Amber Alert issued after mother took newborn from Phoenix hospital, officials say

An Amber Alert was issued for an infant who was allegedly taken by his mother in a duffel bag from an Arizona hospital.

According to Phoenix police, the 5-day-old boy, identified as Baby Santana, was last seen Wednesday at Valleywise Health Medical Center at around 11:45 a.m.

Authorities said the baby’s mother, 24-year-old Rosa Santana, was seen leaving the hospital with the baby in the duffel bag.

The newborn had a feeding tube attached and is in need of life-saving medical treatment.

Baby Santana was last seen at Valley Wise Medical Health Center at 2601 E. Roosevelt Street in Phoenix, AZ. Baby Santana is a 5-day old male infant with an attached feeding tube. He was last seen wearing an unknown clothing description and is in need of life saving medical treatment. Authorities say that the newborn child may be in the company of Rosa Santana, his mother. She is 5 foot 2 inches tall, 115 pounds, brown hair with brown eyes. Santana was last seen wearing a dark shirt, dark pants, and carrying a black duffle bag. On 07/12/2023 at approximately 1145 hours, Rosa Santana was last seen leaving the hospital at 24th Street and Roosevelt Street with her newborn baby in the duffle bag. Please contact 911 if you have any information.

I'm too tired to voice the thoughts that come to mind here but I have hope the child is and will be found alive.

I will say jsut off this little info:

1. She either had access to her baby meaning no CPS or DCF involvement, or:

2. This hospital is as lax as they come that if she was barred from being around her baby that she gained enough access to take a newborn, put the newborn in a duffel bag, walk down the halls of a big city hospital, probably take the elevator, etc., etc.

3. A baby can breathe in a duffel bag for quite some time just as a cat can under a quilt all day long, it was probably just the means to leave there with the child.

4. If she wanted to get rid of her child, would she have had the child at a hospital, carried the baby to term, etc. or even wen to the hospital if she wanted to get rid of the child and not have the child. Maybe the child wans't full term hard to say but still the baby was in the hospital so probably had there.

5. Or there is a LOT more to this than we know. I'm also not going to jump into the life saving surgery as if it was to be done that moment or she wouldn't have ever been able to pull this off, staff would have been around, doctors, prep going on, etc. and this is a newborn so not so immediate rushing of the child into surgery that she couldn't access the child, visit, take the child and get through the hospital AND leave??

Again I'm tired but I have more.

The only way there aren't things here that just aren't as bad as they make it appear IS IF this hospital and staff were entirely LAX.

Thoughts aren't clear, tired as I said but praying hard and have hope in this one. It sounds like there is little hope but I just can't see why she'd do this unless she wanted the child and had some issue with the hospital, the plan, etc. I guess it could be mental illness, could be postpartum, etc. in which case that would be more worrisome. No mention of the baby being premature or anything, but having a feeding tube...

Maybe she did something awful but on the face of it, it seems she got her baby out of this hospital.

However, there is an alert so I'm probably wrong and she probably had bad intentions and the child won't be found safe but there would have to be some reason then she even bothered to take the child if the child was unwanted? Can't think of any reason there except mental illness.

There HAS to be more to this one.

Thank God. I would have guessed this would have ended badly because he was still reliant on hospital care. This is wonderful!

No. No more.

Not surprised one bit. There is something being left out here of course.

She is in custody while they investigate details.

Haven't heard why yet. Santana is her child. Arguably(!!) she gave birth to the child! It isn't a kidnapping unless they provide the reasons that it is and why it fit an Amber Alert status.

If she had no right to the baby and DCF or some such was involved, then they need to explain how it is she had access and could accomplish all of this at this hospital? If no such involvement, then WHY an Amber Alert when taken by his own mother????

Thank GOD the baby is safe. My guess was that he would be found safe. SO WHAT is the story here?!

There is alot left out during the investigation. My best guess is DCS already had their hand in immediately taking the baby. And she was not to have contact. And she didn't l8ke that. That's my best guess.

that seems a likely scenario to me too. but if so, we have a really lax hospital. people shouldn't even be able to access a newborn first of all, and an at risk one needing life saving involvement no way. so i agree that's very likely but then how did she have access, put the baby with a feeding tube into a duffel bag, walk our of a room and down the hall, etc.? i mean think about that.... did they not notice her entering the hospital even or was she still there herself from giving birth...? and if DCF is involved then why did she have any access, etc.?

