Authorities searching for 3-year-old boy who went missing while playing with dog in Grimes County

Authorities are searching for a 3-year-old boy who they said went missing while chasing a neighbors dog in Grimes County.

The Grimes County Sheriff’s Office said 3-year-old Christopher Ramirez was last seen in the 10000 block of Deer Park Lane in the Foxfire subdivision around 1:30 p.m. or 2 p.m.

According to reports, the family was unloading groceries when Ramirez spotted a neighbors dog and started playing with it. Moments later, the family said the boy was gone.

UPDATE: Search moves to vehicles, sheds and structures due to new information

7 p.m.
A boy from Grimes County has been declared missing by authorities after he allegedly went chasing after a loose dog and hasn't been seen since.

Chuck Fleeger with the Amber Alert Network of the Brazos Valley said the boy has been identified as Christopher Ramirez, 3. He is three feet tall and weighs about 45 pounds. Ramirez only speaks Spanish but will respond to his name, according to authorities.

Authorities said the boy has been missing since 2 p.m. Wednesday from the 10,000 block of Deer Park Lane in the Foxfire subdivision. Ramirez was last seen wearing a bright green shirt with Mickey Mouse shoes. Authorities are also going house to house in the area.

A DPS helicopter is also flying in the area to see if they can spot the boy from the air. Amber Alert Network of the Brazos Valley is also at the scene to help search for the boy.

8:30 P.M.
Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell confirmed a dog has returned from the woods where authorities have been searching for Christopher Ramirez. Sheriff Sowell said they have covered more than a square mile of wooded area but have not been able to find the boy.

K9 units with TDCJ as well as DPS helicopters have been working with authorities on the ground. Groups of citizens in and around the Plantersville area have also arrived on scene to help search for Ramirez, but a call for volunteers has not been made at this time.

Several agencies are on scene to provide support, including a dive and rescue team to help search any bodies of water.

Sheriff Sowell said he does not have any reason to believe there is foul play involved and that he is hoping Ramirez will be rescued soon. He said authorities will not stop until Ramirez is found.

10:45 P.M.
Authorities said they have received new information from members of Ramirez's family that he likes to play in vehicles. The search team gathered and decided they would once again search each and every vehicle throughout the subdivision.

Teams will also be searching all sheds, pools and other places that look like good hiding spots.

Missed this yesterday. Step-dad is apparently a sex-offender. Family still cleared though.

Well, cleared or not, that is certainly a red flag. Any idea if his crimes are against children or adults? Not accusing, just saying it is notable. At minimum, he is or was a criminal.

I realize they cleared not only family but extended family. We almost never see that and in fact, they rarely clear anyone nor say it in these cases. If it's a fact and not a strategy, then the only way I can figure they can clear all and so quickly is very convincing proof and alibis of where all were and what they were doing in the time he went missing... Jmo. OR they have a very good idea of who took him if someone indeed did...

They may have footage of him running down the road exactly when reported.
Not sure about step-dad. His name hasn't been released, as far as I know. But it looks like they determined he was at work in/near Houston at the time.

Authorities also said they're checking Christopher's stepdad's employment log to ensure he was at work at the time of the boy's disappearance.

Sowell confirmed to KBTX that Christopher’s stepdad is a registered sex offender, but authorities have checked the stepdad out and verified that he was in the Houston area at the time Christopher went missing. Christopher’s biological father lives in Mexico, Sowell also confirmed, and while he or any other family members are not considered persons of interest, the Mexican Consulate has offered its assistance.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I figure they have footage or are fairly certain neighbor sightings are accurate and trustworthy. I mean still though someone he knew could have called him over or something but again, if they can verify dad was in Mexico, stepdad was at work, etc., that helps.

It makes me think of Dulce even though she was in a park where there were likely strangers, however, this boy also could have run into strangers, they mention a splash pad, a jogger, etc. If there are custody issues, one always has to wonder too...

So I have not been able to read all articles, if stepdad was at work, was it just mom with the boy after getting groceries? Or were siblings with too, etc. who were around while unloading? Or any other adults?

Oh thank God!!! How rare is this?? I had LITTLE hope I will be the first to admit just due to the time that has passed.

