20 Years Later, Loving Daughter Still Wonders About Her Missing Mother

Although African Americans make up just 13 percent of the U.S. population, we account for 33 percent of the missing in the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s database. Cases involving African Americans also tend to receive less media coverage than missing Whites, with missing men of color getting even less attention.

NewsOne has partnered with the Black and Missing Foundation and TV One to focus on the crisis of missing African Americans.

To be a part of the solution, NewsOne will profile a missing person weekly and provide tips about how to keep your loved ones safe and what to do if someone goes missing, while TV One‘s newest show, “Find Our Missing,” hosted by award-winning actress S. Epatha Merkerson, tells these stories in visual form.

It was 20 years ago today that Felicia Cochran asked her 10-year-old daughter, Brandi Nicole Martin, if she wanted to go to the beauty parlor with her.

Martin, now 30, said no. It was the last time she would see her mother alive.

Cochran was last seen leaving her mother’s house in a gray 1987 Nissan Sentra. Twelve hours later, her car was found burned and abandoned. Two decades later, Martin still thinks about that day.

“Had I known that would be the last time I would see you my answer would have been unquestionably “YES!” That beauty salon was the last place you were seen. Twenty years ago today, your mother had you declared legally missing. You were only 26 years old,” Martin wrote in a letter to her mother that she shared with NewsOne.

That was the day my world changed; life became a difficult place for me to navigate, unfamiliar. You were the love that was never and can ever be replaced.

Twenty years later, Cochran has a grandchild that she never got to meet. Martin still dreams of a mother and daughter relationship that ended way too early.

I wish I could ask you about your childhood, your college days, or what falling in love was like for you. I wish I could tell you thank you for the sacrifices you made for me and being a great example of what a Mother is, Martin wrote in the heartbreaking letter.

This is what it’s like for people whose loved ones go missing. Cochran’s case remains unsolved and questions remain unanswered.

I may not have you on this earth, but I know I have you watching over me and protecting me in a way you could not do on this earth, and for this, I am grateful. But it still does not stop me from wondering, What was your final day like? What were your last words and how were you taken from us? But more importantly where are your remains so that you can be properly laid to rest and there is finally closure and we are all finally at peace,” Martin wrote.

Read the profile of Felicia Cochran below and look at the full text of Martin’s touching letter to her mother. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like if someone you loved dearly vanished, this letter will help you understand. ——————————————————————

Mom,

I remember the last time I saw you, you asked if I wanted to go with you to the beauty salon. I said, No. Had I known that would be the last time I would see you, my answer would have been unquestionably YES! That beauty salon was the last place you were seen.

Twenty years ago today, your mother had you declared legally missing. You were only 26 years old. That was the day my world changed; life became a difficult place for me to navigate, unfamiliar. You were the love that was never and can ever be replaced. I miss that Tonya and I can’t have those mother-daughter moments with you: shopping, us crawling in your bed telling you our life’s problems and you telling us everything is going to be OK, or simply calling to say, “I love you,” or asking, “How was your day today.”

I wish I could ask you about your childhood, your college days, or what falling in love was like for you. I wish I could tell you thank you for the sacrifices you made for me and being a great example of what a Mother is.

I wish your only son, Quadarius, had a chance to get to know you and to experience your love and affection, which he desperately needs. Or my niece, your only grandchild, could meet you and see just how much she looks like you, and that your mother could stay in her role as a Grandmother and not have to rear two of her three grandchildren.

I wish your mother could continue to watch you blossom into a woman coming into your own, nurturing your children and following your dreams.

I wish my uncle could continue the bond that he once shared with you, but now shares with me. I am sure you are looking down and can see that your brother takes very good care of your girl, as have all your brothers and sisters over the years. I may not have you on this earth, but I know I have you watching over me and protecting me in a way you could not do on this earth, and for this I am grateful. But it still does not stop me from wondering.

What was your final day like? What were your last words and how were you taken from us? But more importantly, where are your remains so that you can be properly laid to rest and there is finally closure and we are all finally at peace. Regardless if that day ever comes, you will ALWAYS be at the forefront of my mind and deeply rooted in my heart and I will live each and every day in an attempt to make you more proud of me than you were the day before. I love you and look forward to the day we are in each other’s presence again.

Love, Your Daughter,
Brandi Nicole Martin (Pictured above)

A letter written by Felicia's daughter was posted on the Black and Missing Facebook page October 2nd.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH SPOTLIGHT: FELICIA COCHRAN, AL (Missing since 06/11/1992).