Love you too you problem child! So what do you think is up here? And what is missing here? Because something is.
It seems to me at this point that the mother wasn't allowed the child. Not only was the baby reliant on hospital care. But I get the feeling the baby was going to be taken away from her. That it was already in the works beforehand and she knew it. That's my best guess. Why else would she do that?. To me it seems like a desperate irrational act of a woman who shouldn't have the child. To take your baby from the hospital that will die without being cared for there?.

Yeah t is the most likely I agree. But I'm not convinced of anything in this one. Clearly she was able to access the baby or was alone with the baby which doesn't quite fit. If that's the reason, we have a very lax hospital and agency as well.

Later that same night, the mother and baby were located at an apartment complex near 75th Avenue and Indian School Road.

Officials say the baby is back at the hospital receiving proper medical treatments.

Santana is in police custody, held on a $10,000 bond and is facing felony child abuse charges.

In an initial court appearance, a Maricopa County prosecutor alleged that Santana took her baby from the hospital after learning that fentanyl had been found in his system.

I'm beyond making sense of this one at the moment. So what was taking him going to accomplish? Or how would it help her?

Baby was at an apartment with her and clearly alive. Was she taking care of him? I'd like to know.

Something isn't sitting right here. So five days after he was born and had a feeding tube, etc. placed and was assessed they then found fentanyl in his system? Or it took that long for results? Or they knew already but she had just learned about it? And if they knew, why was she alone with the child, etc.?

I'm very irritable, can I read of a case that makes any sense please?

This much I know. We have a mother who took her own baby and he was not found dead. Despite hearing the shock value of a duffel bag, etc. she took him most likely home. I'm not defending her but I am saying I don't think there was any intent of harm or that would have happened. Although she is charged with felony child abuse so was the child abused or is this simply the charge for taking her baby?

Again they need to tell us how she was even able to take the baby or had access if this is the case? No mention of that ever or agency failure.

IF all is as it seems we have an uncaring drug addict of a mother or that's the picture being portrayed. Did she go to the hospital to deliver or did some emergency land her there delivering? Was he full term? I'd guess so as nothing at all has been said to indicate otherwise.

I don't know what it is but something just smells here. I guess things don't always make sense but why wouldn't she just take off and flee herself unless she cared about and wanted her child?

Maybe I expect something to make sense or be rationable and she is just a drugged up or withdrawing mess of a mother whose actions of course make no sense and I just need to get that through my head. Yet again something is missing here. HOW was she able to do this if all this was going on and the situation so serious? Did hospital staff turn a blind eye or someone help her? And that thought leads me elsewhere.

I think I'm overthinking and just irritated.

I think it's pretty apparent this was it. She was afraid she would get arrested and/or lose custody.
He was tested when he was born and she was informed the day she took him.
I hope the hospital reviews their procedures surrounding newborn safety. Because NOBODY, custodial parent or not, should be able to stuff their child into a duffel bag and walk out.
And she took him HOME, btw... to use drugs again.

Grandfather of newborn taken from hospital speaks to 12News about mother's possible motive

The 5-day-old has a medical condition requiring a feeding tube as part of his lifesaving medical treatment. For unknown reasons, police said 24-year-old Rosa Santana left the hospital with her child against medical advice.

“She needs help,” Paul Santana, the newborn’s grandfather, told 12News. “She’s addicted obviously to fentanyl, just like so many other young people in the country.”

The grandfather said he is hurt after learning what his daughter is accused of doing. He said he last spoke to Rosa Santana two months ago through social media but hadn’t seen her in person in about three years because of her addiction.

“She was using drugs and obviously she was using when she was pregnant,” the grandfather said. “What happened more or likely is that she was scared. She thought that they were probably arresting her for negligence.”

It was through media reports that the grandfather found out about the situation that involved his daughter. He said she has three other children under 5 who are in the state’s custody.

“I’m sure she did whatever she did out of fear and anxiety,” Baby Santana’s grandfather said. “I need to stick with my child and try to help her and support her through this.”

Valleywise Health Medical Center tells 12News staff was alerted the baby and mother were missing after noticing they were not in their acute care room around 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday.

“We notified the Phoenix Police Department and began quickly securing access points throughout the medical center, surveillance of parking lots, mobilization of medical center staff and security personnel in search of the missing mother and infant,” Michael Murphy, a spokesperson for the hospital, said in a statement.

