  • Sex Male
  • Race White
  • Date of Birth 05/03/2009 (11)
  • Age 7 months old
  • Height and Weight 2'0, 20 pounds
  • Distinguishing Characteristics Caucasian male. Light brown hair, blue eyes.

Gabriel was abducted by his mother, Elizabeth Joanne Johnson, from Tempe, Arizona on December 18, 2009. She took him to San Antonio, Texas, driving her grandfather's white 1995 Oldsmobile Delta 88. They arrived on December 22 and stayed in two motels in the area.

Gabriel was last seen with his mother on December 27. She left San Antonio by Greyhound bus that same day, without the baby, leaving her grandfather's car behind in San Antonio.

She was supposed to appear for a custody hearing in family court in Arizona on December 28, but she never showed up and a warrant for custodial interference was issued.

Elizabeth was arrested at youth hostel in Miami Beach, Florida on December 30. Gabriel wasn't with her at the time; he has never been heard from again. Elizabeth was later indicted for custodial interference, kidnapping and child abuse.

On December 27, Gabriel's father, Logan Scott McQueary, got a series of disturbing text messages from Elizabeth. She stated he would never see Gabriel again and that she had killed him and thrown him in a trash bin. She also called him and repeated that she had killed the baby.

She later said those claims were false and she only made them up to upset McQueary. Elizabeth stated she had given Gabriel to a man and a childless woman whom she met in a San Antonio park. She considered it to be a closed adoption.

She said she spent three days with the couple, but she deliberately tried not to remember their last names or what their car looked like so she would not be able to take Gabriel back if she changed her mind. Elizabeth stated the woman's first name was Cheryl, but she didn't remember the man's name.

At the time of his disappearance, Gabriel was being considered for adoption by Tammi Peters Smith and Jack Smith, a couple who lived near the child's home. They spent a few weeks with him in December and had bonded with him.

McQueary, who is Elizabeth's ex-boyfriend, was refusing to give up his parental rights. He stated he felt the Smiths were trying to coerce him into agreeing to the adoption. Photographs of Elizabeth, McQueary and the Smiths are posted with this case summary.

Tammi and Jack are considered persons of interest in Gabriel's disappearance, as they were the last people to see him before he left Arizona. Authorities stated they thought the Smiths might be withholding information as to Gabriel's whereabouts.

The Smiths supported Elizabeth and said they believed Gabriel was safe and might be returned home if McQueary agreed to relinquish custody to them.

In February 2010, Tammi was arrested and charged with forgery, custodial interference and conspiracy to commit custodial interference in Gabriel's case.

According to court documents, Tammi had played a "deceptive role" in the investigation, making numerous false statements to the media and the police, as well as withholding information from investigators. She maintains her innocence.

Tammi did admit that she wrote the name of one of her cousins on a paternity document stating he, not McQueary, was Gabriel's biological father. In May 2012, Tammi was convicted of all charges.

In March 2010, three months after Gabriel's disappearance, McQueary was granted full custody of him and Elizabeth was denied visitation or any access to the child.

Ken Gamble, a private investigator hired by McQueary, believes Gabriel is alive and was given away or sold by Elizabeth to a couple in San Antonio. Gamble stated he had evidence that a third party arranged for Elizabeth to meet this couple and give Gabriel for them to adopt.

Gamble described the man and woman as being in their thirties or forties. The man was tall with short dark hair; the woman was about 5'6 tall and had long blonde hair. Gamble said he thought the couple was aware their adoption of Gabriel wasn't legal, and Gabriel is probably no longer in the San Antonio area. He may be disguised as a girl.

An adoption expert stated the Homegate Hotel, one of the San Antonio hotels where Elizabeth stayed, is known in adoption circles. Adoption agencies put birth mothers in the hotel to meet adoptive parents and complete the paperwork. In illegal or "underground" adoptions, the birth mother will usually bring the child to meet the adoptive parents in a public place.

The last known photographs of Gabriel were taken with Elizabeth's cellular phone in the Homegate Hotel. In several of them, he is seen holding a medicine bottle, possibly infant Tylenol, and appears lethargic, with his eyes are half-closed.

A babysitter hired by Elizabeth during this time, who didn't know Gabriel had been kidnapped, stated Elizabeth told her she had given Gabriel some medicine and to give him more if he became fussy.

Elizabeth reportedly confessed to Gabriel's murder a third time during a jailhouse interview with a police detective in May 2010. Her attorneys stated she was taking medication at the time of the interview and moved to have it excluded as evidence because they had not been present when it took place.

