Toddler Girl Still Missing After Dad Is Found Alive in Pickup Truck Submerged in River: Police

Indiana authorities are searching for a missing 2-year-old girl who remains unaccounted for after her father was reportedly found on Friday in a truck submerged in a river.

Father and daughter Jeremy and Emma Sweet were last seen on Wednesday. Two days later, duck hunters found Jeremy Sweet in a pickup truck submerged in the White River, near the end of a farm lane in Bartholomew County, according to the Indianapolis Star.

The father, who was hospitalized for hypothermia, reportedly told detectives that his daughter was with him. However, investigators do not know if she was in the truck with her father when duck hunters discovered the vehicle.

At the time of his disappearance, Jeremy Sweet was out on bond for unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon and possession of methamphetamine, WISH reported, citing police.

Jeremy and Emma Sweet were reported missing on Thursday. According to WISH, divers on Friday suspended their search for the missing toddler.

The single occupant, Jeremy Sweet, was found inside the truck and was taken by EMS to Columbus Regional Hospital, where he was treated for exposure of hypothermia, Bartholomew County Sheriff Matt Myers said in a Facebook post.

It was revealed to investigators that Sweet had his 2-year-old daughter, Emma Sweet, with him prior to the incident.

BSCO deputies and other departments involved in the search recovered Jeremy Sweet’s truck on Saturday around 10:30 a.m.

Upon recovery, officials confirmed they did not find Emma in or underneath the vehicle, but did recover what they believe to be was her coat that she was last seen wearing.

Body of missing 2-year-old girl Emma Sweet recovered from Southern Indiana river

UPDATE: Emma Sweet's remains were recovered Sunday about 3 miles downstream from the site where her father's truck was found submerged, Bartholomew County Sheriff Matt Myers said.

Her cause of death is under investigation, according to Myers.

"Jeremy (Sweet) is currently being held on a 72-hour hold without bond while the investigation continues," his statement said.

According to Bartholomew County Sheriff Matt Myers, Sweet provided investigators with two different stories early on, including one that indicated Emma was with him when his truck went into the river. On Saturday, investigators said he provided an additional story, which also indicated both of them were in the water.

“When we first made contact with him yesterday morning it was that he had dropped Emma off at Casey’s. Right after that he says she was on the hood of the car of his vehicle her coat was wet, so he took the coat off and that’s where she got swept away,” Sheriff Matt Myers said Saturday afternoon. “There is really three stories now and none of them match.”

Loved ones reflect on life of Indiana toddler found dead in river: 'She could light up a room'

Just like Emma Sweet's last name, Jenna Edwards will remember the 2-year-old from southern Indiana as a sweet little girl.

"She had tons of personality, tons of sass, I mean she was just perfect," Edwards said. "She is stunningly beautiful; she could light up a room in two seconds."

At just 2 years old, Emma is leaving a legacy through her pageant wins across the nation and in her hometown.

"I love strong-willed girls and that girl was strong-willed; she was going to rule the world someday," she said.

While looking at Emma's future possibilities, Edwards also recounts the past. She says what she'll miss most is Little Miss Emma, as she calls her, singing the nursery rhyme "Old McDonald."

"The last song that she would sing over and over was… 'ee-i-ee-i-o,'" she said.

Emma's funeral services will be held Saturday in Columbus, Indiana.

Report: Missing girl died of hypothermia, asphyxia due to drowning

A 2-year-old girl who died in East Fork White River was the victim of a homicide, according to a report from The Republic newspaper.

The newspaper says that the death certificate for Emma Sweet, filed with the state, lists her cause of death as complications of hypothermia and asphyxia due to drowning, and the manner of her death as a homicide.

Sweet is facing charges of neglect of a dependent resulting in death. He was slated for a court appearance yesterday, but his cell block was locked down due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the jail, according to the newspaper.

New pre-trial, trial dates set for Jeremy Sweet in neglect of a dependent case

New pretrial and trial dates have been set for the Bartholomew County man accused of neglect of a dependent leading to the death of his 2-year-old daughter in a frigid river nearly one year ago.

At a change of plea hearing Monday in the case of Jeremy Sweet, 40, his defense attorney, Andy Maternowski, moved for a resetting of dates because he told Bartholomew Superior 1 Judge James Worton the prosecution and defense were “still working through discovery.” Prosecutors offered no objection, and Worton reset Sweet’s next pretrial conference for March 13 at 9 a.m. and his jury trial for April 11.

Sweet is accused of intentionally placing his daughter, Emma, in a situation that endangered her life and health and resulted in her death, according to court documents.

Sweet faces a Level 1 felony charge of neglect of a dependent resulting in death and a Level 6 felony charge of possession of a hypodermic syringe. He remains held in the Bartholomew County Jail on $1.2 million bond.

Court dates reset for Jeremy Sweet, accused of neglect of a dependent causing death involving his 2-year-old daughter

Another continuance was granted in the case of a local man accused of Level 1 felony neglect of a dependent resulting in the death of his 2-year-old daughter during Thanksgiving weekend in 2021.

About 10 people sat together in Bartholomew Superior Court 1 Monday behind Bartholomew County Prosecutor Lindsey Holden-Kay during what was scheduled to be a change of plea hearing.

However, defense attorney Andrew C. Maternowski asked that the matter be postponed for the fourth time. Maternowski was retained by Sweet last May, replacing public defender Aaron Edwards.

He told the judge the case is still active in the discovery phase. Besides the state and defense exchanging information, discovery might mean interviewing witnesses, gathering physical evidence, examining computer files, speaking with expert witnesses, reviewing police reports and going over witness statements.

After Holden-Kay did not object, Judge James Worton scheduled a new change of plea hearing for June 26 at 10:30 a.m., a final pre-trial conference on July 10 at 11 a.m., and a tentative jury trial to begin at 8:30 a.m. on July 18.

Sweet’s plea change hearing continued

The man accused of neglect resulting in the death of his 2-year-old daughter during Thanksgiving weekend in 2021 was granted a fifth continuance of a change of plea hearing that had been scheduled for Monday.

Sweet, who is being held in lieu of $1.2 million bond in the Bartholomew County Jail, was not transported from the jail for his scheduled hearing on Monday in Bartholomew Superior Court 1. He now has a change of plea hearing scheduled for 10 a.m. Oct. 9, a pretrial hearing set for 11 a.m. Oct. 23, and a jury trial now set for 8:30 a.m. Oct. 31.
