13-year-old girl from Gary, Indiana missing for nearly 2 months; FBI now investigating

Saturday marked 55 days since a 13-year-old girl went missing in Gary, Indiana, and her loved ones have not stopped their efforts.

Family members told ABC7 they were pleased to see the FBI is now involved in the investigation as a search warrant was executed Saturday at Ja'Niyah McMichael's home.

"We're not gonna stop until we find her and bring her home," McMichael's grandma Dalia Guerrero said.

McMichael's loved ones continue an emotional and relentless search for the 13-year-old girl, who was last seen August 11 in Gary, Indiana.

The FBI and Gary police executed a search warrant Saturday on the home where McMichael stayed.

A local community activist provided photos to ABC7 as he's been helping the family search for the teen for weeks now.

"It's a victim, and we finally have people's attention, so we're still searching for Ja'Niyah," said Kevin Collins with KC Body Guard Services.

That public attention is what McMichael's grandmother is asking for as she continues to follow every tip in hopes of finding her granddaughter.

"Ja'Niyah is very outgoing she lights the room up she's very loving to be around... it's been too long... the not knowing is the worst," Guerrero said.

The Gary Police Department confirmed it is continuing to work with the FBI in searching for McMichael, but it is are urging the community to report possible tips to them rather than posting rumors on social media.

"There has been a slew of bad information that has been going around that can possibly hurt or hinder this case," said Lisette Guillen with Case Files Chicago.

Loved ones continue to pray for McMichael to come home.

"If Ja'Niyah is listening, just know your nonna loves you... your family loves you... you have the world looking for you," McMichael's grandmother said.

‘We need closure’: Family of missing girl, 14, still searching for answers

Ja’Niyah McMichael-Rogers is still not home, and even money doesn’t seem to be helping.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with the Gary Police Department, has upped the reward for the missing teen to $30,000 for information on her disappearance, her grandmother Dalia Guerrero said during a Sunday afternoon vigil commemorating the 18 1/2 months Ja’niyah has been declared missing. If no one saying anything about her whereabouts because a young girl is missing is heartbreaking enough, leaving money on the table is inexplicable to her.

“I don’t get it,” Guerrero said. “We need closure.”

Ja’Niyah’s dad, Antonio Rogers of Chicago, doesn’t understand how she could be gone this long, either. No one’s ever caught her on camera leaving, so he doesn’t believe she’s been trafficked.

“There’ve been no leads since the first one, and I’ve searched my own leads,” he said. “How does nobody know where she is?

“My number is on all these flyers. Ja’Niyah, your daddy’s here, and I’m not giving up.”

For Antwainae Rogers, Ja’Niyah’s aunt and Antonio’s twin sister, it’s been brutal watching Antonio struggle with her gone.

“I see (Ja’Niyah’s) pictures, and that could be my daughter,” she said. “Me as a mom, I would be out there every day about my child.”

Ja’Niyah McMichael-Rogers has been missing since Aug. 12, 2024, the Post-Tribune previously reported. Jasmine McMichael, Ja’Niyah McMichael’s mother, first reported her daughter missing from their home in the 1900 block of Malcolm X Drive in Gary. Ja’Niyah was seen wearing a black hoodie, black pajamas and red and black Air Jordans.

The city of Gary first released an update on Ja’Niyah’s disappearance on Oct. 5, 2024. The city said it was working with the FBI and Department of Child Services to investigate the case, reported tips and leads, according to the city’s website.

“We strongly urge the public to refrain from sharing unvetted information as this can severely impede the ongoing investigation,” the release said. “Our actions to date have been aimed at ensuring compliance with the law and preserving the integrity of the investigation.”

Another update on McMichael’s investigation has not been shared since the city announced the reward money.

In September 2025, Darnell Compton Jr., 31, was charged with starting a brawl during a search party for Ja’Niyah, according to Post-Tribune archives. He was charged with three counts of battery, one count of strangulation and three misdemeanors.

In June, Compton took a plea deal that dismissed the battery counts, strangulation count and domestic battery misdemeanor, according to online court records. He pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors: striking a law enforcement animal and resisting law enforcement.

Compton received a sentence of 262 days, which he had already served, according to court records.

Guerrero said Sunday she just wants her granddaughter home.

“If it’s foul play, I need to see her. She needs to be laid to rest,” she said.

Anyone with information is urged to come forward, according to a previous news release from the FBI and city of Gary. Tips can be anonymously submitted to the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or online at tips.fbi.gov.

FBI, Gary police renew calls for information in search for missing teenage girl last seen in 2024

The FBI and Gary Police are renewing their calls for information in their continued search for a missing teenage girl last seen in 2024.

