Justice for Dylan Redwine: seven years and waiting

Dylan Redwine disappeared seven years ago Tuesday in La Plata County, an event that prompted a yearslong investigation that led to the arrest of the boy’s father on suspicion of murder.

Dylan’s disappearance Nov. 19, 2012, and subsequent homicide investigation sparked national attention. The boy, 13, was last seen with his father, Mark Redwine, on surveillance footage at the Durango-La Plata County Airport and at Walmart in Durango.

“It’s kind of surreal,” said Elaine Hatfield-Hall, Dylan’s mother, in an interview Tuesday with The Durango Herald. “Sometimes, it doesn’t feel like it happened.”

Dylan’s last known whereabouts were at his father’s home, 2343 County Road 500, just north of Vallecito Reservoir. His last phone activity or communication was at 9:37 p.m. Nov. 18, 2012, when he sent text messages to a friend about plans to meet up.

Dylan’s friend sent a text at 6:46 the next morning asking, “where are you,” and received no response.

Investigators found the boy’s partial remains in June 2013 about 8 miles up Middle Mountain Road. Hikers found the boy’s skull in November 2015 about 1½ miles up Middle Mountain Road from where the rest of his remains were found.

Law enforcement arrested Mark Redwine, now 58, in July 2017 in Washington state and accused him of second-degree murder and child abuse. He has been incarcerated ever since at the La Plata County Jail.

Redwine’s trial date has been postponed at least three times in the past year. He is currently scheduled for a four-week trial in April 2020.

Mark Redwine trial moved to April

The trial for Mark Redwine, who is charged in connection with the 2012 disappearance and death of his 13-year-old son Dylan Redwine, has been delayed again after a mistrial was declared late last year.

Mark Redwine's latest trial was set to begin late this month on Jan. 25, however during a hearing Tuesday morning, the trial was moved back and is now set to begin on Monday, April 12. A pre-trial conference hearing is set for March 5.
I swear sometimes I just want to say why don't you just let all perps roam the streets!! I say it and will say it again, our system is BROKEN. And that's the nicest way of putting it...

Loveland heart calls for ‘Justice for Dylan Redwine’

Elaine Hall spent what would have been the 22nd birthday of her son, Dylan Redwine, in Loveland, finding comfort in her family and in a red wooden heart displayed in honor of her beloved boy.

Nicole Yost — Elaine’s niece and Dylan’s cousin — led her aunt along the sidewalk as traffic buzzed past on West Eisenhower Boulevard on Saturday. With Nicole’s mom — Elaine’s sister — on FaceTime, she pointed out the red heart on a light pole in the median: “Justice for Dylan Redwine.”

“We want you to know how much we love you and how much we miss him,” Yost, a Loveland resident, said to her Aunt Elaine.

The journey has been long and difficult, said both Yost and Hall, but they said family members are standing strong as they wait for the trial to begin, aiming to keep Dylan’s story and his name out there, and ultimately hoping for just what the valentine heart says: Justice for Dylan Redwine.

Hall said the road since his death has been difficult but that she is determined to see justice for her son, determined to change the system to prevent the same from happening to others, to carry on, to keep Dylan’s name and memory alive, all with the love and support of family members.

Mark Redwine’s trial is now scheduled to begin in April.

LA PLATA COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) - The judge in the murder trail against Mark Redwine reportedly declared another mistrial on Friday. Our sister station at CBS Denver says in Friday’s pre-trial conference, Judge Jeffery Wilson said COVID-19 metrics in La Plata County have not changed enough to ensure a fair trial.
This comes after a previous attempt came in October and November 2020.
Mark Redwine is charged in the death of his son, 13-year-old Dylan Redwine. Redwine was indicted on second-degree murder charges and child abuse in 2017.
CBS Denver says Judge Wilson hopes to resume jury trials at the end of April. The new trial date is set for June 16th and a pre-trial conference set for May 14th.

It's about time and I hope it truly proceeds this time. Man does our justice system need some major tune-ups. Jmo.

I’ve been waiting years for this trial. I can’t imagine how Dylan’s mom feels. Up and down and up and down. It’s ridiculous.
It is very unfair and it is ridiculous. It adds a ton more pain and trauma onto an already traumatized victims' family. It NEEDS to change. And while Covid affected things, it is not like there were not major problems before that and in some cases, it seems a great excuse to use for yet more delays and backed up justice systems.

I never understood why LE waited years to arrest and charge Mark Redwine. They had plenty of evidence years before Covid came along and made it even worse.

Whatever they had awhile ago had to be cleared by a DA to ensure they had enough to lead to conviction. They only get one shot at it. So they probably needed more before charging him.

It is understandable to a point why--because of no statute of limitations on murder, they often wait but in the meantime, families go years or decades with this gaping open lack of closure or justice or answers. AND often when they do finally perhaps feel they have enough or they find a body, there is not enough left of remains to necessarily have a great case either, or not one for murder or a better one even by that point, and witnesses and investigators are dead or gone, etc. I am not talking this case specifically but just generally with cases.

I am sure it is a tough call but at a certain point, go forward if you think you even have close to enough and if not, at a certain point roll the dice I guess and give it your all. Depending on the case, that same person could be killing or harming someone else in those intervening years. Jmo.

LE found Dylan's blood in multiple locations of MR's living room in 2012. I understand why this may have been too weak to make an arrest. Maybe he was injured but ran away. In June of 2013 some of Dylan's remains where found so it was known to LE that he was in fact dead and not a runaway. Maybe LE felt that they didn't have enough yet. IMO they had enough to get a conviction then.

In November of 2015 Dylan's skull was found with blunt force trauma marks which showed he was in fact murdered. At that point they definitely had enough evidence to convict. Instead they waited until July 2017 to arrest Mark Redwine. Why wait over a year? I don't know.

When the trial happens I'm interested in seeing what evidence was found after November 2015 and the arrest in July 2017. Was it worth the wait? Could they have arrested Mark with the evidence they had and continued to investigate? I don't see why not. His original trial date was in July 2020, three years after his arrest.

I do hope the waiting is worth it so that Dylan and his loved ones can get justice. The next McStay murder case took a long time too, and it did result in a conviction.

I liked being on a jury. I'd hate to be on that one. EWWWWWWWWW!! :vomit:

Oh please let this be on the internet!!
Jurly selection is expected to last a week with testimony beginning June 21. Wilson said the trial could continue through July 30 at the latest, though he expects it to finish before then. The trial will be streamed online.
