AMBER ALERT: St. Louis County Police search for 5-year-old who went missing in Affton

The Missouri Highway Patrol has issued an Amber Alert for a 5-year-old girl who they say was abducted this morning from Affton.

Officials say Alesie Dawson was taken around 8 a.m. from the 8900 block of New Hampshire Avenue in a stolen Jeep Renegade.

St. Louis County Police say the vehicle has been recovered at a nearby apartment complex but the child has not.

The girl is a black female with four ponytails and last seen wearing a pink "flower power" t-shirt and blue shorts.

Police do not have her picture since she recently began staying with the guardian at this location. They also don't know if the suspect is a stranger or a person known to the child.

Police say Ashley Collins, 29, and her girlfriend, Kayla Williams, 31, stated Collins’ 2020 Jeep Renegade was stolen with a five-year-old girl inside.

Collins was charged with incorrectly using 911 and making a false report. Both misdemeanors carry a maximum $1,000 fine and up to six months in jail.

The probable cause states that Collins had informed the police that she “was a temporary guardian of the child.” She said she placed the child in the backseat and went into the apartment but Williams came out to find both were gone.

“Instead of calling 911, Ashely Collins drove Kayla Williams to work using Kayla’s car,” noted St. Louis County Police Department in the probable cause statement. “Ashley called her bank to see if they could locate her car using GPS since the bank was financing the car. She eventually called 911.”

After interviewing both women, the police found the car a mile away. Law enforcement searched for five-hours for the non-existent child until Collins and Williams confessed. During that time, the Missouri State Highway Patrol launched an Amber Alert for the reportedly missing girl.

Collins is being held on a $10,000 cash-only bond. Information on Williams’ detention status was not immediately available.