Ja'Niyah McMichael was reported missing by her mother on Aug. 12, 2024, from their home in the 1900 block of Malcolm X Boulevard.

The push for information comes as the family plans to hold a balloon release to celebrate her 15th birthday on Tuesday.

Authorities say that she may be the victim of foul play.

At the time of her disappearance, Ja'Niyah was last seen wearing black pajama pants, a black hooded sweatshirt, and red and black shoes. According to authorities, she has known connections to Gary and East Chicago in Indiana.

There is still a $20,000 reward for information that will lead to her return home, and the arrest and conviction of the people responsible for her disappearance.

Anyone with information can anonymously submit tips to the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324), Gary, or online at tips.fbi.gov.

I watched a documentary on Gary one time. I think I probably mentioned it in here. Not a very safe place. I had no idea. I wonder if anybody that has a tip would turn it in because I don’t think they trust law-enforcement.

Northwest Indiana grandma pleads for answers in case of missing teen Ja’Niyah McMichael

For the last two years, the disappearance of her oldest grandchild has left a hole in Dalia Guerrero's heart.

Ja'Niyah McMichael was last seen on Aug. 11, 2024, in Gary. She was the oldest of Guerrero's 11 grandchildren.

"Ja'Niyah is a loving and bright girl," Guerrero said. "She brightens up the room; she brightens up my world. She's very funny, loves to do hair and nails. She loves to dance, and she did a lot of TikToks. She's just a kid."

The last time Guerrero saw McMichael was on her 13th birthday in April 2024. McMichael would be 15 years old now.

“I didn’t know that was going to be the last time ever holding her or kissing her or hearing her voice,” Guerrero said. “We want her home. We want answers.”

The case is being investigated by the Gary Police Department with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigations and National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Guerrero said she contacts the GPD every two weeks for any progress on the case.

The most recent update was issued by the FBI in April 2025. Investigators believed McMichael may have been a victim of foul play, according to previous reporting. Guerrero said no FBI officials have told her why foul play was suspected.

“Nobody has shown me any proof to say that she’s no longer with us, but the FBI is adamant about it,” Guerrero said. “If that’s the case, she needs to be laid to rest. We need closure. We need justice for her."

The City of Gary and FBI previously pledged a combined $20,000 reward for information that would lead officials to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for McMichael's disappearance. USPA Nationwide, a private security company that often hands out grants for missing children's cases, pledged an additional $10,000.

Still, the family has no answers.

Jasmine McMichael, the mother of Ja’Niyah McMichael, initially reported that Ja’Niyah ran away following an argument they had the night before.

The last conversation they had ended when Ja’Niyah went upstairs and slammed her bedroom door shut. Jasmine McMichael woke up the next day to find that her front and back doors were unlocked, and Ja’Niyah was gone.

“There’s no punishment behind her running away. We can work it out,” Jasmine McMichael previously said. “We miss her, and we want her to come home.”

A community search party was conducted just two weeks after she was reported missing. The group searched a five-mile radius through abandoned buildings, alleys and anything in between.

Indiana State Police issued a statewide silver alert on Sept. 5, 2024, for Ja'Niyah McMichael four weeks after her disappearance. At this time, the GPD informed the public McMichael was believed to be in extreme danger and may require medical assistance, according to a release.

FBI officials and Gary detectives secured a search warrant of the family's house on Oct. 5, 2024. It is unclear what evidence, if any, was recovered from the home.

The Times reached out to the FBI and GPD for the latest updates on the investigation. FBI deferred any questions to GPD, as it is the lead department on the investigation.

"The Gary Police Department remains deeply committed to finding justice for Ja'Niyah McMichael and bringing answers to her family," GPD said. "We continue to actively investigate this case, with detectives reviewing evidence and following up on leads as they become available. To protect the integrity of this ongoing investigation, we are unable to release investigative reports or discuss specific details at this time."

Guerrero said she doesn't blame police for the recent lack of updates regarding McMichael's disappearance. She tries her best to spread the word herself. She makes posts on social media groups and reaches out to newspapers, TV shows and radio shows for any chance to get the word out.

Almost every day, she takes her stack of missing posters and hands them out to people on the street, in the grocery store or at the park. At nearly every gas station in the Region, and even some in Illinois and Wisconsin, Guerrero has left a poster of McMichael.

McMichael's siblings and extended family continue to share her story.

"For me, I don't stop. No one should ever stop," Guerrero said. "Even if it's 10, 20 years from now, I'm still going to keep doing what I'm doing."

Guerrero said she hoped McMichael could see the efforts of her family and the thousands of strangers who have volunteered to pass out fliers or make posts on social media.

She said she hopes people remember her name and shares her story.

"She is a piece of my puzzle that is missing, and I will never rest until I find her," she said. "Until my last breath. I just can't stop."
