Investigators release facial reconstruction of unidentified girl whose remains were found in Delaware

Investigators from the Smyrna Police Department and members of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Delaware Division of Forensic Science to release forensic facial reconstructions they hope will lead to the identification of an unidentified girl whose remains were found near the Little Lass fields on Sept. 13.

Police say the girl was Caucasian or Hispanic, and likely between the ages of 2 and 5 years old. She had slightly wavy brown hair and may have suffered from a chronic illness, based on an anthropological examination of her remains. The child had slightly wavy brown hair, investigators say.

Baby Elle

"Baby Elle" was a girl whose remains were discovered in Smyrna, Delaware in 2019. The child died weeks before she was found, or possibly longer. Little information is available about her death.

The child's remains were discovered in a softball field on the afternoon of September 13, 2019. A man walking his dog came across the remains, which were located directly across from a junior high school. There appeared to be evidence of a fire at the scene, although it has not specified if it was intentionally set or was related to the case.

Police stated they would withhold certain details about the case. They did, however, state that the child may have died earlier than the postmortem interval that was determined.

Dulce Alavez, who disappeared around the time Baby Elle was found, was quickly ruled out as a potential identity. Alavez was abducted days after the discovery of the remains, which effectively made it impossible for them to be the same person.https://unidentified.wikia.org/wiki/Baby_Elle?action=edit

There is only one official rule-out on her NamUs page (a 53-year-old woman). Though authorities have said publicly that she is not Dulce Alavez.

On September 13, 2019 remains of an unidentified child were discovered at the Little Lass baseball fields located on Duck Creek Parkway in Smyrna, Kent County, Delaware. This location is across from the Smyrna Middle and High Schools. The child had been deceased for several weeks, or possibly longer. The child is female, Caucasian or Hispanic, and likely between the ages of 2 to 5 years old. She had light brown, slightly wavy hair. An anthropological exam of her remains suggest that she likely suffered from chronic illness(es). The images displayed are facial reconstructions created by NCMEC Forensic Artists that depict what the child may have looked like in life.

Police were first called to the softball fields, which are across the road from Smyrna Middle School, at about 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 13 after a person who was walking a dog noticed the remains, Delaware Online/The News Journal previously reported.

Though police released little information at the time, they have now said they believe the girl, who was likely Caucasian or Hispanic, was 2 to 5 years old.

Smyrna probe into child’s remains continues

Sep 16th, 2019 · by Craig Anderson · Comments: 1

SMYRNA – Investigators were casting “as wide a net as possible” while searching for clues into last week’s discovery of a child’s remains near the Little Lass softball fields, Smyrna Police said on Monday.

The remains of a child believed to be younger than 10 years old were located by a person walking a dog on Friday afternoon, Smyrna Police spokesman Cpl. Brian Donner said, Smyrna PD asked for the public’s assistance in providing information and reached out to other law enforcement agencies regarding possible missing person cases or investigations that might be connected.

“We’re working to establish a timeline and identity of the victim and then move the investigation forward from there,” he said.

By Monday, all evidence had been collected from the scene next to Duck Creek Parkway and police were working to “restore the area by removing any tarps, tents or other equipment and returning the area to its original state,” Cpl. Donner said.

Said Cpl. Donner, “For the most part the general reaction is that people are as surprised as we are about the situation.”

The Little Lass complex is closed and will reopen on Wednesday. Smyrna Little League will provide baseball field space until then for softball teams to practice.

“Thank you for all the understanding and support during this difficult time,” a Little Lass Facebook post read.

Police received a report of the discovered remains at approximately 4:30 p.m. Besides Smyrna PD detectives, Delaware Attorney General’s Office, Chief Medical Examiner and Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office personnel arrived to investigate.

Cpl. Donner said evidence of a nearby fire were located. More public information would be provided if available, he said.

Police asked anyone with information to possibly assist the case to call Det./Sgt. Brien Street at 653-9217.

Human Remains Of Child Believed To Be Under 10 Discovered At Baseball Field In Smyrna, Police Say
By CBS3 Staff September 14, 2019 at 9:00 pm

SMYRNA, Del. (CBS) — Authorities confirm human remains of a child under 10 years old were discovered at a baseball field in Smyrna. Police say officers responded to the Little Lass Field, located at 1-381 Duck Creek Pkwy, for a report of possible human remains found around 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

Police say the investigation confirmed a body was found in the area of the baseball field. The child is believed to be under 10 years old, according to police.

It’s unclear at this time if the child died at the park or if their remains were brought to there.

A person discovered the body while walking their dog in the park on Friday afternoon, police say.

Authorities say there may have been arson involved with the evidence that was found.

It’s not clear if the child is a boy or a girl.

Police are being assisted by the Delaware Attorney General’s Office, the chief Medical Examiner’s office and the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office.

An investigation remains ongoing.

The Smyrna Clayton Little Lass Softball League said in a statement, “The members of the Smyrna Clayton Little Lass Softball League are heartbroken and deeply saddened by the recent news at our complex. We continue to support law enforcement officials conducting the investigation. Little Lass has and always will be a safe place for young children to play Little League Softball despite this unimaginable incident.”

Anyone with information about the incident is being urged to contact police at 302-653-9217.

Pa. couple arrested in connection with child remains found in Smyrna, police ID girl

More than a year after the remains of a 3-year-old girl were found at a Smyrna softball field complex, a Pennsylvania couple has been arrested.

Police on Thursday identified the girl as Emma Cole. She's believed to have been dead for "several weeks or possibly longer" when she was found.

In connection with Emma's death, Brandon and Kristie Haas were charged in Pennsylvania with “arrest without prior requisition,” which gives authorities the ability to take someone into custody for charges in another state.

The charge allows law enforcement to assist in the extradition of a person to another state.

A Pennsylvania judge set their bond at $1 million, an amount usually reserved for the most serious charges. It's not immediately clear if charges have been filed against the couple in Delaware.

The two, formerly of Smyrna, married in May 2017, according to Facebook posts. Indiana court records show Emma is Kristie's daughter.

Police did not provide further details on the child other than to identify her for the first time publicly on Thursday.

At the time Emma's remains were discovered, the couple lived in a home on North New Street in Smyrna, records show, a little more than a mile from the softball fields.

The couple was evicted from the single-story house in October 2019. Court records show they filed for bankruptcy twice that year due to “consumer debt.”

Her Name Was Emma, She Was 3-Years-Old

Days ago, officials announced that persons of interest, in this case, were in custody out of state. Today Smyrna Police announced that a Pennsylvania couple, Kristie Haas, 28, and Brandon Haas, 38, both are formerly of Smyrna.

The child victim in this case has been preliminarily identified as Emma Cole, 3years of age at the time of her passing.

Police said this investigation remains active and ongoing, and there are no further details to be released at this time. There is no active threat to public safety, officials said Thursday.