Letter from Daughter: Brandi Martin

I was once asked to describe my favorite memory of my mother. I had to take a second to think about it. The memories that are so vivid in my mind of my mother are most likely not ones she would want me remembering her by. I have memories of being awakened at night, by sounds of insecurity thrashing fear. Instead of dialing 9-1-1, I dialed his parents. Memories of her crying and praying at night, when she thought her children were asleep, about how she wanted out and how she wanted God to make a way. And after some time, she finally gained enough courage and strength to leave. She finally had enough, but he hadn’t. He began to stalk and tap phone lines so he could know her every move. I remember my mother driving with her three children in tow, and being followed by her then estranged husband. Because she would not stop to talk to him, he ran into us. These events are what I feel and whole-heartedly believe led to her disappearance.

Domestic violence is one of the precursors to missing loved ones. I believe if we would take a look into the lives of the missing men, women and children today, domestic violence would be a common theme between many of them. There is not a day that goes by that I wished instead of dialing that man’s parents; I had dialed the police instead, creating records of his abuse. Or, when he began stalking her at work or home, she would have reported it. Maybe, that would have made a difference in the outcome of her story. Maybe we would have been granted more time to create even more memories, better memories.

I do not declare to be an expert on domestic violence. Nor do I dare tell women how to live their lives! But I do want to encourage women who are going thru an abusive situation, whether physical or verbal, to get out. If it is physical abuse, REPORT IT! If you have children, think about the lasting impressions and memories that you are leaving them with. Remember your life choices affect your children.

June 11 marks 20 years since Pell City woman's disappearance

CHRIS NORWOOD Jun 2, 2012

On June 11, it will be 20 years since any of her family members last saw Felicia Cochran.

Cochran, of Pell City, was last seen June 11, 1992, when she was 26 years old. She was last seen leaving her mother’s house at about 6 p.m. driving a gray, 1987 Nissan Maxima. She may have been going to Birmingham.

According to the Alabama Department of Public Safety, her car was discovered abandoned and burned in Talladega County less than 12 hours after her disappearance. She has not been seen or heard from since.

Cochran is described as a 5 foot, 3 inch tall black female. At the time of her disappearance, she weighed 135 pounds and had black hair and brown eyes. She had pierced ears and wore eyeglasses, according to the website. If she is still living, she would now be 46 years old.

“Cochran was estranged from her husband at the time of her disappearance,” the site says. “She has three children. Her case remains unsolved.”

Brandy Martin, Felicia’s sister, says that she has been staying in touch with Det. James Jones. “He says they’re still working the case, but nothing is really progressing,” she said. “They found a body in Virginia and had us give DNA samples, but they ruled her out,” she said.

According to Pell City police, there is a $10,000 reward for information leading to information resolving the case.

Anyone with information on Cochran should contact the Pell City Police Department at 205-884-3333.

Brandi Martin left the depot in July to join the Army Materiel Command Fellows Program.
ANNISTON ARMY DEPOT, Ala.-As a student worker here in the summer of 2002, Brandi Martin knew that she wanted to work for the government. "I saw that the opportunities were endless," she said.

Martin worked at Anniston Army Depot for seven years and has continued to take advantage of those opportunities by entering Army Materiel Command's Fellows Program.

The Pell City native worked as an information technology specialist at Anniston Army Depot from 2004 until she entered the Fellows Program in July. From 2002 to 2004, she was a student trainee here in the Directorate of Information Management.

AMC's Fellows Program is a five-year program for civilians. The first 13 months of the program include course work conducted at AMC's Logistics Leadership Center in Texarkana, Texas, and at Texas A&M University -Texarkana resulting in a master's degree in business administration.

Martin received a Master of Public Administration in emergency management in 2008 from Jacksonville State University, and this program will allow her to receive another master's degree. Her bachelor's degree is from Talladega College.

"I'm always looking at ways to achieve high goals," she said. "I'm setting my sights on training and the requirements for jobs like those within the Senior Executive Service."

It was the training, network opportunities and growth potential that attracted Martin to the Fellows Program. And, she likes to travel.

Once Fellows participants have completed their graduate degree, they begin a series of rotational, on-the-job training assignments for four years at different AMC sites.

"I enjoy learning about different people, places and culture," she added.

As for what Martin will be learning on the job, "I've not decided, probably contracting," she said. She'll have the opportunity to work in two career fields.

At the end of the four-year OJT period, Martin will be placed where AMC has a job opening.
AMC is headquartered in Fort Belvoir, Va., and is located in 149 locations worldwide, including more than 30 states and 50 countries.
