Amber Alert issued for 2-year-old Tacoma, WA girl, police say

The incident happened Saturday at about 9:10 a.m. near the Wendy's at 4112 South Steele Street.

Police identified the missing girl as Delilah Everett who is described to be 3 feet tall, weighs 23 pounds, and has brown curly hair and brown eyes. At the time of her disappearance, Delilah was wearing a white and yellow floral long-sleeve pajama set and white socks.

According to police, the girl was seen walking in the street, when a stranger picked her up, placed her in a car and drove away, heading towards 38th Street.

In pajamas and walking in the street? Well that's being 9watched by whoever had her with them to begin with. Not.

I'm sure the perp probably did not have good intents or he would have taken her to a PD. I would have detained a 2 year old in the street at least, tried to get others and call 911. NO 2 year old should be alone in the streets EVER. Assuming the early reporting is all true. People who see that and even pass a child of what age should never not do anything, they at least should call LE at minimum.

Odd one so far. Glad she is safe. IF with someone who even watches out for her.

Police said the girl had wandered out of her home and into the area of a local Wendy's, where the suspect found her. He went into the restaurant and asked if her parents were inside, and when told no, he took the girl and drove off with her.

Police stated they found her in the suspect's home, and said the suspect is currently being investigated and could face kidnapping charges.

I would never not save an unsafe two year old. Interesting he went in and asked if the parents were there. Taking one home though is a different story than ensuring they were safe unless maybe you knew or were trying to save parents from neglect charges or CPS involvement and knew them. More to come I'm sure.

A two to four year old on a street alone in pjs no one should EVER ignore imo. Even five maybe, not these days. But stay public, stop the child, call LE. Get anyone willing to help with the situation. You don't kidnap or take home. At best take her to a PD and you are still at risk taking her or him. You do NOT go home with the child.

Not sure, but I suspect there is more to this.

Kind of odd he went in and asked at the restaurant.

Sounds like I was saying, however, why did he not call LE and took her home instead....

Not real sure what dad means that she is advanced for her age either. Whether she is or not, she was an unwatched two year old taken. Who was taking care of her?

As I said I would not leave a two year old on a street. Apparently when he asked in the restaurant, no parents seemed to be around.

There is still more. Guessing there must be.

Tacoma police release details on how toddler subject to AMBER Alert was found
Here’s how police found the toddler, according to the news release:

9:30 a.m: A call came in from a mother who said her child was missing from a residence in the 4200 block of South Prospect Street. An employee at a nearby business called to report that a man recently entered the business, saying he found the child alone outside and was looking for her parents. When the employee told him that police would be called to help, the man left with the child in his silver sedan.

Police began searching for the child and the man based on surveillance footage from the business. Officers checked nearby police stations and the Tacoma Mall, contacted local hospitals and Tacoma Fire stations and ran searches through Flock Safety systems and Automated License Plate Reader technology for the man’s vehicle. The search was unsuccessful.

9:52 a.m.: Suspecting a child abduction, the police patrol shift commander activated the department’s Child Abduction Response Team (CART), which includes criminal investigators and personnel from various agencies trained to “quickly and effectively recover a child who has been abducted, or who is missing under suspicious circumstances by utilizing a team of trained personnel.”

10:30 a.m.: CART members began arriving on scene and were briefed on the situation as patrol officers continued the search.

11:42 a.m.: In the absence of new information about the child’s location or why she was taken, the Washington State Patrol issued an AMBER Alert across the state notifying the public of the missing child. The alert said the girl was last seen walking on South Steele Street before a man drove away with her toward 38th Street, The News Tribune reported. “Within minutes, dozens of calls came in from community members,” the news release said.

11:50 a.m.: A caller provided authorities with “key identifying information” about the man seen with the missing child.

12:06 p.m.: Based on the caller’s information, police located the man’s address, where they found the missing child. Police took the man into custody and interviewed him at police headquarters. Police also interviewed the man’s friends and family.

Police booked the man into the Pierce County Jail on an outstanding warrant and forwarded their investigation to prosecutors for a charging decision. The investigation is still active, and police might share further updates after a charging decision.

