Search continues for missing girl in WA

The disappearance of a four-year-old girl from a WA campsite is "extremely concerning" and police say a search has yet to turn up any answers.

Cleo Smith was last seen about 1.30am on Saturday at the Blowholes campsite on the coast at Macleod, north of Carnarvon.

An air, land and sea search resumed on Sunday morning with help from the SES and community volunteers.

The girl was wearing a pink one-piece sleepsuit with a blue and yellow pattern when she was last seen.

Earlier, Ms Smith posted that she had woken at 6am on Saturday to find her daughter wasn't in their shared tent.

She described Cleo's disappearance as "very very unusual".

WA police Inspector Jon Munday said the family arrived in the area late on Friday afternoon.

Insp Munday said he was "fairly confident" police were able to get the identities of all the people who were in the campsite at the time she disappeared, as well as gathering intelligence from dashcams and CCTV cameras in the vicinity to "paint a picture of who was around here".

"We are greatly concerned for the safety of Cleo and we aren't leaving anything to chance or ruling anything out," Insp Munday said early on Sunday afternoon.

"We are going as hard as we can for as long as we can."

Insp Munday said detectives from Perth and Geraldton had arrived at the search area and despite the harsh environment, the weather was so far "conducive to someone surviving exposure to the elements", but there were still no answers or major breakthroughs in the search.

Search continues for Cleo Smith, 4, missing from family's tent at campsite north of Carnarvon

Emergency services are continuing to search for a four-year-old girl missing from a campsite in Western Australia's north-west since Saturday.

Cleo Smith was last seen at 1:30am on Saturday in her family's tent at the Blowholes Shacks campsite in Macleod.

Police said her family had realised she was missing when they woke at 6:00am.

The campsite is close to the blowholes at Point Quobba, about 75 kilometres north of Carnarvon by road and about 875 kilometres north of Perth.

Inspector Jon Munday said police had gathered a lot of information and were "not ruling anything out" at this stage.

"We're really throwing everything we can at this search in these initial stages," he said.

He said the family, who live in Carnarvon, had arrived at the blowholes on Friday for a weekend camping trip.

"The parents did have an interaction with Cleo in the early hours of the morning," he said.

‘Sleeping bag reported missing’: Police not ruling out abduction in search for missing Carnarvon girl

Police are treating the disappearance of a four-year-old Carnarvon girl who went missing in the early hours of Saturday morning from a remote campsite in Western Australia as a possible abduction.

Mid-West Gascoyne Inspector Jon Munday said a sleeping bag from the tent Cleo Smith was staying in with her family had been reported missing but he was not at liberty to divulge what other items police believed might also have disappeared.

“We’re not leaving anything to chance. We are trying to cover all of our bases and we’re not ruling anything out.

“We have our best investigators up here at the moment, we have a full team of detectives up from Perth who are being assisted by Carnarvon and Geraldton detectives, we also have forensic officers up from Perth.”

CCTV footage has been collected from nearby roadhouses and police are confident they are aware of any vehicles which would have been in the area since the young girl went missing.

The family – who had arrived on Friday for a weekend trip – sought help from other campers and immediately started searching for Cleo. By the time police arrived at the scene by mid-morning there were already motorbikes and personal drones combing the area.

"The parents did have an interaction with Cleo in the early hours of the morning," he said.

This stands out to me. Not sure what kind of remark that is other than a very vague cryptic remark...

I just took it as, no Cleo wasn't up until 1:30 am, but they did SEE her at that time. Maybe they had to get up and go to the bathroom and saw her. Maybe she woke them up to use the bathroom. Maybe she rolled over and said something at that time. Maybe the parents were crawling into the tent at that time. shrug Didn't seem to cryptic to me.

ETA: Of course, yes, they could be hinting at something. The one thing that comes to mind, especially with the missing sleeping bag, is perhaps a bed-wetting incident.

Could be any of the above. I take interaction I guess at the literal meaning of the word means which wouldn't be just seeing her.

The statement itself seemed to just stick out and be a bit out of place/incongruous. Likewise the remark about not being at liberty to say what other items might be missing (other than the sleeping bag) seems odd as well. To me anyhow. Jmo.

Homicide detectives join search for Cleo Smith at Blowholes in Gascoyne

A team of detectives joined the desperate search for a missing four-year-old girl yesterday as police revealed they hold “grave concerns” for her and are “not ruling anything out” — including a possible abduction.

Insp. Jon Munday said the circumstances of the case were “extremely concerning” and that the State’s “best investigators”, including detectives from Perth, had arrived to join the search. According to Nine News, the detectives are from the homicide squad.

“We are gravely concerned for the safety of Cleo,” Insp. Munday said.

