Sandra was last seen walking to the Greenbrae Shopping Cente., which was across the street from her family's apartment. Sandra had received permission from her mother to ride her bike to the Reno Rodeo, which was being held at the Sparks fairgrounds on the day of her disappearance. Serial killers Gerald and Charlene Gallego are known to have been in the Sparks/Reno area on the day Sandra disappeared. It is likely they were trolling the fairgrounds or surrounding neighborhoods for new victims that day. A year earlier , the serial killers had kidnapped 2 teen girls from the same fairgrounds. They were later convicted of additional murders in California. Gerald died in prison. Charlene Gallego turned state's evidence again him, was released from prison in 1997, and now lives in California under an assumed name.
The detectives assigned to Sandra's case are anxious to talk to ANYONE who was living in the Sparks/Reno area in 1978 or who attended the fair that day. Sandra would have had to ride her bike through several neighborhoods to reach the fairgrounds, and police are hoping that someone may remember seeing her. In 1978, law enforcement initially believed that Sandra was a runaway and there was very little investigation into Sandra's disappearance. It was not until years later that the connection with the Gallegos serial killer couple was made.
Mug shots of Charlene (top) and Gerald Gallego. They kidnapped at least 10 girls, kept them as slaves. and then killed them. Gerald used the aliases of "Stephen Feil" and "Stephen Styles". Charlene's name was Charlene Adell ( Williams ) Gallego.
