Gabriel was abducted by his mother, Elizabeth Joanne Johnson, from Tempe, Arizona on December 18, 2009. She took him to San Antonio, Texas, driving her grandfather's white 1995 Oldsmobile Delta 88. They arrived on December 22 and stayed in two motels in the area.

Gabriel was last seen with his mother on December 27. She left San Antonio by Greyhound bus that same day, without the baby, leaving her grandfather's car behind in San Antonio.

She was supposed to appear for a custody hearing in family court in Arizona on December 28, but she never showed up and a warrant for custodial interference was issued.

Elizabeth was arrested at youth hostel in Miami Beach, Florida on December 30. Gabriel wasn't with her at the time; he has never been heard from again. Elizabeth was later indicted for custodial interference, kidnapping and child abuse.

On December 27, Gabriel's father, Logan Scott McQueary, got a series of disturbing text messages from Elizabeth. She stated he would never see Gabriel again and that she had killed him and thrown him in a trash bin. She also called him and repeated that she had killed the baby.

She later said those claims were false and she only made them up to upset McQueary. Elizabeth stated she had given Gabriel to a man and a childless woman whom she met in a San Antonio park. She considered it to be a closed adoption.

She said she spent three days with the couple, but she deliberately tried not to remember their last names or what their car looked like so she would not be able to take Gabriel back if she changed her mind. Elizabeth stated the woman's first name was Cheryl, but she didn't remember the man's name.

At the time of his disappearance, Gabriel was being considered for adoption by Tammi Peters Smith and Jack Smith, a couple who lived near the child's home. They spent a few weeks with him in December and had bonded with him.

McQueary, who is Elizabeth's ex-boyfriend, was refusing to give up his parental rights. He stated he felt the Smiths were trying to coerce him into agreeing to the adoption. Photographs of Elizabeth, McQueary and the Smiths are posted with this case summary.

Tammi and Jack are considered persons of interest in Gabriel's disappearance, as they were the last people to see him before he left Arizona. Authorities stated they thought the Smiths might be withholding information as to Gabriel's whereabouts.

The Smiths supported Elizabeth and said they believed Gabriel was safe and might be returned home if McQueary agreed to relinquish custody to them.

In February 2010, Tammi was arrested and charged with forgery, custodial interference and conspiracy to commit custodial interference in Gabriel's case.

According to court documents, Tammi had played a "deceptive role" in the investigation, making numerous false statements to the media and the police, as well as withholding information from investigators. She maintains her innocence.

Tammi did admit that she wrote the name of one of her cousins on a paternity document stating he, not McQueary, was Gabriel's biological father. In May 2012, Tammi was convicted of all charges.

In March 2010, three months after Gabriel's disappearance, McQueary was granted full custody of him and Elizabeth was denied visitation or any access to the child.

Ken Gamble, a private investigator hired by McQueary, believes Gabriel is alive and was given away or sold by Elizabeth to a couple in San Antonio. Gamble stated he had evidence that a third party arranged for Elizabeth to meet this couple and give Gabriel for them to adopt.

Gamble described the man and woman as being in their thirties or forties. The man was tall with short dark hair; the woman was about 5'6 tall and had long blonde hair. Gamble said he thought the couple was aware their adoption of Gabriel wasn't legal, and Gabriel is probably no longer in the San Antonio area. He may be disguised as a girl.

An adoption expert stated the Homegate Hotel, one of the San Antonio hotels where Elizabeth stayed, is known in adoption circles. Adoption agencies put birth mothers in the hotel to meet adoptive parents and complete the paperwork. In illegal or "underground" adoptions, the birth mother will usually bring the child to meet the adoptive parents in a public place.

The last known photographs of Gabriel were taken with Elizabeth's cellular phone in the Homegate Hotel. In several of them, he is seen holding a medicine bottle, possibly infant Tylenol, and appears lethargic, with his eyes are half-closed.

A babysitter hired by Elizabeth during this time, who didn't know Gabriel had been kidnapped, stated Elizabeth told her she had given Gabriel some medicine and to give him more if he became fussy.

