Investigators release facial reconstruction of unidentified girl whose remains were found in Delaware

Investigators from the Smyrna Police Department and members of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Delaware Division of Forensic Science to release forensic facial reconstructions they hope will lead to the identification of an unidentified girl whose remains were found near the Little Lass fields on Sept. 13.

Police say the girl was Caucasian or Hispanic, and likely between the ages of 2 and 5 years old. She had slightly wavy brown hair and may have suffered from a chronic illness, based on an anthropological examination of her remains. The child had slightly wavy brown hair, investigators say.

The remains of Emma Cole, 3, were found at a softball field in Smyrna, Delaware on Sept. 4, 2019. More than a year later, Pennsylvania couple Brandon and Kristie Haas have been taken into custody as part of an ongoing investigation.
APennsylvania couple was taken into custody this week in connection with the death of the 3-year-old girl whose remains were found last year by a dog walker in Smyrna, authorities said.

Police announced a breakthrough in the case on Thursday, identifying the victim as Emma Cole. The girl's body was found in Little Lass Field, a softball complex in Smyrna, on Sept. 4, 2019. Authorities believe she had been deceased for several weeks before her remains were discovered.

Early on in the investigation, police used facial reconstruction software to recreate what Cole looked like and identify her. Authorities said there had been evidence of a possible fire where she was found, but the circumstances of her death remain under investigation.


This week, authorities in Pennsylvania charged Brandon and Kristie Haas, 38 and 28, with "arrest without prior requisition," giving the state the ability to coordinate extradition to Delaware, according to Delaware Online.

The couple, formerly of Smyrna, currently are considered "persons of interest" in the case.

Facebook posts and court records found by The News Journal indicate Brandon and Kristie Haas were evicted from a home in Smyrna about a mile away from Little Lass Field in Octobert 2019.

The couple reportedly married in 2017 and Indiana court records show Cole is Kristie Haas' daughter.

It's not yet clear where the couple resided in Pennsylvania, but records show Kristie Haas had a home remodeling business, "KBHAAS DESIGNS," registered in Glen Mills, Delaware County, as of August 2020.

Smyrna police have worked with National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and police departments across the region throughout the investigation. They continue to work with the FBI. It's unclear whether the girl ever was reported missing.

"This investigation remains very active, with search warrants being executed, evidence being processed, and interviews being conducted," police said.

Thank goodness this poor sweet innocent girl at least has her name now and a chance for justice.

At least 3 other children are away from that potential harm due to the pretty low chance of them getting out of custody with the high bail amount.

Kristie, Emma's mother, and Brandon Haas married in 2017 and currently have three other children, according to Delaware Online.

I always have a huge issue when a young child's remains are found and it takes any length of time to identify them. In this case someone should have noticed very quickly that Emma was missing like another family member (grandparents, aunts, uncles etc), neighbors, friends of the parents and her bio dad.

Exactly. Usually it turns out to be one child from a home with a CPS history. No siblings, or no/limited extended family to ask questions.

Not a child from a blended family of 6.

Were their excuses for Emma's absence really that convincing? Were they such a "normal" family that NOBODY in Emma's life questioned it?

They must have been. Maybe her bio dad wasn't in the picture but there had to be someone else who noticed. I wonder how old the other children are, like are they old enough that they may have inadvertently mentioned it to someone.

In the article I posted just above, I stated hopefully they wouldn't get released due to the high bail. It says their bail had been set at 1 million dollars.
I'm not sure what happened with that if step dad is already out. It also says that he was let out last week but the earliest articles about the two of them being arrested is only from a week ago.

It's extremely frustrating when there's so many conflicting "facts" written about cases.

Why was he released early? I wonder if it has something to do with the virus being in their jail. That has caused one of our county jails to let people out.

Update: Smyrna couple faces two charges each in child’s death​

A week after seeking a woman and her husband for questioning in connection with her daughter’s death, the couple was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and tampering with physical evidence.


Court records show that former Smyrna residents Kristie L. and Brandon L. Haas were found in Pennsylvania early this month and then extradited to Delaware.

Mr. Haas, 38, was released on $8,000 cash bail Oct. 9.

Ms. Haas, 28, remained in prison Friday, with bail set at $100,000 cash.


Social media posts indicate that Kristie L. Cole married Mr. Haas in May 2017. Indiana court records show that Ms. Cole is the mother of Emma and three other children, whose paternity was established in that state’s court system. Mr. Haas is not their biological father.


Smyrna police arrested Ms. Haas, who was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 7 in Dover on Thursday. A preliminary hearing was set for Jan. 8 in Kent County Court of Common Pleas, according to records.

Mr. Haas was extradited from Pennsylvania and presented before Justice of the Peace Court on Oct. 8, according to court documents. He posted $8,000 in secured bail, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Jan. 22 in the Court of Common Pleas.

Yeahhh maybe after extradition their bail was changed? Because he got out for only $8,000. :mad:

I haven't read all of the articles but is it possible that once arrested, and on interviews/interrogation, they determined the mother is more responsible? And his bond was lowered or he is cooperating? If so, I hope they have it right, and have corroboration, I don't trust he said/she said things....

If that's true, to me, it could be basically like some of the recent autism cases, it isn't the issues that killed the child, it is the parents tired of dealing with it... Possibly...