“At this point in time, we don’t have any answers as to where Cleo is.

“We are trying to cover all our bases and we are not ruling anything out.”

It is understood the well-known local family are familiar with the area and often go there to camp.

Search for missing four-year-old girl enters third day

The search for a missing girl in the Gascoyne will enter its third day today, with police not ruling out the possibility that she was abducted.

Major development in hunt for missing Cleo as her biological father 'speaks with cops' during three hour police station visit

The biological father of missing four-year-old girl Cleo Smith has spent nearly three in a police station 1,000km from where she went missing after being asked to give a statement.

It's been three days since the child vanished from a remote campsite in Western Australia and so far there are no signs of what happened to the little girl, despite an exhaustive land, sea and air search.

Seven News reported that Daniel Staines was at work before he was asked to come into Mandurah Police Station, 1,000km south of where Cleo vanished, to give a statement.

He did so willingly with his parents by his side and there is no suggestion he has anything to do with his daughter's disappearance.

Dangerous cliffs, drop toilets and now ABDUCTION: Worrying theories emerge about what's happened to little Cleo, 4, as family insist she 'would not wander off' and her biological dad speaks to police

There are mounting concerns for little Cleo Smith's safety as the search for the missing four-year-old at a remote campground enters its fourth day, with close friends of the family warning 'she would not have wandered' off.

The four-year-old was last seen by her mother Ellie Smith in bright pink pyjamas about 1.30am on Saturday inside the family's shared tent at Blowholes campsite, north of Carnarvon, in Western Australia.

Ms Smith and her partner Jake Gliddon had an 'interaction' with the youngster in the middle of the night, but she was nowhere to be seen when they woke up at 6.30am and her grey and red sleeping bag was also missing.

Police refused to confirm reports a car was heard skidding off as it left the area around 3am on Saturday, after other campers reported the odd noise.

1. Swept out with the tide

One possibility is that little Cleo may have woken in the night and wandered toward the nearby ocean, only to have fallen off a dangerous cliff and been swept away by rising waters.

2. Fell down a hole-in-the-ground toilet

The grounds of the campsite and surrounds are flat and bare, making it easy for helicopters to scan the area from the skies above.

But locals and passersby who have visited Blowholes before say the site is littered with sheds and drop holes usually used as toilets.

There are fears Cleo may have wandered off in the dead of night, only to fall into one of the many holes nearby.

3. Abduction

The most widely accepted theory circulating online is that little Cleo was abducted.

Police say they have grave concerns for the child and that 'everything is on the table' in the unusual and disturbing case.

4. Mediums claim 'green rusty tin door' is involved

Several people claiming to be mediums, and who are not directly linked to the family, have also expressed concerns about a potential abduction.

One woman insists a 'green rusty tin door' is crucial to finding the four-year-old after seeing it in a vision.

Search for 4yo WA girl enters fourth day

The search for a missing four-year-old girl on Western Australia's northwest coast is entering its fourth day amid fears she may have been abducted.

Police on Monday searched a number of shacks located along the coastline at the campsite.

"We are continuing to throw everything we have at this and we will continue until we can provide some answers as to what has happened to Cleo," Inspector Jon Munday told reporters.

"Certainly we are not ruling (abduction) out. We are not going to get blinkered or assume that something has happened. Everything is on the table until we can rule it out."

This is a bit confusing. So they are talking to the father but that is not who was camping with the girl as it mentions her mother and her partner. I suppose a statement from all is pretty standard though.

No, they have different names in the articles so it's two different people.
ok, just rereading the daily mail article, it seems bio father wasn't with them and they are calling mom's and her partner the parents.

I wonder how much partying might have been going on and if she woke and they weren't in the tent and she went out to find them. The missing sleeping bag is perplexing though and parents not noticing her leaving the tent. If they had the entry zipped, those suckers make lots of racket when you are trying to sleep from every tent we have had, which is why i question what the parents were doing at the time.

I thought of the zipper earlier too... The vague description (none basically) of an interaction with her I also don't like...

I don't picture a 4 year old leaving nor dragging her sleeping bag with her... Wandering off is one thing but with the sleeping bag is another... I wonder what the temps are/were like...

it will be spring there, so most likely warm days and chilly nights. Currently 70's-80's daytime and 50's-60's at night per Boolaroo, New South Wales, Australia Weather Forecast and Conditions - The Weather Channel | Weather.com

I can only think of two legitimate reasons for a sleeping bag to be missing... Her being abducted from the tent (parents would have had to be away from the tent - far too much noise otherwise). Or something like blood or urine on the bag and it being disposed of.

Wondering about any vehicles. But LE seems to be on top of surveillance. Also wondering about a younger sibling appearing in family photos...was this child also present?
