Carol Ryan was last seen on September 1, 1996 leaving East Room Bar off of James Street at approximately 2 a.m. Several hours later she was found seriously injured and left to die on Route 91 in Jamesville, NY. Carol was taken to the hospital where she died from her injuries after five hours of surgery.

Authorities stated that Carol had been brutally beaten and somebody had inserted an explosive device into her vagina. No one was been charged in this case.

Syracuse.com wins Emmy Award for ‘Firecracker’ documentary about horrific Central NY murder​

Syracuse.com received its third-ever New York Emmy Award for its Firecracker documentary investigating the 1996 cold case of Carol Ryan.

The award was announced on Saturday in New York City.

The Emmy-winning documentary Firecracker: The Murder of Carol Ryan outlines how Carol spent the hours leading up to her horrific murder in 1996, how her family was affected by the monstrous crime, how first responders bungled the scene, what challenges police still face in the investigation, and how DNA technology could break open the case.

Firecracker received the Emmy in the crime and justice category for short or long form video content. Other finalists in this category were all from the New York City metropolitan area.

“This is one of the highest honors for television and online media and speaks to the quality of work coming from our newsroom,” said Lauren Long, content director and photo/video editor at syracuse.com. “Katrina and the team worked tirelessly on the project, making sure every detail was accurately and respectfully reported.”


“Carol’s homicide was sad and disturbing, and watching the former Medical Examiner Mary Jumbelic’s interview was difficult for me,” Lemczak said. “But every time this documentary is shared with the world in a new way, I have a tiny glimmer of hope that Carol’s murderer might be found and brought to justice.”

30 years after Carol Ryan’s brutal murder, investigators are still working the case​

Thirty years after Carol Ryan was brutally murdered in Jamesville, the case remains unsolved.

The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office asked the public on Tuesday to continue coming forward with any information that might help investigators determine who killed Ryan and bring closure for her family.


On Tuesday, the sheriff’s office posted about the case on social media, saying investigators remain committed to finding out what happened to Ryan and who is responsible.

“Investigators continue to actively pursue leads, utilizing modern forensic advancements and investigative techniques that weren’t available three decades ago,” the sheriff’s office said.

Thirty years later, the sheriff’s office said investigators are still pursuing leads.

“Even the smallest detail, remembered or shared now, could be the key to bringing closure to this case and holding the person or persons responsible accountable,” the sheriff’s office said Tuesday.

Under New York law, there is no statute of limitations for murder. If Ryan’s killer is identified, arrested and convicted, they could face up to life in prison.
