Search continues for baby Andrew after 4 relatives die in triple murder, suicide

Baby Andrew vanished from his home on Tuesday in Miami-Dade County’s Redlands community. Two shootings this week left him an orphan, and his relatives are desperate to find him.

With the help of surveillance video, detectives saw the baby, who was born Jan. 18, in the arms of his father, Ernesto Caballeiro. But when deputies found the 49-year-old father dead on Wednesday in Pasco County, the baby wasn’t there.

Deputies searched the woods in Pasco County. The crime scene was more than 300 miles from where Caballeiro took the newborn baby from his mother while holding an AR-15 rifle, police said.

Caballeiro walked away from his home. Inside, Miami-Dade detectives found the baby’s 40-year-old mother, Arlety Garcia, his 60-year-old maternal grandmother, Isabela Valdes, and his 84-year-old maternal great grandmother, Lina Gonzalez, dead.

“Three generations of brave women were slained protecting the newborn’s life,” Reina Valdes wrote in the family’s GoFundMe account asking for help to cover funeral costs.

Garcia’s 9-year-old daughter survived the bloodshed. Detectives didn’t say if she was in the home during the murders.

The four-bedroom home that turned into a crime scene is in the 21900 block of Southwest 187th Avenue. It’s a quiet Redlands neighborhood surrounded by nurseries and farms.

Garcia’s aunt’s boyfriend Melchor Izquierdo was in tears on Thursday night. He begged whoever may have baby Andrew to return him to a fire department, so he can be with his family.

“He is all we have,” Izquierdo said.

The FBI confirmed Friday that it is assisting in the search for Andrew.

The only ones I can think of would be where the parent turned the child over to someone else, and THEN killed themselves. I can't think of any where the parent kills themselves and then the child is later found safe.
Agree, SWMNBN, but it's weird to me that the 9 year old girl was unharmed and not taken. Of course, I guess we don't know whether she was in the residence at the time of the murders. Does anyone know if the 9 year old was the murderer's child? This case confuses me; I'm glad the little girl is safe; unfortunately, I don't hold out much hope for Andrew's safe return.:(

I swear I read somewhere or heard it in a PC that she was home, survived but they declined to what she saw, if anything. That poor child too, lost her mother, grandmother, great grandmother and baby brother in one day. I hope she is safe and with someone who loves her.

A Florida sheriff’s office K-9 is recovering after he was bitten by a water moccasin while helping the FBI search the Everglades for missing baby Andrew.

K9 Phi was in the Everglades Thursday when he was bitten by the poisonous snake, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

Phi was given some antivenom and has a good prognosis for recovery.

Andrew Caballeiro has been missing since Jan. 28. The Miami Dade Police Department said it has increased the reward to $8,000 for tips that lead investigators to the boy.

John Walsh Takes on Unsolved Case of Missing Baby Andrew

Tonight at 10, John Walsh, best known as the longtime host of America's Most Wanted, will cover the case on his Investigation Discovery program, In Pursuit With John Walsh.

"Newborn Andrew Caballeiro was last seen on January 28, 2020, in Miami, Florida. His mother and two family members were later found murdered," Walsh says in a clip shared with media. "Their suspected killer, Andrew's father, was found deceased in a wooded area of Pasco County, Florida, the next day, but Andrew is still missing."

Detectives believe Ernesto Caballeiro was responsible for the women's deaths. Surveillance footage showed him arriving at the family's home on the day of the killings and leaving with an AR-15 rifle and baby Andrew. An AR-15 was found next to Ernesto's body in the woods in Pasco County.

Because police bloodhounds were unable to pick up the baby's scent in Ernesto's van in Pasco, investigators believe Andrew never made it to that county. In mid-February, police stopped actively searching for the infant; they are now relying on tipsters to come forward with more information.

"Our detectives are still following all the leads they are receiving. We are working with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the FBI," Miami-Dade Police Det. Angel Rodriguez told the Miami Herald .

Amber Alert remains active for Miami baby, missing since January

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) continues to search for a baby who has been missing out of South Florida since January.

An Amber Alert remains active for Andrew Caballeiro, who would be six months old now. Caballeiro was just a week old when authorities say he was taken by his father, 49-year-old Ernesto Caballeiro. The father was later found deceased in Pasco County from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The child was never located.

Have you seen baby Andrew? | Amber Alert still active 1 year after the newborn went missing

It's been one year since anyone has reported seeing baby Andrew Caballerio.