The hospital tells 12News a nurse called 911 at 12:04 p.m., but Phoenix Police said they were first notified about the incident at 1:17 p.m.

By 2 p.m., patrol officers that had responded to the hospital notified detectives from the Family Investigations Bureau with the Child Crimes Unit, police said.

At 5:35 p.m. detectives reached out to the Missing Person’s Unit asking for help, who provided a bulleting with photos of Rosa Santana and the newborn. Police said the bulletin was sent to all law enforcement agencies.

By 5:47 p.m., police said detectives reached out over radio communications and began broadcasting a “be on the lookout” every 15 minutes as officers patrolled the hospital, surrounding areas, and places the mother was known to frequent.

“There was no mode of transportation seen,” Sergeant Brian Bower told 12News. “They believed she was on foot.”

At 6:55 p.m., the Amber Alert was activated by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

“This case is a little unique than other Amber Alerts because there was no car involved, there was no more of transportation that was seen,” Bower said.

By 8 p.m., officers were seen searching at an apartment complex near 71st Avenue and Indian School Road.

“They had police set up at every exit and entrance of the neighborhood,” resident Antonio Carrasquillo told 12News. “They had at least 2 to 3 officers checking the car, one with a flashlight. They asked people to open their trunks and checked there.”

At 9:34 p.m. Baby Santana and the mother were found inside an apartment believed to be her residence.

Police officers were welcomed into the apartment and took Rosa Santana into custody with no difficulty, Sgt. Bower said.

The 24-year-old mother was booked into jail on felony child abuse charges.

By 10 p.m., the newborn child was back at Valleywise “receiving proper medical help,” police said.

In court records, it's alleged Baby Santana was drug tested after he was born on July 6, and screens “showed the victim had fentanyl in his umbilical cord sample indicating long-term fentanyl use by Rosa.”

Shortly after the baby was born, he was placed in the ICU. He was suffering from withdrawals and was administered morphine, and had a feeding tube placed, arresting documents said.

When Rosa Santana left the hospital with her newborn in a black duffle bag, records said she had legal custody over the baby and “had not yet been served with a court-authorized removal order by the Department of Child Safety.”

Hospital staff alerted DCS and Phoenix police.

The mother’s phone was pinged and located came back to the apartment complex on 71st Ave and Indian School Road, records showed.

There, a witness approached officers, who indicated the 24-year-old was at her apartment.

“Officers made contact with Rosa in the bedroom… and found her unconscious, with drug paraphernalia in her hand and a piece of paper with powder residue consistent with fentanyl on it on the bed next to her,” court records said.

Baby Santana was found on the bed, on his back, wrapped in a blanket and placed between his mother and several pillows, near the substance believed to be fentanyl, documents read.

During a post-Miranda interview with detectives, court documents said Rosa Santana had been notified that morning that the victim had tested positive for fentanyl.

“Rosa stated she has had her three previous children removed from her custody by DCS and expected the victim to be removed as well,” documents read. “Rosa stated she did not feel the victim was in any medical danger and had been improving and feeding without his NG tube.”

The mother told police after leaving the hospital with Baby Santana, she went to her boyfriend’s work, picked him up, who then dropped her off at an apartment, records said.

Rosa Santana said she fed the baby and once he fell asleep, she used fentanyl by inhaling the powder, arresting documents said.

During her court appearance, the mother said, “There was no fentanyl around my son.”

“To be honest with you, I never expected any of this to happen,” the mother told the judge. “I never wanted any of this to happen. I never tried to hurt my own son. I was trying to avoid a bunch of more drama.”

Well that sums it up I guess and had other children all removed too. And drugs.

Some of it doesn't make sense. She was on foot they say but went and picked her boyfriend up. They do need to get their act together. She was informed of the findings before there was a court order and just like I guessed they left her alone with him or so it sounds. Also what time police were called, I think the hospital is most likely lying to cover their butts.

It almost makes me wonder if someone at the hospital felt sorry for her or helped her. She was informed before an order issued, had an extra hour given to get away if the hospital is lying, knew the damage was coming so wanted to get away from it, etc.

Not sure that I agree on the felony thing as think about it, she was under no court removal order at this point with regard to the child the way they put it so she simply took her own son with still having a right to. A good attorney would likely get it thrown out.

The hospital definitely is at some major fault here as well as any employee who told her. Clearly baby and mom were both in "their" acute care room together so no one separated them or was with them.