Definitely happy tears for this one! At the tail end of the timeline of a positive outcome for his age too. And 5 miles away. Sounds like that was WELL outside of the search zone too. Big sigh of relief for Christopher and his mama.

I wonder if he followed the dog, saw the dog enter the woods, etc., followed it and the dog lost him and eventually came back out and he kept going in the wrong direction. Five miles is a long way though for a 3 year old... Man the next town over here is 6 miles away and I can't even imagine a child getting that far and safely of that age... And even happening to come back near a home again... Wow. The area must not be quite like where Summer went missing, a child could go so far in there and never see another residence, etc. I do wonder if he is closer to 4 than 3.

He also may have thought he knew where he was going, at least initially... I know of a child back when (but at the age of 5) who knew her way to her grandmother's miles and miles away but that was down streets and roads...

He just turned 3 in August, per NCMEC.
Wow so he was recently 2 even. Oh my they are really fortunate he was found okay. There's a good chance then too he is not going to clearly be able to tell them a lot of where he was and what happened... Maybe they can trace his trail backwards somewhat. I mean kids don't even know hours and days usually at that age or have a great sense of time or ideas like "yesterday" or "tomorrow". There is always the possibility too that someone dumped him off and recently but hard to say how likely that is...

Tim said he left his home around 9:45 a.m. and found the boy about two hours later at around 11:30 a.m. He said he found the child near a pipeline.

“He was probably about 10 yards into the woods,” Tim said. “I was walking up a pipeline and I heard a noise. But it sounded like it maybe could be an animal in distress. Sometimes deer will do that -- They’ll kind of make noises like you think it’s maybe a human. So I’m walking a little bit further and I’m really listening hard. I’m wanting to hear a child, right? And so then I hear what sounds like a human child in distress. But I couldn’t understand the words. As it turns out, he only speaks Spanish and I couldn’t understand what he might’ve been saying. Every time I heard him I yelled out ‘Hello, hello!’ but I didn’t get a response.”

As soon as Tim heard the noise again, he called authorities and told them the child might be there.

“They came out and I told them where to go looking and they started looking and I heard the noise up the pipeline, a little further off to the right and they were doing their thing. They were yelling for Christopher and now I know his name.”

“So as I’m walking back down the pipeline to come back home and I hear the noise and I thought ‘that’s odd,’” Tim said.

That’s when Tim began calling out for Christopher.

“This time, I got a response,” Tim said. “Prior to that I never got a response when I yelled out. But I called his name and he responded and he kept talking and talking and I just went through the thick of the woods and I found him.”

Tim found the boy in a grassy area.

“I picked him up and he was totally naked -- No shoes, no clothing, nothing . . . Three days without food or water . . I picked him up and he wasn’t shaking, he wasn’t nervous,” Tim said. “He was calm.”

So very relieved still. He was naked? I get he is a toddler and it was possibly hot but hmm... He never went near a water source but did strip his clothes and shoes off? And he made it five miles? And ended up near someone's house...

The main thing is he is safe but this story seems a little odd to me. The comments underneath are quite interesting as well.

I'm not saying anything other than I would hope this is all being looked at. I am not saying this is not a miracle and honestly, thank goodness he is safe but questions remain.

His clothes must be somewhere in that five miles and more. How long was he barefoot I wonder... Can they send a search dog backwards from the scene of where he was found? Perhaps that will locate the clothing.

We see this in cases where the kids can’t be found right away over and over again. My first thought on this case was that I hoped they would expand the search area!

One thing seems certain, this boy was not on a street or in public very long. Once he was reported missing and the alert was raised and sent out, I think most people would notice an untended 3 year old and if he got naked in early days, we know that would be notable and reported if a naked child was on the street or in a park.

The man said he went quiet any time he called out to him until he knew his name. I wondered at first if he did the same with searchers (making it harder to find him) but they would have known his name...

I would be interested in the condition of his feet as well. Five miles is alot for such a young child, and it's not imaginable to me that he walked that far in 3 days, he would also be sleeping part of the time. Weird. 🤷‍♀️
And where are clothes and shoes?

I have to say and am going to admit this case is bothering me greatly. I tried to let it go and did not think of it yesterday and last night it came to mind again bit time and was bothering me. I almost got on here and said something but didn't.