Tacoma father defends parental care after toddler's brief disappearance

For the first time, we heard from the Tacoma father whose two-year-old daughter was reportedly abducted over the weekend.

Thanks to a swift Amber Alert, she was found safe and brought back home in less than an hour.

“It could've been a lot worse, and it wasn't and I'm thankful," Jayda Everett said.

It all started Saturday morning when he got home from an overnight shift at work. His wife went out to a store. He said as he was napping, Delilah unlocked the front door, descended three flights of stairs and walked over to Wendy’s, which is right next door. When his wife got home, she woke him up and that's when they contacted police, eventually triggering an Amber Alert.

KING 5 asked Everett if he believed he was a negligent parent, after many on social media criticized his parenting.

"Absolutely not,” Everett said. “I take very good care of my daughter. “I love my daughter. She means everything to me.”

Police said the man who found Delilah allegedly asked employees at the Wendy’s if they knew where the toddler's parents were before putting her in his car and driving off. KING 5 is not identifying the man because he has not been formally charged. Within an hour after the Amber Alert was pushed out, police said a tip led them straight to the man's Pierce County home, where they found Delilah.

"They asked me if they want to have him charged,” Everett said. “There's no need to have him charged. He saved my daughter. Anything else that's going on in his life, let that be what's going on in his life."

The man was taken into custody and was interviewed by police. He was booked into Pierce County Jail on an outstanding warrant. Officials with the Pierce County Prosecutor's Office said he has a pretrial hearing June 26 for the warrant. He was released Saturday night from jail.

"We also helped him pay his bail,” Everett said. “For the whole situation, we were trying to make sure that he gets the good light that he is. That he's not painted as a criminal."

However, the investigation into what police are calling a kidnapping has been forwarded to the Pierce County Prosecutors' Office for a charging decision.

"I'm still glad at the end of the day that he nurtured and take care of my daughter,” Everett said. “She was sheltered and not kidnapped."

Tacoma police told KING 5 there are no charges filed against the parents.

Boy I don't know. How could they POSSIBLY know the man had good intentions, unless maybe they knew him and he knew them and he knew them, did not want to call LE to save them from neglect charges or something. That is the only thing I can think of and I've said it before I think.

I guess if he had a former warrant that could be a reason.

Yet he had a warrant and the parents paid his bond too. Seems way too trusting to me.

What was the guy going to do from there had they not found him??

She is TWO. Now if she's to the three side, that's a big difference in those early years. To do flights of stairs, unlock doors, all of it. Certainly some may be a bit ahead of others.

So mom left while dad sne she were sleeping or was just he, or did he drift off after that? If three flights of stairs, I'd like to know if he was even on the same level as her.

I'm happy she is alive and safe, I'd hope untouched, but I don't know about any of these people in this case.

He took a huge risk taking her home and he already had issues and was in trouble. Get another person around to help or take her in the Wendy's and tell them you can't stay and someone just needs to it they keep an eye on her and to call LE. It just isn't sitting right with me. I mean he COULD have meant well but how you'd ever prove that I'm not so sure.

I'm female and I'd be worried about proving my intent if I took a child home, and if male they should be even more so.

If dad works third shift, and can't stay awake to sleep while mom leaves, maybe they either need to get a sitter or mom needs to take the child with her. I did it years ago when my kids were young and when you need to sleep is when they are up. I tried for like a day or two and hired a sitter. No way was I taking chances. I couldn't do it.

Anyhow, who knows what more we will hear and I am glad she is supposedly safe but I am certainly not sure about it all. Cops moved quick, I will say that.

No charges filed in Tacoma Amber Alert case as father thanks suspect

The Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office will not file charges against a man who allegedly triggered an Amber Alert last month after taking a 2-year-old girl from outside a Wendy’s in Tacoma.

The child was found unharmed, and police said the man attempted to find her parents on the day of the incident. The girl's father expressed appreciation for the man’s actions, telling KING 5 that "he saved my daughter. Anything else that's going on in his life, let that be what's going on in his life."

“We encourage people who find an unattended child to call the police rather than leave with the child,” the prosecutor’s office said in a news release.
