Search continues for missing girl in WA

The disappearance of a four-year-old girl from a WA campsite is "extremely concerning" and police say a search has yet to turn up any answers.

Cleo Smith was last seen about 1.30am on Saturday at the Blowholes campsite on the coast at Macleod, north of Carnarvon.

An air, land and sea search resumed on Sunday morning with help from the SES and community volunteers.

The girl was wearing a pink one-piece sleepsuit with a blue and yellow pattern when she was last seen.

Earlier, Ms Smith posted that she had woken at 6am on Saturday to find her daughter wasn't in their shared tent.

She described Cleo's disappearance as "very very unusual".

WA police Inspector Jon Munday said the family arrived in the area late on Friday afternoon.

Insp Munday said he was "fairly confident" police were able to get the identities of all the people who were in the campsite at the time she disappeared, as well as gathering intelligence from dashcams and CCTV cameras in the vicinity to "paint a picture of who was around here".

"We are greatly concerned for the safety of Cleo and we aren't leaving anything to chance or ruling anything out," Insp Munday said early on Sunday afternoon.

"We are going as hard as we can for as long as we can."

Insp Munday said detectives from Perth and Geraldton had arrived at the search area and despite the harsh environment, the weather was so far "conducive to someone surviving exposure to the elements", but there were still no answers or major breakthroughs in the search.

Nappies are diapers, right? Don't think she was wearing diapers at her age.
Her mother mentioned she needed her help to go to the bathroom getting pjs down, etc. I assumed she was potty trained.

However, this is a man and if he left her alone locked in a room or worked, maybe he purchased diapers because he left her for hours or because it was easier...

Probably not. But she was abducted by a stranger. That trauma may have regressed her a bit.

He'd already had her for 2 weeks when he was seen buying them. I don't think he just decided to buy some 2 weeks later on a whim (like he didn't know if she'd need them or not).

yep, but we also don't know that this was the first time he bought them. Also might need them at night at this age, especially if uprooted as she was.

From what they show of her in the pic, she looks unbruised and unharmed. I hope she isn't other than emotionally which is more than likely a give as she was likely in an unfamiliar place with a stranger and was locked in a room and not with her family. I'm hoping against hope that's the worst of it as I am sure we all are.

On rare occasion we hear of a woman taking a baby or a child for reasons other than the usual sick reasons other predators have. I rarely if ever have heard of a man taking them because he wanted a child, etc. I pray nothing more happened to her though. This has been a different case from the start so maybe that part will be too and not be the norm.

Still tickled this morning. It reminded me of the day the news broke that Jayme Closs was found. Such rare and sadly unexpected outcomes. One wasn't safe in her own home with her parents and the other was not safe in a tent with her parents.

Suspected Cleo Smith abductor taken to hospital for SECOND time

A 36-year-old Carnarvon man was taken into custody to be questioned over the suspected abduction but has not been charged.

Asked about reports the man was injured after banging his head against a wall in a holding cell Blanch said “there’s no serious injuries”.

“We’ve had to take him off to hospital again this morning, so that’s twice,” he told Sydney radio 2GB.

Blanch said it was important that before an interview takes place police are sure a person is of sound mind, healthy, fed, and has had sufficient rest.

“So we’ve got to make all the right accommodations for this person ... so we can make the right decisions going forward today.”

Police have already confirmed the man has no connection to Cleo’s family and was not at the house when Cleo was found.

The man was not on a list of known sex offenders in Carnarvon, a tourist gateway on WA’s northwest coast known for its banana plantations.

Cleo Smith suspect taken to hospital after self-harm incident in police holding cell

The man suspected of abducting four-year-old Cleo Smith self-harmed while in a police holding cell.

The 36-year-old, who was arrested near the Carnarvon house where Cleo was found yesterday, was taken to hospital “a couple of times” as a precautionary measure after an incident in his jail cell.

West Australian Police deputy commissioner Col Blanch told 2GB’s Ben Fordham on Thursday that the man, who had “no serious injuries”, had been taken to hospital again this morning.

Mr Blanch said police were obliged to “make all the right accommodations for this person” to ensure he was “of sound mind” before he was interviewed.

Earlier LE said they thought charges would likely come today when asked by a reporter. Not looking like it I guess based on the above injury, hospital, remarks, etc..

They may have someone with serious issues on their hands and then again it could be put on to avoid the trouble he is in or try to... We know so little that it's impossible to know. Harder to have an opinion yet on that than I would with say Lori Vallow or Letecia Stauch...

Did hear he was not on the offender list near the campground area, etc. that they somewhat cleared. Questions were hard to hear at times but I think they were asked about him having issues or being odd around children and having any previous record and that one they declined to answer.

LE also confirmed she was taken from the campground I heard them say.

Also heard them say they thought it was likely opportunistic rather than planned.

Rumor has it the name of the man is floating around already but I haven't seen it, anyone responsible is not naming him online or in media but I'm sure it is just a matter of time before someone does to get views or clicks (cynicism on my part but there is always someone it seems who will)...

These are some of the things I caught and hear today but had no link nor time to look for one but they did come out of the LE press conference as well played on someone's show.

Oh another thing i found a bit notable is they said he was not on their radar until yesterday as far as his name or having him as a suspect, etc. (paraphrasing)...

The best parts were further info on Cleo, reaction, the parents finding out, reuniting, etc.

