Syracuse.com wins Emmy Award for ‘Firecracker’ documentary about horrific Central NY murder
Syracuse.com received its third-ever New York Emmy Award for its
Firecracker documentary investigating the
1996 cold case of Carol Ryan.
The award was announced on Saturday in New York City.
The Emmy-winning documentary
Firecracker: The Murder of Carol Ryan outlines how Carol spent the hours leading up to her horrific murder in 1996, how her family was affected by the monstrous crime, how first responders bungled the scene, what challenges police still face in the investigation, and how
DNA technology could break open the case.
Firecracker received the Emmy in the crime and justice category for short or long form video content. Other finalists in this category were all from the New York City metropolitan area.
“This is one of the highest honors for television and online media and speaks to the quality of work coming from our newsroom,” said Lauren Long, content director and photo/video editor at syracuse.com. “Katrina and the team worked tirelessly on the project, making sure every detail was accurately and respectfully reported.”
“Carol’s homicide was sad and disturbing, and watching the former Medical Examiner
Mary Jumbelic’s interview was difficult for me,” Lemczak said. “But every time this documentary is shared with the world in a new way, I have a tiny glimmer of hope that Carol’s murderer might be found and brought to justice.”