The baby was just days old when police say he disappeared on Jan. 28, 2020, after his relatives were shot and killed in their South Florida home.

Shortly after an Amber Alert was activated, Andrew's father, Ernesto Caballeiro, was found dead in a car in Pasco County. But there was no sign of Andrew.

Bloodhounds sniffed a pacifier found in the van but were unable to pick up the newborn's trail.

"The baby may be anywhere in the state," Nocco said at the time.

Search for missing baby turns into cold case 1 year after disappearance

The search for a baby who went missing after his mother, grandmother and great-grandmother were found dead has turned into a cold case.

Fernando Alvarez is a private investigator hired by the child’s surviving family, and one year later, they’ve accepted the grim reality the child will never be found.

“We want to give closure to this case to find baby Andrew, so he can be buried along with his mother, but it’s not happening,” Alvarez said.

Andrew’s family is focused on raising his sister, who was not with the family on the day they were murdered.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Friday marks National Amber Alert Awareness Day, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is highlighting numerous unsolved cases in the state, including two from Miami-Dade County.

ANDREW CABALLEIRO
The most recent case is that of Andrew Caballeiro, who police say was taken away by his father in January 2020 when he was just 1 week old.

Ernesto Caballeiro, 49, was later found dead in the Tampa Bay area, but his son remains missing.

According to Miami-Dade police detectives, Caballeiro was armed with an AR-15 when he took the newborn baby from his mother, 40-year-old Arlety Garcia, at the family’s home in the Redlands community.

Police said Caballeiro fatally shot Garcia, along with her 60-year-old mother, Isabela Valdes, and her 84-year-old grandmother, Lina Gonzalez.

Garcia’s 9-year-old daughter survived the bloodshed. Detectives didn’t say if she was in the home during the murders.

According to Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco, deputies in his jurisdiction later discovered Caballeiro’s body in a wooded area. He appeared to have died of a single gunshot wound from a rifle.

Nocco said bloodhounds assisted in the search, but “there was no indication that the child was in the area.” He said a pacifier was found in Caballeiro’s abandoned van and a witness came forward and said he saw a blonde woman in the truck, but that woman has never been found or identified.

Nocco also said investigators were told that there should have been a pickaxe in the vehicle.

“We have no indication that there’s a pickaxe anywhere where we are searching,” he said at the time.

Two Florida children missing for years highlighted on AMBER Alert Day
State law enforcement officials are using National AMBER Alert Day to draw attention to the search for two children, including one who has not been seen in decades.

In a statement Tuesday, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) shared again the AMBER Alert information for Jarkeius Adside and the then-newborn Andrew Caballeiro.

Andrew Caballiero was just a week old when he was abducted on New Year's Day in 2020, the FLDE explained. The boy, who would be three years old now, was last seen in the 21900 block of SW 187th Ave. in Miami.

The man accused of taking the infant, Ernesto Caballeiro, was later found dead, the agency said. The alert does not include any information about his death.

America's Lost Children: 37 Active AMBER Alerts Still Haunt Families

The first AMBER Alert was issued in 1996. The notification, which stands for America's Missing Broadcast Emergency Response, has recovered at least 1,074 abducted children around the country.

Throughout the years, however, not all missing children are found and there are still 37 active alerts.

"Obviously we would want ever case of a missing child to be resolved and for the child to be recovered alive," Alan Nanavaty, executive director of special programs the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children missing children division, told Newsweek.

The alerts serve as just one tool to help find missing children. Last year alone, Nanavaty said her organization had 20,000 children missing reported to the organization. Around 90% of those children were found.

"Since we've been tracking AMBER Alerts, since early 2005 timeframe, 99% of the children have been recovered," Nanavaty said. "It's not a good or bad thing. It's just what it is, and law enforcement continues to work on the cases."

"I think in terms of the AMBER Alert being used or activated at this point on these cases, the value diminishes over time. However, there are still things that can be done," Nanavaty said. "The most important part is locating that child as quickly as possible and bringing them home safely."

2020 Amber Alerts

Andrew Caballeiro went missing when his family was killed. His mother Arlety García Valdés, 40; grandmother Isabel Valdés González, 60; and Lina González Licor, 84, were killed in Miami by the baby's father Ernesto Caballeiro who kidnapped Andrew and fled.

Caballeiro was found dead by a self-inflicted gunshot in a wooded area of Pasco County, but Andrew hasn't been seen since.