My favorite was her reaction on reuniting and that instant what she did or said and the LE guy said she said "MUM!!!" Seeing her mother I'm sure. Lots of smiles from LE in talking about these things and finding her and reuniting them, etc...

LOVED that part... As did LE one could tell... Those questions they lit up and loved to talk about...

Cleo Smith's alleged kidnapper pulled over by police in the middle of the night before officers burst into Carnarvon home to rescue the four-year-old

New details have emerged as to how Cleo Smith's alleged kidnapper was caught by Western Australia Police moments before her rescue inside a Carnarvon home.

The 36-year-old man at the centre of the investigation that has gripped the nation was pulled over by a police car near Carnarvon around midnight, according to publication The West Australian.

He was arrested and less than one hour later, around 11:46am, a team of four leading investigators burst into the property, and found the four-year-old inside a locked room.

Name has been released in a few places.

Why Cleo Smith kidnapping suspect HASN'T been charged yet - and how long police have to make the decision Australia is sweating on

Police are facing a race against time to charge the man suspected of snatching little Cleo Smith and holding her prisoner at his home in Carnarvon for 18 days.

Terry Kelly, 36 was arrested in connection with the abduction of the four year old after she was grabbed from a tent while on holiday with her family 75km from home.

However, almost 36 hours later, Kelly has still not been charged over the incident.

The process has been delayed after Kelly was allegedly attacked by another prisoner inside a police holding cell within hours of his arrest.

Kelly was taken to hospital with head injuries and released after medical treatment.

Police are legally required to charge suspects within a 'reasonable time' of their arrest, allowing for medical treatment and the seriousness of the crime.

A senior officer can sign off the first 18 hours in custody but after that a magistrate must approve further extensions every eight hours.

Theoretically, it can be unlimited, but in practice a magistrate will end the process within a few days if charges are not laid - and the clock is now ticking for Kelly.

However it is understood the suspect could be charged with some minor offences later on Thursday to hold him in custody while the investigation continues.

'My son battered Cleo abduction suspect': Prisoner's mother tells how 'loner' Terry Kelly, 36, was 'given a real hiding' by her 'furious' son in police station cell when he found out he was accused of kidnapping Australian four-year-old

The suspected abductor of four-year-old Cleo Smith who sustained a heady injury in custody after his arrest was beaten 'black and blue' by another prisoner inside a police holding cell, the inmate's mother has claimed.

Terry Kelly, 36, was arrested by police over the disappearance of Cleo, dubbed 'Australia's Madeleine McCann', before officers rescued the little girl from a house in Carnarvon, Western Australia, 18 days after she went missing from a remote campsite.

The suspect had only been at Carnarvon police station for a few hours on Wednesday when he was allegedly set upon by a prisoner.

Today, the prisoner's mother said her 'furious' son 'blew up' and beat Kelly 'black and blue' when he discovered that he had been arrested over the four-year-old's abduction.

She said: 'As soon as he heard this bloke was arrested over that little Cleo, he blew up, beat him black and blue.

'I tell you what, he (Kelly) got a real hiding...my son had to be taken out in shackles, and he (Kelly) was taken for treatment...he was in a bad way. He is a big bloke but he really copped it'.

A spokesman for Western Australia Police said they would not be commenting on the woman's claims.

The suspect was not at the house when Cleo was found, officers added, but was arrested a 'short' distance away. Detective Wilde said he is not known to Cleo's family and is not a registered sex offender, but is 'known to police'. 'I have to be very careful about that,' he added.

Important to note that another man with the same name was wrongly accused and pictured by some media outlets.

Terrance Flowers calls himself Terry Kelly on social media - the same name shared by Cleo's suspected abductor. However, the wrong man was widely pictured and shamed on social media following the girl's rescue on Wednesday.

Australia 7 is lucky no one hunted down the wrong individual and harmed him. Seriously.

All so interesting but wow. Daily Mail too, very interesting, but they did already have something wrong in this case that caused issues that they published.

Doesn't stop me from reading it though because sometimes they do get things others don't that do end up accurate :)

I have to say I am a bit curious as to what they find about competency here... On the surface, he drives, has his own housing, car, shops, etc. Buys dolls, has income from somewhere, not sure about Australian ways could he be on the likes of welfare or disability or has it been said if he worked? Interesting that he threatened reporters, things like that almost for some reason lead me to believe a person is competenet and knew full well what he was doing and has all of his faculties...

The cops have pretty much said previously they think it a crime of opportunity, etc... This throws me a bit... This man at like 3 a.m. drove how far and back (probably) for what and what purpose...? Did he go looking for a child, any child out there? Or was he there watching and even camping himself but took off with her at 3...? Out there for just a day trip maybe...? Maybe he headed for the campgrounds intending to find and take a child/any child and take her home under cover of darkness but that is not entirely opportunistic...

This doll "fetish" makes one think driving with a doll as his passenger and taking selfies with dolls had him wanting a real live "doll" to drive with and take selfies with... Did he want a child and one he could let play with his "friends" and "dolls"... And who would be his "friend"...

It is fortunate she is alive most definitely but in some ways he creeps me out more than some in that this is really different... LE to me seem to still be dancing around or keeping information limited on much or skirting some things...

LE may not confirm the dolls but now that his name is out there, the digging begins and his social media would be where it starts... I almost expect his criminal record to be next but not sure about Australian law on openness of records, etc...