Elizabeth reportedly confessed to Gabriel's murder a third time during a jailhouse interview with a police detective in May 2010. Her attorneys stated she was taking medication at the time of the interview and moved to have it excluded as evidence because they had not been present when it took place.

McQueary stated Elizabeth was unstable and had once ransacked his apartment and cut up his clothing. Elizabeth's grandfather believes she may suffer from bipolar disorder.

In jail, Elizabeth was disruptive, refused to eat and assaulted other inmates. She was eventually removed to the jail's psychiatric unit. At court appearances, when she was asked about Gabriel, she repeatedly invoked her Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination.

In June 2010, she was ruled incompetent to stand trial. She spent three months in court-ordered treatment and was found competent in September.

Elizabeth was tried in October 2012. She was convicted of custodial interference and unlawful imprisonment, but the jury was unable to reach a verdict on the kidnapping charge. Although her lawyer argued for probation, she was sentenced to five and a quarter years in prison. She got credit for three years' time served.

Elizabeth apologized for her actions at her December 2012 sentencing and said she'd given Gabriel away because she wanted him to have a better life. She was released from prison in July 2014.

Authorities are investigating Gabriel's disappearance as a kidnapping/homicide. They stated they believe Elizabeth probably killed her son and they are considering filing murder charges against her. Gabriel remains missing and his case is unsolved.

I think she has the same personality as Casey Anthony, and so many others who don’t care about human life. Even their own children. I don’t understand how they can live with themselves, but they certainly do.

Gabriel is long gone, I’m afraid. This whole story is so tragic.
Quite honestly, I think so too and it is where I lean the strongest. She killed him. She does seem the type, as you say, like Casey and too many others. And she hasn't had to pay for it yet. They need to maybe take another hard look at this case to see if they can't bring other charges as often happens these days but then I suppose the statute of limitations have probably expired on all but murder so there wouldn't be anything.

Hoping justice gets served one day, the sooner the better, and that it is served cold to her.

I get so tired of cases too where they violate conditions of bond or probation, etc. and NOTHING is done about it.

And she has another child now. SMH.

No word as to what these clues might be.

New clues found in 14-year-old San Antonio mystery of Baby Gabriel's disappearance
Fourteen years ago 8-month-old Gabriel Johnson disappeared in San Antonio. The last person to see him alive was his beautiful young mother who had kidnapped him in Arizona from his father. Since that day Logan McQueary and his family have been looking for Gabriel.

This past year I was part of a docu-series that followed Elizabeth Johnson's steps here in San Antonio before Gabriel disappeared. She has claimed she gave him to a couple that people in Arizona had arranged to take him from her and give him a new life.

This past year through Abel Pena and Project Absentis, new clues about what happened to Gabriel have been uncovered. We hope they will bring news to Gabriel's paternal family who has not stopped looking for or loving him.

Pena, a retired FBI agent, hopes that with the new clues, SAPD detectives will be able to solve this San Antonio mystery.

As for me, I will continue helping where I can just as I did 14 years ago when Gabriel first disappeared.

Mystery Deepens: 15 years later will new information bring 'Baby Gabriel' home?
He disappeared 15 years ago. Elizabeth Johnson, his mother, was the last person to see him alive, according to the San Antonio Police Department. So, where does the investigation into the disappearance of 8-month-old Baby Gabriel stand?

Since his disappearance, I have investigated this case including the mistakes made by law enforcement agencies here and in Arizona.

For Logan McQueary, his son Gabriel will always remain frozen in time, remembered as he was just 8 months old.

It was 2009—the last time Logan held his son in his arms—before Gabriel disappeared, becoming one of San Antonio's enduring mysteries.

His mother Elizabeth Johnson, served time for custodial interference.

Elizabeth was the last person to see Gabriel alive, later telling his father that she had killed their son.

When Johnson was arrested in Florida she told the FBI that the plan had been to give Gabriel up to a couple in a park in San Antonio. And that's what she still says she did.