Not since Braylen Noble has something so not sat right with me case wise. Oh there are moments in other ones but not like this where I don't feel it adds up at all.

Thankfully in this case, the child is alive, Braylen is not.

Here's the thing, the child is found but it sounds as if all is concluded and any investigation over. I think they said something to the effect (LE) the answers may never be known as to where, how, etc. he got through and so forth.

This child was naked. This child made it five miles and miraculously was right near a home. Not just a home but one where the man had just been told by God he would find him. One that had only heard of it the night before at church. This child's clothing has to be somewhere. They now have an ending location to retrace possibly his path and why would that not be done?

I believe in God and I believe in miracles but it doesn't mean God didn't give me a brain cell to not believe in everything necessarily if it just doesn't pass the smell test. This one strikes me highly questionable and it nags.

And I can believe a child can travel further than one thinks in days but again, it doesn't add up. As you said, he would have slept, was he covered in scratches and bites, how were his feet? Was he bruised from falling or tripping? Did he have bruises from branches and falling down or anything?

If there is EVEN a POSSIBILITY someone had him and dropped him off or dumped him, does that not need to be looked at and investigated? Because if so, that person is still out there with regard to this boy and other children as well.

Something else I find odd is they cleared this family and extended family very fast and we never see that. Generally they can be 99 percent sure the family is not involved and they still won't say so or exclude any/the possibility. I am not saying the family did anything, just that it's odd just as assuming this ending/resolution is fact and not investigating further.

A 3 year old travels five miles, there is NEVER a lead by a dog of any kind, nor apparently a foot print, nor a trace of him or any sighting or evidence in searches. The child is found naked. Five miles away days later. The stepfather is apparently a sex offender (not saying he did anything and I don't even know if it relates to an adult or child his offense(s) ). A man found him who was told by God he would and then he did and lo and behold right near his own home which was five miles away. LE is just like okay, we may never know more but case closed and at least he's fine. Now just based on this paragraph, tell me that all puts up no red flags to anyone or reason to investigate a little further?

I always check myself to be sure I am not making too much of something. I put this to my mom who is 77 and does not follow crime in the way I do nor did she know of this case. I told her the just the basics (and I thought he was FIVE then) and she was like "NO WAY". Then I found he was three and she basically snorted that anyone would not question this. Just sayin'...

Anywhoooo, I hope no one takes me wrong in that I am VERY RELIEVED this boy is alive and home but I for one am not in total belief of all without further answers/investigation of which it appears there will be none... Jmo.

I do have some wonderings about things as well, but it seems like they do not believe this is anything other than what was stated and found. I definitely wouldn't have been shocked to see news that they were looking into something else or there were charges or something. But sometimes things really are as said and kids do get found alive. :)

Christopher Ramirez returned home after being released from a Houston area hospital, where he had been receiving care since he was found on Saturday.

When he was found, Christopher was dehydrated but overall was in good spirits, according to authorities. Nuñez said her son was healthy after his release from the hospital.

Authorities did not provide details Monday on how the boy survived by himself for four days. Sowell said investigators don’t believe Christopher was taken by anybody when he went missing.

Monday afternoon Christopher was able to leave the hospital return home, after having been gone for five days. Sheriff’s deputies, police, firefighters and others involved in the search for the toddler all escorted him home.

After being reunited with his mother, Christopher was taken to Texas Children’s Hospital in The Woodlands. The Grimes County Sheriff’s Office said at that time he was tired, dehydrated and hungry, but in good spirits and overall healthy. Once home, his mother, Araceli Nunez, spoke to the public showing her gratitude for the people who never stopped looking for her son.

After learning that Christopher was very interested in police officers, Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell had a present for Christopher.

“It’s my honor to pin him with a Junior Deputy badge,” said Sowell. “After all this, he’s passed his survival test. He could be an army ranger, a Navy Seal, a police officer, whatever he wants.”

Regarding the investigation, Sowell says there is still no evidence indicating Ramirez was abducted at any point while he was missing. The boy was found naked, and authorities are continuing to search for his clothes. While it remains an open case, Sowell says investigators are wrapping up all aspects.
