Search for 2 children forcibly abducted from Upstate NY foster home​

Police have issued an Amber Alert for a missing boy and girl from the Rochester area who they believe were abducted by two men wearing ski masks who broke through a window of their foster home.

Police said 5-year-old Dimitri Cash Jr. and 3-year-old Shekeria Cash were abducted in suburban Greece at 8:40 p.m. Monday.

The two men went upstairs and forcibly removed the children, who were in their pajamas. The boy was last seen in fire truck or dinosaur pajamas, while the girl was last seen wearing panda pajamas.

They fled in the homeowner’s van, eventually ditching the vehicle at a nearby apartment complex, authorities said.

Police called it a “planned, targeted abduction” and pleaded with the public for help in finding the children.

Authorities said they want to speak to the children’s father and are trying to locate him.

Sounds like a probable family abduction, but how terrifying for those kids!
They're probably already scared and upset, being removed from their home into foster care. And then two men in ski masks grab them and kidnap them?!?
Way to traumatize your children, who will then likely have to be put BACK into a foster home when they're located.

That's just what I was thinking! Obviously these people don't put the children first in their lives!
 
So dad hasn't had custody for AT LEAST a year, and he's snatched them twice in that time frame? ("Assuming" of course, that it's him this time...) :sigh: I guess he could have re-gained and lost it again too... I do wonder if they've been in foster care the whole time, or with another family member.
These poor kiddos need some stability in their life.
 
So that second article had more detail. Sounds like only foster mom was home and she and children were taped. Also in the previous abduction from school, they mention another son he has so that's at least three children that he has (not saying he took three but is father to three at least).

The kids have been with this foster family for 2 years. There were 7 children in the home, all under age 11.

Seven children? Wow, that's a lot these days.

It seems very likely it was someone related to the children because if there were 7 children all young (under 11 anyhow), they chose 2 who happen to be sister and brother.

Interesting that they cannot locate either the father or the mother. So they have been there for two years, why now I wonder. Not sure it means anything at all but the last time he took a child from school in the one article was also January.

Father of Amber Alert children engulfed in a three-year custody battle
Police say Dimitri Cash once forcibly removed his son from school. By his own admission, the 26-year-old has been engulfed in a custody battle stretching three years.

Family members say Cash has been in contact with them - as well as with a detective in the hours after his two children were abducted from their foster home. Police say two men wearing masks used duct tape to restrain other children and their foster mother.

The Cash family declined an interview on camera, but said there is more to this story that people should know.

13WHAM News obtained chilling dispatch audio from the minutes after the abduction was reported: "Somebody broke into the house, duct taped everyone and took two kids. Supposed to be a three- and four-year-old who were taken."

It was followed by this: "Suspect name is Dimitri Cash."

Greece Police Chief Drew Forsythe later clarified Cash is a person of interest.

"He's the father of these children, and we need to speak to him," Forsythe said during a news conference Tuesday morning.

Later, reached via text, police said they could not talk about the family's claim that there has been communication between the father and a detective.



In an online petition, Cash offers an explanation - saying his children were wrongly taken from him based on false allegations.

Family members said the bitter custody battle intensified when his children were put into foster care.

On a GoFundMe page created last month, Cash posted a photo, alleging his children are being mistreated. He presents no proof to substantiate the claims. Family court cases have privacy protections that seal some information from public viewing.

Family members say this was a father desperate to help his children. They describe him as large and imposing - and not a man described by dispatchers as "around six foot, maybe a little smaller; both of them had small frames, not overly large or skinny."

After the altercation last January, Cash was charged with three misdemeanors including endangering the welfare of a child. That case is still pending in criminal court.

In a statement Wednesday morning, Greece Police said they are not releasing any new details at this time related to the disappearance of Shekeria Cash and Dimitri Cash, Jr..

“We have partnered with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies for assistance with this investigation,” Sgt. Jared Rene of the Greece Police Department said in a statement. “Please know that tireless efforts are being taken to find these children and bring this case to a successful conclusion.”

It's been nearly 48 hours since police were first called to the English Road address from which the children were taken. Ed Suk of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children said time can play a crucial role in investigations such as this one.

“The farther away you get from the initial distribution of the Amber Alert, the longer the case goes on, the more risk we wind up seeing with kids,” he said. “But at the same time, these cases are not always easy to solve, and there’s a lot of cultivation, a lot of investigative work that has to take place.”

Missing kids forcibly took from Greece foster home found safe in Alabama, 1 person in custody​

An Amber Alert has been canceled and the two young children forcibly taken from a Greece foster home Monday night have been found safe in Alabama.

Authorities say 3-year-old Shekeria Cash and 5-year-old Dimitri Cash were found safe out of state Wednesday evening. Greece Police Chief Andrew Forsythe said the kids are currently in police custody and are no longer in danger.

The children were found in Montgomery, Alabama, tracked by a vehicle that was rented in the Rochester area. Chief Forsythe said one person is currently in custody in Alabama, but he could not identify the person due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.

“While this is the best outcome that we could ask for, this investigation is far from over,” Chief Forsythe said. “Every person responsible for this abduction will be sought and apprehended. They will be held responsible for what they did.”

The chief said blood evidence found at the house that was invaded on English Road helped lead police to the suspects. Chief Forsythe credited the cooperation between local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.

“For 48 hours these men and women worked around the clock to develop leads, to run down witnesses, to conduct interviews, and not one time in that 48 hours was there one gripe, or one complaint,” Chief Forsythe said. “To have this done in 48 hours is truly amazing police work. This is truly a moment that we will cherish forever.”

An official from the Western New York U.S. Marshals Office said the kids are now safe, will be returned home, and are currently “happily eating chicken nuggets and watching a Tom and Jerry cartoon.”

“They [the children] were being secreted under a blanket, under the floorboard of a vehicle,” Chief Forsythe said. “You can imagine they’re upset, but as you heard, they’re watching cartoons and eating chicken nuggets so maybe they’re more resilient than we’re giving them credit for.”