McQueary stated Elizabeth was unstable and had once ransacked his apartment and cut up his clothing. Elizabeth's grandfather believes she may suffer from bipolar disorder.

In jail, Elizabeth was disruptive, refused to eat and assaulted other inmates. She was eventually removed to the jail's psychiatric unit. At court appearances, when she was asked about Gabriel, she repeatedly invoked her Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination.

In June 2010, she was ruled incompetent to stand trial. She spent three months in court-ordered treatment and was found competent in September.

Elizabeth was tried in October 2012. She was convicted of custodial interference and unlawful imprisonment, but the jury was unable to reach a verdict on the kidnapping charge. Although her lawyer argued for probation, she was sentenced to five and a quarter years in prison. She got credit for three years' time served.

Elizabeth apologized for her actions at her December 2012 sentencing and said she'd given Gabriel away because she wanted him to have a better life. She was released from prison in July 2014.

Authorities are investigating Gabriel's disappearance as a kidnapping/homicide. They stated they believe Elizabeth probably killed her son and they are considering filing murder charges against her. Gabriel remains missing and his case is unsolved.

I was commenting in another case and noticed we didn't have a thread for Gabriel. I don't remember having one for our previous forum, either. When looking up his case, I found that there was new information that came out about his case last year. Who followed his case when it broke? I sure did!

But why would this mother tell the baby's dad that she had killed the child? She texted Logan: ‘When I’m safe I’ll email u the exact location of dead Gabriel's little blue body.’

"I was trying to convince him because he didn’t believe me. He knew what I was going to do. I just was trying to make him not upset him, because there’s no relationship. As I was, but I would say, do things to each other and that’s what we’re doing to each other, we were in an unhealthy toxic relationship and I just try to hurt each other. That’s what he was trying to do with me with all the legal stuff. That I was trying to help him, that’s (the) only thing I could do and that I also blamed him for me giving away my baby, because I wanted to do it on my own," said Johnson.

This was not the first time Elizabeth had withheld where the baby was or said she had killed him while she and Gabriel's dad were fighting.

"At one point there was an entire investigation as to where Gabriel was... that right, Elizabeth?” asked the detective. “Yeah, no one would believe me," said Johnson.

Gabriel was found safe and sound all of those times.

“No, the plan was to go our separate ways and just disappear,” said Johnson.

She gave numerous fake names after leaving San Antonio.

"At the other hotel, I switched it to Victoria Evans,” said Johnson.

One alleged eyewitness claimed years ago, that Elizabeth gave Gabriel to a woman who's originally from a small town near Victoria, Texas. Authorities did have what is called a ping between a cell phone tower and Johnson's cell phone near Victoria around the time she claims to have given the baby to friends of the Smiths at Raymond Rimkus Park near Huebner road. Directions to the park were found on Johnson's journal.

"The way I see it is what do you have to lose if you tell them where the baby is,” said Bob Johnson, Elizabeth’s grandfather. “I told them everything and they took away my deal,” said Johnson.

"Do you have the name and address of the couple you gave the baby to?” asked Bob Johnson. “I don't have that and even if I did, they want me to do 3 to 4 years," said Johnson.

If alive, Gabriel Johnson is now 11 years old. This is the last age progression picture we were provided by authorities 6 years ago. This is what Gabriel looked like when he disappeared.

"He was wearing a long-sleeve yellow outfit," said Johnson.

According to his mother the outfit Gabriel had on the day he was handed to the couple at Raymond Rimkus Park, also had the word smile embroidered on it and he had a blue pacifier. Johnson also claimed that the couple had Gabriel's diaper bag. Police have reported that they believe Elizabeth stuffed dead Gabriel in that bag when she left the hotel. It was green with a white strap. Again a body was never found. Elizabeth had told Logan she dumped it off by a dumpster. That prompted a massive search at the landfill. Nothing was ever found.

And from a jailhouse visit with her grandfather, you can hear that he believes Elizabeth when she says the baby is alive.

“Do you want that adoptive family you gave the child to, to turn him over?” asked Bob Johnson. “No, because I am going to go to jail no matter what. I’m going to get charged with kidnapping no matter what!” said Johnson.

Logan McQueary and his family still have a Facebook page with information about Gabriel. You can send any tips there. Johnson now is free after serving some time for custodial interference. She lives in New Mexico, she’s married and has no children. 11 years later you wonder if Johnson still thinks her son is ok if he is alive.

"Do you still think Gabriel is safe?” asked the detective. “Yes, I still feel Gabriel is safe," said Johnson.

