Toddler Missing From Babysitter's House in Lowell; ‘Enormous' Search Underway

A young boy went missing from his babysitter's house in Lowell, Massachusetts, Tuesday, prompting a massive search of the area involving scores of first responders on foot, in the air, in the water and on horseback, officials said.

The boy, who's been identified as a 3-year-old from Lowell named Harry, was reported missing from a babysitter's house on Freda Lane about 9:30 a.m., interim Lowell Police Superintendent Barry Golner said. Fifteen minutes earlier, the child was seen playing in the babysitter's backyard.

Harry was last seen in gray pants with white stripe and a long-sleeved maroon shirt, police said. Anyone with information on where Harry might be is asked to call 911 or Lowell police at 978-937-3200.

Between 150 and 180 members of law enforcement and fire departments were involved in the search, checking around homes in Lowell's Pawtucketville neighborhood and in nearby woods, as well as in bodies of water, Golner said. Police were on ATVs, bicycles and horseback; they were also using K-9s and drones to find Harry.

"There's an enormous amount of assets that have been amassed to help look for and find this child, and we're going to continue those efforts until we do find the child," he said.

There were no indications of foul play. Authorities said neighbors had been helpful as officials scoured the area on a hot day, and they asked for continued help.

"As residents come home from work…take a look very, very thoroughly through your vehicles that may have been there, through your sheds, through your window wells, through your houses," said Sudbury Police Chief Scott Nix, who was helping to lead the search.

He described the boy's family as concerned.

it's within blocks of Merimac River and a huge pond on the farm and more ponds at the end of Freda road.

I see the pond in this picture but on switching it to show trees and terrain, etc. I don't see it unless the water in it is green in color, if so I see the spot it may be. And the tent and such and field was near the buildings on the Twitter link. As far as the big body of water on Pawtuckett that's too far from the farm I figure. And cops were stationed around the field not a body of water, but maybe that was just to keep onlookers out...

I got to looking closer and i am pretty sure it was the pond at the farm where they found him.

Look at the location of where they are gathered on this video

and then look at this

Unless the pond is that darker green area in the center on the bottom, I don't see water near the field and buildings. If that is the pond, it is pretty green, it looks like grass or field.

That's the pond. It's very clear when I zoom way in on comp screen. It is very algae covered in the Google view so possibly just a very, very swampy area.

That farm is listed as a Christmas tree farm so a pond would be a must I would think. Keeping newly planted seedlings watered comes to mind.

Well then it is I guess close to where LE was, the officers and the tent. It is interesting though that so far they haven't said he was found in the water have they? I can understand not providing the cause of death but generally we hear if found in a body of water. Or have they? I missed it if they did. I'd really like to know how far down Freda the sitter's home was. I mean there is a pool and more before he would ever get to that farm but who knows the route of a 3 year old or if it backed up to the area maybe or something.

They are keeping so much on this one quiet for some reason.

it was the pond :sigh:

Well that fits then.

I do wonder how far he went and if anyone saw him. How is it these children just find water, I mean he is 3 years old, and how did he get away.

I don't know if I've ever seen a case they never provide the child or family's names. Not that it matters. Like all cases though, it should be looked into and I don't know, what does everyone think, should people be aware of who the babysitter is? I mean others may leave their children in his/her care.

He was just a baby.

maybe somewhere they walked to often? It was right down from the babysitter so that's possible. He also might have been the type that is just a runner. Some just run and if a body of water is in their path, they just blast right on in.

Maybe. It just seems like why once could they just not find a child wandering three blocks away, no water entered--just seems most cases like this they always find it...

An older child might have been turned off by the dirty look of the water but not at the age of 3 I suppose...

It sounded like he was realized to be missing within 15 minutes. If only he had been sighted and found quickly. If only the tree farm owners had been outside and seen him, if only someone had seen him alone on the road or walking through back yards, etc. Why is it that can never happen! :(

Being on the spectrum, he most likely was drawn to it. There is definitely a strong correlation between kids with autism and being fascinated by water. Clean or dirty. I had a strong feeling about water as soon as I looked at that map and saw water all around and very close and especially that pond. That's why i looked again at that footage and matched it up.

yes, I sure wish somebody would have seen the little guy wandering and took him in.

‘Harry Will Truly Be Missed': Memorial Service Held for Boy, 3, Found Dead in Pond

Family and friends gathered this weekend to remember the life of a 3-year-old boy who was found dead earlier this month in a pond in Lowell, Massachusetts, one day after going missing from his babysitter's house.

Many who gathered at the Waltham middle school Saturday to share condolences and prayers for the boy's family were involved in the search for Harry Kkonde after he went missing on June 14.

During Saturday's service, Harry's dad and a representative from the Uganda Boston Community Association spoke about how the community is hurting from this devastating loss.

"Harry will truly be missed," Samuel Kkonde said. "My heart breaks wherever I hear the loss of a child. I know my life will never be the same without my Harry in it."

"We need to pray for the babysitter, too, to take time for both parties to heal but as a community we need to start the healing process by...loving and forgiving each other," the UBCA representative said.

A fundraiser for Harry's funeral expenses raised thousands of dollars. The family is planning a burial for Harry in Uganda in the coming days.