Earlier this year, retired FBI agent Abel Peña participated in a documentary that investigated Gabriel’s disappearance, shedding new light on the case.

“We’ve made a couple of trips to Arizona. I met with a person who was very interested in talking to us about Baby Gabriel, " said Abel Peña.

Peña, who is the Managing Director of the nonprofit Project Absentis, believes the information he received may hold the key to the child’s disappearance.

“Apparently, this person had a very close relationship with both Robert and Elizabeth Johnson. They conveyed a story vastly different from what’s been reported to the press—that Baby Gabriel was put up for adoption or taken by strangers. The story I heard was quite different from that. I can’t share the details, but I know police have copies of the interview I conducted and are reviewing it," revealed the retired FBI agent.

This lead, like many others over the years, gives the family hope that Gabriel will be found alive.

“I would want him to know that his dad and the whole family have never given up looking for him," said Sandy Peters.

Peters is Gabriel’s great-aunt and has been helping the child's father search for Gabriel for 15 years.

“I think there’s a possibility he may no longer be with us. But I just can’t understand how she could have a baby one day and not the next, and face no consequences. I’ve spoken to the San Antonio Police Department many times, asking how this can happen without charges.”

Peters believes the attorney general’s office, with its resources, could finally bring justice to Gabriel’s case. She has contacted the state office but has been unable to get SAPD to invite the agency to assist in the 15-year-old investigation.

“They’ve said they’re more than willing to help San Antonio. They’ve got investigators and a budget ready. It’s a very generous offer, and I’m hoping it will happen.”

Despite this offer, the case remains unresolved, leaving loved ones in painful uncertainty.

“There are tough times when you don’t hear anything for a long time, but you learn to live with it. We think about Gabriel every day, keeping faith that he’s somewhere, happy, and that someday Logan will see him again," Peters said.

New lead emerges in 16-year-old disappearance of baby Gabriel Johnson
New details have surfaced in the mysterious disappearance of Gabriel Johnson, a baby who vanished 16 years ago.

Gabriel was last seen in San Antonio after his mother, Elizabeth Johnson, fled Arizona with him, defying a court order. Although she was later convicted in Arizona for custodial interference, Gabriel's whereabouts remain unknown.

Sandy Peters, Gabriel's great aunt, expressed frustration over the lack of charges against Johnson in Bexar County, despite a recorded admission where Johnson claimed to have killed Gabriel, only to later retract it. "She's in prison for years and never tells us anything. That's what makes this so hard," Peters said.

A recent phone call has reignited hope for the family. The caller, connected to the missing child, revealed, "There are things Elizabeth told me that have been tormenting me for years. She told me she killed the baby. I really thought she was taking it to the grave." However, when detectives traveled to Arizona, the individual denied the conversation, leaving the case unresolved.

The family has urged the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) to transfer the case to the Texas Attorney General’s Cold Case and Missing Persons’ Unit. Peters noted, "The Attorney General's Office... offered to do that in our case... but they wouldn't let the Attorney General's Office come in and help."

SAPD stated, "He (Gabriel) is still missing. Leads are very few, but all are followed. The case is pending further investigation."

Adding a glimmer of hope, Lois Gibson, a former forensic artist for Houston PD, reviewed images of another child and found a striking resemblance to Gabriel's father, Logan McQuery. Peters remarked, "The match between that child and Logan is uncanny. That gives us hope."

As Gabriel would now be 16 years old, his family continues to hold onto hope. Peters shared a heartfelt message: "Merry Christmas, Gabriel. If you’re out there, know you’re loved, you’re missed, and we hope nothing but the best for you in your life."

Praying they get an outcome and answer here.

Coming into this old one was triggering, an infant, his little sweet face, it just reminds me beyond what I expected of ours. I did not recall the case until I came in. Didn't read too much as again kind of triggered just seeing his infant face.

I sure hope they get some answers and I hope they are better ones than some things make it appear and that he is still alive.