Pretty sure it was on the old site.
Very upsetting. Beautiful baby.

Take my son's missing person case out of McManus' hands, says Baby Gabriel's dad
In an exclusive Fox San Antonio interview, we hear from the father of the missing baby, Gabriel Johnson.

Logan McQueary is now asking the mayor and the city manager to help him to get answers as to who has been looking for his son for the last 12 years. This, after contradictions coming out of SAPD as to whether they have an open missing person case on his son.

Whether he’s dead or alive, Logan McQueary and his family say they deserve to know someone is looking into what happened to his son, Gabriel Johnson, who was last seen here in San Antonio with his mother in 2010.

"I feel like he's out there. He's alive somewhere. We just need that one little, little thing to lead us to lead them to us," says McQueary.

But where those leads may have gone is now another mystery for his family. The National Center of Missing and Exploited Children says there are tens of thousands of them.

However, the police department disputes that number and outlined they’ve received a total of only 17 leads between 2016 and 2020. That’s only part of what’s concerning the family. After three calls to the San Antonio Police Department last month, the family says they were told SAPD does *not* have a missing person case on Gabriel.

Dispatcher: “But as far as the missing person case is going it's going to be in Tempe.”

As we reported, McQueary’s aunt Sandy Peters recorded the third conversation with SAPD after not believing what she was being told.

Dispatcher, "But if Tempe closed their homicide case and San Antonio, as far as I know, doesn't have an open case. But, a missing person case going to be out of Tempe.”

Tempe police were surprised when we called and asked if they had the open missing person case on Baby Gabriel. They sent us this statement, that in part reads:

“The missing person case related to Gabriel was transferred to the San Antonio Police Department in January of 2010.”

“At that point, we notified and met with members of the San Antonio Police Department to hand off the investigation.”

Dispatcher. "It's not our case. And so any tips that we have, we would have forwarded to Tempe."

“We called Tempe and they have no clue, why San Antonio would even direct them towards Tempe because they don't have an open case it was closed years ago,” says McQueary.

So who’s been looking into the thousands of leads the center for missing and exploited children say they’ve sent to SAPD?

Tonight SAPD gave us an interview with an explanation of what caused what they say is a misunderstanding.

"It's very unfortunate that the information has been miscommunicated, what I want the family to know is that the San Antonio Police Department does still have an active missing person case," says Lieutenant Michelle Ramos, SAPD.

"I'm not sure that the number of leads that were called into the San Antonio police department but I know every lead that they did have that was viable they did follow up on," says Ramos.

Viable - according to Ramos means a lead with a number, a name, and address something they can follow up on. Now Gabriel’s father says he has no confidence in the San Antonio Police Department and is asking the mayor and the city manager to honor his family’s wishes since they are the victims in this case.

"I want this case out of Chief McManus’ hands. I don't think that he is overlooking everything," says McQueary. “Somebody needs to be held accountable for what's happened."

Search for child continues 12 years after disappearance

It was 12 years ago when 8-month-old baby Gabriel Johnson vanished from Arizona. He’s not been seen since.

“Now it’s 12 years later,” said Sandy Peters, Gabriel’s aunt. “And I’m realizing that I don’t care how long it is. I just want Gabriel.”

Peters has spent 12 years pushing investigators, private eyes and even online sleuths who follow the case on Facebook to action. She has even considered taking matters into her own hands.

“If I could just talk to Elizabeth, Gabriel’s mom, and find out the truth, no matter what it is, and swear I would never share it with anybody but Logan, I would be content with that,” Peters said.

She admits, however, that Gabriel is “probably” not alive.

“I think the not knowing is really what gets you,” McQueary said. “And I want to say that he’s still alive out there. I want him to meet my family that I have now. I want him to meet his brothers and his little sister. I hope someday that we can do that.”

Family celebrates 13th birthday for missing 'Baby Gabriel Johnson'
A milestone for a missing child who disappeared from San Antonio.

“We’ve never stopped looking for Gabriel, we never will. Every single day the first and last person we think about when every day is Gabriel. We are working with people around the United States to find you Gabriel” said Sandy Peters, Gabriel’s aunt. Today, if alive, Gabriel would be celebrating his 13th birthday.

Gabriel now would have siblings on both sides of his family. On his father’s side his siblings are celebrating his birthday May 3, with cake and other fun activities. The only thing they are missing according to them is Gabriel.

