Carolina girl not seen in days
Law enforcement agencies across South Carolina, along with federal partners, are continuing an intensive search for 4-year-old Javeayah Harris, who was reported missing Tuesday from her family home in Aiken County, authorities said Thursday.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office said investigators are using “every resource available” to find the child, with search teams working on the ground and by air. Officials said helicopters and drones have been deployed, neighborhoods have been canvassed, interviews are being conducted and available video footage is being collected.

So far, trained emergency management personnel and law enforcement officers have searched more than 3,000 acres using established search-and-rescue methods, the sheriff’s office said.

Father of missing 4-year-old says people were ‘snooping’ around the house before her disappearance

The search for a missing 4-year-old has entered its third day, and the child’s father said people were “snooping” around the house.

Since Javeayah Kemauni Harris was reported missing Tuesday night from her home in Aiken, South Carolina, authorities said they have searched 3,000 acres.

The search resumed Friday morning, Aiken County deputies said.

“Not knowing is killing me,” her father, Johmarea Harris, told News 12. “It’s killing me, like, because, like, I mean, you see stuff like this often, but you don’t expect it to be you.”

As for the girl’s mom, “She’s still a little tore, but she’s making it,” he said.

Harris said that he was out of the house when the girl was reported missing, but he knew something was going on when he saw a lot of patrol vehicles in the area. He was doing laundry and had visited a convenience store, he said.

“I was seeing a lot of police and stuff going through. And I was wondering, I was like, you know what I’m saying, you know, a lot of stuff goes on in Aiken to where you would be, like, OK, it’s a police or whatever,” he said. “But you know, I didn’t know that it was my house. But my girlfriend, at the time she didn’t have service. She didn’t have a service on her phone, so she couldn’t call me to let me know anything that was going on. So she just ended up calling 911. So when I came back to the house, before I got on my road, I seen a police truck with a drone out.”

He said that’s when he sped up.

“Cause I was like, it’s something going down like close to my house. When I got turned on my road, I seen a whole bunch of police is like right in my house. So that’s when I hurried up and I got to the house and I was like, what’s going on?” he said. “I thought my girlfriend was in labor because she was supposed to have a baby. You know what I’m saying? So she ended up having a child that same night on July 1st. But she came up crying to me saying, Javeayah is missing.”

Harris also said that Javeayah was not one to run away and that, despite some media reports, there is no indication she’s autistic.

He said they have no idea what could have happened to her.

“I have no clue. Like, sir. I don’t. I don’t, like, it’s really wild, but I had, like I said, I had, I had gave all of these detectives information about people snooping around the house lately,” Harris said.

Javeayah was reportedly last seen playing with chickens in the family’s coop around 8 p.m. Tuesday night.

Aiken County Sheriff Marty Saywer said the information authorities have is that she wandered away on her own, and that, “this is still a search effort.”

Sad, but not shocking. I did not like the dad's attempt of an explanation one little bit.

Parents denied bond: Missing 4-year-old out of Aiken has ties to the Upstate

The parents of missing 4-year-old, Javeayah Harris, were both denied bond on Sunday, according to court records.

Johmarea Harris and Michilae Herring are charged with homicide by child abuse in the death of their 4-year-old daughter, Javeayah Harris.

They had separate hearings on Sunday, in which they were both denied bond.

Sheriff Marty Sawyer released the following statement:

"This is the hardest announcement in my 36 years working in law enforcement. I am deeply saddened to tell you our investigation and evidence leads us to believe 4-year-old Javeayah Harris is deceased. It is the outcome that we all feared and sadly, it is now what we face and we will face it together as a community. Our search for Javeayah drives on. We are continuing to put massive law enforcement resources to work. We all hoped and prayed to find her alive, but it is still extremely important we bring her home. We are searching an area of interest not in Aiken County. Today, I am announcing that we have arrested Javeayah’s parents. We have arrested her dad, 23-year-old Johmarea Harris for homicide by child abuse and her mom, 22-year-old Michilae Herring, for homicide by child abuse, and filing a false police report. Additional charges may be forthcoming. We have spoken to Javeayah’s extended family and we ask for you to respect their privacy. We can only imagine what they are going through. We put every resource available to find Javeayah to bring her home safely. Sadly, it was already too late to save her the moment the 911 call came in on June 30th. At this time, our investigation supports that she has been deceased for at least 1 month. I want to express my sincere gratitude to every law enforcement agency, local, state, and federal, and our volunteer fire departments in Aiken County, who stood alongside us throughout this process. There are too many to name but specifically Special Agent in Charge Kevin Moore with FBI Columbia, Chief Keel with SLED, Sheriff Rowland with Edgefield County, Sheriff Koon with Lexington County, Sheriff Boan with Kershaw County, Sheriff Gino Brantley with Richmond County, Chief Barranco with Aiken Public Safety and Chief Johnson with North Augusta Public Safety, Paul Matthews with Aiken County Aiken County Department of Emergency Management and all the other Sheriff’s throughout South Carolina who called me offering their support and encouragement, throughout this whole process. The professionalism, cooperation, and dedication demonstrated by everyone involved has been nothing short of exceptional. Every agency brought valuable resources, specialized expertise and an unwavering commitment to our mission. I also want to thank you, our media partners, from covering this investigation, helping spread Javeayah’s picture to our community in hopes of locating her. And finally, I want to thank our community. From the encouragement, patience, prayers and support you have shown have meant more than words can express. We received an overwhelming amount of support, through shared information, donations of food and water and countless acts of kindness that reminded us why we are so proud to serve this community. I would also like to especially Bethel Baptist Church for opening their doors and providing food, water, air conditioning, and restrooms."

911 call released from Javeayah Harris’ mom for missing child

The frantic 911 call that launched the search for 4-year-old Javeayah Harris has now been released, offering a chilling look back at the first moments of a case that has since led to murder charges against the little girl’s own parents.

The recording, obtained from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, captures Javeayah’s mother, Michilae Herring, crying as she tells a dispatcher her daughter has disappeared from the family’s home.

“I can’t find my baby!” she cries. “She was outside playing.”

Herring repeatedly sounds distressed, telling the dispatcher she cannot find the child and pleading for deputies to hurry.

At one point during the call, Herring also offers her own theory about what may have happened, suggesting crackheads walking around her neighborhood.

“What worries me is these crackheads that walk behind the house. I have always felt weird about them,” Herring says.

The comment now carries added significance given what investigators would later uncover.

Meanwhile, arrest warrants reveal that both parents confessed to killing Javeayah and dumping her body in another location sometime between May 1 and June 15. The warrants suggest Herring killed her daughter and the father did nothing to seek medical treatment for the fatal injury. The injury suffered by the girl is redacted in these warrants:

Javeayah was reported missing the evening of June 30 after Herring called 911 from the family’s home, claiming she had last seen the child playing near a chicken coop.

Court testimony has also revealed new details about the days leading up to the arrests.

Investigators testified that Herring’s uncle, June Bugg, had been texting Herring weeks earlier asking about Javeayah’s whereabouts because he had not seen the child.
