Northfield PD continues search for 6-year-old girl after mother found dead

The Northfield Police Department is asking for the public's help finding a six-year-old girl after her mother was found dead in their home this weekend.

Police said they responded to a call around 11:50 a.m. Saturday at a residence in the 600 block of Maple Brook Ct and discovered Lisa Wade, 39, who died of an apparent suicide. Authorities believe Wade may have been involved in the disappearance of her 6-year-old daughter Elle Ragin before she took her own life.

Witnesses at the scene told FOX 9 there was a large group of people searching cornfields by the townhouses and flying drones overhead yesterday. Agents from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension were seen going in and out of the home Sunday morning. Sunday, the state police helicopter was also seen searching the area. Police say they have also used K-9 teams to search for Elle.

As of Sunday afternoon, Elle remains unaccounted for. Police are now asking for anyone who has seen or spoken with Elle or Lisa in the past two weeks to call the police department at (507) 645-4477. Police say two weeks ago was the last confirmed sighting of the mother.

Minnesota State Rep. Ruth Richardson has been highlighting a growing problem that's going on not only in her state, but across the country.

The Democratic state legislator has consistently highlighted that even though Black girls and women represent less than 15% of the U.S. population, they made up more than one-third of all missing person cases in 2020. She noted that missing Black girls are less likely to receive Amber Alerts or media attention.

In January, Richardson introduced a bill to establish the nation's first Office of Missing and Murdered Black Women and Girls designed to offer assistance, including providing grants and establishing prevention programs for issues like domestic violence and human trafficking.

<snip>
GMA 3: When I was just telling you during the break, I've worked in some newsrooms where I've seen the differences in the coverage over the years. This task force was established back in 2020. What have you found so far?

RICHARDSON: Well, the task force has highlighted a number of things that we already know intuitively. We can point to cases where we see Black women and girls not getting as much media attention. When you hear the names like Gabby Petito…those are names that are like household names in many ways. But if you hear the name Elle Ragin, a young girl who's been missing in Minnesota since last summer, those are names that people don't know. And so there's a real opportunity here to ensure that we are elevating the stories of missing Black women and girls in the same way that we do for other communities.

They need to stop saying this s**t. Orrin and Orson, I can name several cases. It just causes resentment. Do I think there were other are now cases?. Yes. When it happens, It is absolutely wrong. But looking at it neutrally, There are ALOT of white kids that were just shrugged off as run aways, When family, Even certain odd things were speaking for them. That was not the case. The last 3 boys that were 12-14 were black boys or mixed and were given the proper attention.

IMO. Now a situation is created alot of times saying it's race when it's not the case. This country is more divided than ever. I've even heard some of my godkids say ....."White people". They tell me it doesn't apply to me. But technically it does. And it's a stereotype. If the tables were turned in situations. The white person would be labeled a racist. It's kind of difficult for me to be racist again black people. That would be interesting. I am in the middle, And observe everything.

It is the mainstream media that causes this perception and picks and chooses the few cases they cover. Orrin and Orson went wild on YT, with regular people and channels caring. However, it also went out of control with irresponsible ones BUT that brought attention from mainstream news and shows because people were interested and the stupid MSM stuck on mostly all politics doesn't cover sh*t. Summer Wells, from a poor family, also went wild. Black and white. Etc. Etc. It is alternative news sources that are bringing cold cases, unfair cases and more to light thanks to families who can now turn to such to get the word out, and social media. It is both good and bad but can bring attention.

MSM is trying to learn from these places and getting their news to report from some average people sadly.

Some are savvier and are catching on to knowing they need to have YT coverage and more, Twitter, etc.

MSM doesn't cover sh*t with crimes and missing children and more. They may cover one for a split instant, after that it depends on a lot and it is forgotten.

PEOPLE are showing it doesn't matter, black or white, etc. MSM has always been biased and run by those that are and that's where people get the idea a blonde like Natalee Holloway or Madeline McCain or Jon Benet get coverage but it is more than that, the cases are sensational with other factors.

Jmo. I don't care what race or age a child is and I don't think most PEOPLE do. Mainstream media is another story.

Apparently they're (media) using the date she was "recognized" to be missing / reported missing as the day she actually disappeared...

Even better if they highlighted her on both day's anniversary.

When this happened and even now there is NO awareness of this case or this child in MN by anyone I know. It didn't make much news or for long when it happened even. If LE is making any efforts on it, one would never know. News is nil. I guess on this year's awareness now a couple report. There is no push for tips or anything that is out there where anyone would know or see or even have heard of it mentioned in the year since.

Northfield's Elle Ragin is still missing: Her best friend tells her story

Nine-year-old Sophie Hanson-Mattson said it was a friendship formed almost at first sight.

"I was getting onto the bus and I didn’t really know where to sit because it was assigned seats," Sophie said. "I was walking up a little and then Elle called me over to sit by her on the bus."

If you wanted to know what Elle Ragin meant to 9-year-old Sophie, one picture - taken during a class trip - tells the whole story.

"Sophie and Elle were holding hands as they were exploring the woods and playing in the creek," said Pam Hanson, Sophie's mom.

"She was really nice and she just would help anyone that needed help," Sophie said. "Like one time, I tripped and I scraped myself and she just wanted to come and help me."

Now a year later, Pam and many in the community are forced to face the possibility of the worst outcome.

"[Sophie] did come home recently and said that the kids were talking that Elle is on a trip or a vacation, or off somewhere," Pam said. "They did tell us at the school that we should tell the kids that Elle is not coming back because it’s harder to keep things open-ended for them than it is to just say she’s not coming back."

She says the lack of any breakthroughs has been hard to process.

"It’s very surprising to me that nobody has seen any evidence of anything," Pam said. "Nobody has information. Nobody knows. I mean, there are theories out there, but the reality is, we just don’t know."

One thing Sophie does know - she wants her friend to come back.