His mother Elizabeth Johnson Martinez had a baby girl 10 months ago. Peters is hoping Johnson will help them find the boy by finally sharing her side of the story. A story where she first said she had killed the baby. She later told FBI agents who found her after leaving San Antonio alone, she had made that up because she was angry. Johnson said she gave Gabriel to a couple at Raymond Rimkus Park who were friends of a family in Arizona and had wanted to adopt him, but Logan refused.

Today, Logan McQueary and his family still don’t know who is investigating the case since Tempe Police Department has said their case for Custodial Interference is closed. They say San Antonio Police have the Missing Persons case since Gabriel was last seen alive here. But SAPD says they are assisting Tempe and are sending all tips to them. For more than a year the family fears no one has looked at the leads. That is why they have retained Project Absentis to ensure that all leads called in are followed up on by law enforcement. Project Absentis is a non-profit organization made up of retired FBI and law enforcement agents. They are asking for all tips to go to SAPD. If you don’t want to go to law enforcement but have information you want to go to their website or call 726-777-1359. The call is anonymous.

I can’t remember, did his mother ever spend any time behind bars at all?

TEMPE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -- It’s a true crime case that’s gripped the Valley for more than 12 years — ‘Baby Gabriel’ went missing from Tempe just after Christmas in 2009. His mother, Elizabeth Johnson, first claimed she killed the baby, then said she gave him away to a couple at a park. He’s never been seen again, and this is still an open investigation, but now Elizabeth has taken new steps in court to try to make the story go away by changing her identity.

There’s still a chance Gabriel is alive, living with another family, and just doesn’t know his true identity. He’d now be 13 years old.

What bothers Gabriel’s family is that while they pour their hearts, time, and money into doing everything they can to find him, Elizabeth has given no answers to where he is, had another baby, and now is assuming a new identity.

<snip>

Fast forward to 2021, Elizabeth had a baby girl. In 2022, now a new identity. “I feel like she’s probably trying to hide from us. She’s probably…there are a lot of people who watch her or try to watch her and see what she’s up to,” said Sandy Peters. Peters is Gabriel’s great aunt, serving as a grandmother in his short life with their family.

Elizabeth, who had already changed her last name to Martinez years prior, was granted a legal name change this year to “Naomi Aragon” after citing “stalker and harassment” as a reason for seeking the change. It comes as the ‘Baby Gabriel’ case gains more and more publicity on podcasts, newscasts, and a soon-to-be docuseries.

That's the problem with legal name changes, court records are public. And right here we have her new name...

That’s what I was thinking! Why would she picked the name Naomi? I think maybe I’ve met one Naomi in my whole lifetime.
I had a relative by that name (passed now) and my uncle had a stepdaughter by that name. And that's it for my entire lifetime of any I've encountered. Very uncommon imo.

And yeah, I think people are going to remember the new name a whole lot easier (and be sure it is her) than Liz or Elizabeth or Beth or Lizzy Johnson.

New Docuseries sheds light on the San Antonio disappearance of baby Gabriel Johnson
It's a mystery I have covered as a reporter for 13 years, the disappearance of 8-month-old Gabriel Johnson. In that time there has been no sighting of the baby anywhere. His mother Elizabeth Johnson was the last person to see him alive. She claims to have given him up to a couple sent to pick him up for adoption at Raymond Rimkus Park in San Antonio.

Johnson served time behind bars in Arizona for Custodial Interference since the child's father Logan McQuery had custody of the baby. Johnson did her time and moved near Albuquerque, New Mexico.

In this new docuseries taped in San Antonio British producer Thomas Leader sheds new light on the investigation. Leader asked several reporters for help telling Gabriel's story including me. This is his effort to get international exposure to this missing child's case.

Project Absentis, led by Abel Pena and other retired federal agents, has now joined the search at the request of the family. The work they have done has given new life to the search helping SAPD, who has the case, to find new clues.

The lead Detective on the case 13 years ago was Jesse Salame, he is now the Chief of Staff for SAPD Chief William McManus. In this docuseries, which premiered today on Peacock, Salame tells us that Johnson admitted to him that she killed her son. Salame did the interview without permission while Johnson was in the mental health unit in a Phoenix jail.

If you have any information on this case you can call SAPD or Project Absentis.

The family also has a Facebook account called Bring Home Gabriel Johnson.

It's been 14 years since 'Baby Gabriel' disappeared around Christmas - and his family still don't know if he was murdered or adopted.

The seven-month-old infant was last seen on December 26, 2009, with his mum, Elizabeth Johnson, in San Antonio, Texas. A few days later, she alleged to Gabriel's dad, Logan McQueary, that she'd killed their son and dumped his body. She then retracted her confession and claimed she'd given the boy up for adoption to an anonymous couple.

