FBI tries to help identify who killed Debbie Collier of Athens

The FBI has joined the investigation into the mysterious slaying of an Athens woman whose burned and nearly nude body was found a month ago in a mountain ravine of northeast Georgia.

Habersham County Sheriff’s investigators said the investigation is “very complex in nature” as they do not have suspects or a motive in the death of 59-year-old Debbie Collier, whose body was found Sept. 11.

Collier was reported missing on Sept. 10 by her husband Steve Collier and her daughter, Amanda Bearden. An Athens-Clarke police officer met with them at the Collier home on Rocky Drive in north Athens near Sandy Creek Park.

The body was found the next day after investigators tracked her rented Chrysler van to a location just outside the city of Tallulah Falls in Habersham County by use of a satellite tracking service. The body was found in the woods, along with some items she had earlier purchased at a Family Dollar store in Clayton.

Athens-Clarke police reports show the daughter told an officer that her mother sent her $2,285 through Venmo, an online money-sharing service. She also sent an ominous message saying in part that “they are not going to let me go.”

Investigators believe the act of killing Collier was “deliberate and personal,” Kogod said at a new conference on Sept. 30.

I'm going to have to beg to differ on this one. I was just at the DMV. For a DL. I was actually surprised she didn't want me to surrender the one I had. Also I was surprised the new hard copy would be mailed. She gave me the paper printed showing the new one was valid and she also told me my old one could also be used until my birthday which I have not had yet. So both are good. And since one is unrestricted with glasses and the other one not, I am glad to use the old one until I have to wear lenses.

I will say I was surprised but I was told this. Both are valid. Only until the old one expires. It of course may not be the same in every state and if there is one thing that isn't it is state DMV rules and DLs etc.
I noticed the paper temp license and mail the hard copy after 'real id' came about. Not sure if that is the exact timing though. I do know it's because of more secure printing processes that the DMVs just can't produce on demand and probably for more secure logging for systems like E-verify and the like. There was too much fake id production ability the other way. It still happens, but it's harder to produce a realistic id compared to the new ones is what we were explained by our DMV when we had to renew. As long as I have one that is valid is all I cared. I know my luck that I would get stopped for some reason as soon as mine wasn't.

The new one is pretty fancy compared to the old one and they can't probably just print them on site any longer. That was soooo handy though. Even if needing a replacement. It all seems more secure but it won't stop people from using someone else's which is probably the biggest form of abuse.

So anyhow there is the possibility Debbie had two kicking around or just renewed but I believe it more likely someone planted things after her death. Or for some reason she just took off without it. Maybe grabbed a different person and was thinking need a debit card and my keys and just spaced it. But planting is far more likely. Imo.

I have forgotten mine on occasion, too, but it is with my forms of payment so I wouldn't have been able to get very much at any store as I hardly ever have much cash - if any. It's the form of payment I am most intrigued by. If it was used at the store and was back at her house but that purse she was seen with was absent

Has it been mentioned if she paid by cash or by card? I can't remember if I am just assuming she had a card or if it has actually been mentioned. I still think they mentioned that info about her DL and CCs and the video for a very specific purpose

I am pretty sure the card can be seen in the security video. She goes for her purse but then changes to her pocket and pulls a card out.

I almost never have cash on me either. In fact the rare time I need even a spare $1 I don't have one.

I was just thinking how archaic checks have become. I ordered some the other day. It is so rare I need one but when one does, one does. It isn't often but I do run into where I need an actual check once in a blue moon.

“I have a lot of concerns about if that was my mom in that actual video because that doesn’t actually appear of like her posture,” he explained.
I saw he has doubts about that. Imo it would be pretty far fetched and an overplanned crime for it NOT to be her. It is her vehicle. It is her debit card I imagine unless the cops are totally incompetent and made sure of neither. So then what, someone dressed like her but then put the jersey and clothes back on a dead Debbie Collier? Because remnants of the jersey were found at the scene and I would imagine if the shoes, short and visor weren't on Debbie, the cops would know if she was dressed differently than the woman at the store? It doesn't make much sense that it isn't her UNLESS they found her dressed differently and without that debit/credit card, shoes, etc.

He also said she's never worn shorts in the last five years. I feel for the son but have to wonder how often he saw her? And saw her in Georgia? Where it is hotter.

There are people that would say I never wear shorts, too, but I most definitely do, just not at work, etc. Out doing running around would depend on if I was doing my errands before or after work or on my days off or after I came home. My neighbors would say I always wear shorts.

I agree. And people change too. My dad would never have worn blue jeans for the good first half of his life. My mom finally got him into a pair and eventually it was all he wore. Same with tennis shoes back in the day. Never did I see him in sandals or shorts though. Never did he do that no matter how hot.

Kids are often surprised too to find their parents do have lives aside sometimes from how they always see them. My in laws were shocked by a pic they saw of their dad after he died as they never saw him in that type of relaxation or dress mode let's say but clearly when he was younger and before kids he had a different kind of life. They thought of him as always proper I guess and buttoned up.

Autopsy for Georgia woman's 'suicide' reveals extensive injuries previously unmentioned

The burning death of Georgia's Debbie Collier was ruled a suicide late last year, months after police found her naked in the woods, fallen down an embankment and grasping at a tree with "charring" on her stomach – however, a newly revealed autopsy report found significantly more burns on her body.

Collier, a 59-year-old office manager from Athens, died from "inhalation of superheated gases and thermal injuries and hydrocodone intoxication," a source told Fox News Digital in November.

Although she had a prescription for the opioid painkiller, the hydrocodone levels in her system surpassed the expected amount roughly four times over, according to the source.

Collier was found dead and naked on Sept. 11 in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest south of Clayton, a 90-minute drive from her home in Athens. Her husband, Steven Collier, reported her missing around 6 p.m. the previous day. She was discovered a few feet downhill from the site of a small fire that burnt up many of her belongings, with soot in her nostrils.

Police found a gas cap nearby, scorched wood, burned personal items and the melted remnant of a plastic fuel jug.

An autopsy report obtained Monday by the New York Post reveals that the "charring" to her stomach was not a full description of the burns she'd suffered. She had "second- and third-degree burns involving 80% of the total body surface area," leaving her with "charred leathery skin."

"Autopsy examination revealed thermal injuries of the external body surface and of the traceal mucosa (windpipe), no deposited soot in the airway, and no significant elevation of blood carboxyhemoglobin," the Post quoted in an excerpt of the report.

She had "no other significant injuries" and the authors theorized the burns may have come from a "sudden, intense ‘flash’ fire."

In support of investigators' suicide declaration, the autopsy reportedly only mentioned, "Investigation by law enforcement revealed circumstances consistent with a self-intentioned act and that she was alone at the time of the incident."

Law enforcement sources told Fox News Digital the conclusion was drawn from the toxicology report, depression, and an unsent text message to her son reading "I love you."

It's odd that she crossed my mind more than once in reading about the Forsyth case with odd circumstances where it was first looked at as a homicide.

With regard to THIS case, they haven't explained nearly enough. Where did the fuel can come from? Did she keep one in her car? Did she stop for one and buy one? I think there was a gas station stop, did they see her filling the can rather than her car??? WHERE are these details? They say here she was alone and HOW do they know that? Maybe they have it right but they sure haven't explained it all NOR shared all.