A three-part docuseries titled Where Is Baby Gabriel? airs on repeat on Channel 4 tonight, exploring the sudden disappearance of the youngster and the mystery surrounding his cold case. The series speaks to journalists, family members, the FBI and the lead detective on the case to try and solve the ongoing investigation to find Gabriel.

Thomas Lader, director of the docuseries, believes Gabriel could be alive and potentially identified one day. He told PrimeTimer: "I feel like there's potentially credible information, credible evidence, that Gabriel is out there." But what happened to him? Here, we take a look at everything Ms Johnson has said and where she is now.

The last time Logan saw his son, he was eight months old. In 2010, he said: "I gave him a kiss and put him in his bed and that was the last time I saw him." At the time, parents Logan and Ms Johnson were in a bitter custody battle over their child. When she lost custody of Gabriel, after failing to show up for a hearing, she fled Arizona with him.

Ms Johnson allegedly text Logan to say he would never see his son again, with the words: "I killed him", he claimed. In a recorded phone call, she said she had killed Gabriel and put him in a 'trash can'. Police searched bins across San Antonio, while Ms Johnson travelled to Miami, Florida, where she was arrested.

When confronted by detectives, she said that she had lied about murdering Gabriel. "[Logan] had ruined my life and he hurt me and I wanted to hurt him," she said in 2010. "And that was the only thing I could say that would hurt him." She claimed she had arranged for a young Caucasian couple to adopt Gabriel.

"I made a hasty decision and I thought it was OK," she said in an interview. "They approached me. I was out alone with the baby at the park. I trusted them, I believe in my heart they are good people." To this day, Gabriel has not been found and it is unknown whether he is still alive. Several people were charged in connection with his disappearance.

Ms Johnson was charged with kidnapping, custodial interference, conspiracy to commit custodial interference and child abuse - the latter was later dismissed. In 2012, she was convicted of custodial interference charges and sentenced to five years and three months behind bars.

And at her sentencing, she apologised for taking Gabriel away but denied that she murdered him. "I have to live every day without my son and without knowing where he is," she said. "That is the worst pain and punishment I could ever have." After a year and a half in jail, she was released early due to good behaviour.

Nearly two years later, she was sent back to jail for violating her probation, including associating with someone with a criminal record, failing to report a marriage from 2015, and not seeking permission from authorities to travel. She did a short stint in jail and was freed again.

Then in 2021, it was reported Ms Johnson - who had legally changed her name to Elizabeth Martinez - was pregnant and gave birth to a daughter that same year. At the time, Gabriel's great aunt, Sandy Peters, told a US news publication: "It's frustrating to know that she does have this beautiful little girl that she's getting to be 'Mummy' to, and yet Logan isn't getting a chance to be 'Daddy' to Gabriel."

Last year, Gabriel's mother reportedly changed her name once again - this time, to Naomi Aragon - and cited 'stalker harassment' as the reason for the new moniker. Some speculated it was due to the docuseries that was due to be released. She was last sighted in New Mexico.

Released for good behavior. Didn't behave well and arrested again. And again released. Unacceptable.

I don't believe her park story. I do believe he MIGHT be alive. But she chose to go to prison the first time rather than give it up and you'd do that imo only if a) she killed him but LE getting told that would be worse charges for her or B) she's that vindictive that hurting her ex is more important. If he is alive she knows who he is with imo or he is not alive.

I don't buy she went to some park and some couple came up and said hey lady could we adopt your baby or take him? Oh sure, I mean you seem nice, look nice and all so why not she says to them? Uh huh. Not. Or did she leave a part out and had a for sale sign or free sign on her BABY? I'm being sarcastic but not totally on that one. Or did she meet them, they started chatting and she tells them her story and they're sympathetic and offer to take him? Also don't buy that one or any of these scenarios.

There is also a very real possibility she killed him. She said she killed him but later said it was a lie and she said it to HURT the ex in the way that would hurt the worst or some such BUT that statement is worrisome because the; way to hurt him even worse than claiming to and letting him believe it is REALLY doing it.

So I think there is a CHANCE he is alive but she knows more and who with and where, but also a good one that he is not but I do not believe she met some couple out of the blue and just gave them her child and they wanted a child AND doesn't have info on the couple.

I think she has the same personality as Casey Anthony, and so many others who don’t care about human life. Even their own children. I don’t understand how they can live with themselves, but they certainly do.

Gabriel is long gone, I’m afraid. This whole story is so tragic.
