Police search for family of little boy found wandering Florida neighborhood

Police in South Florida are asking for the public's help to find the family of a young boy who was found wandering alone in a Broward County neighborhood.

Miramar police said the child, who appears to be 2 to 3 years old, was seen walking near SW 68 Ave and 18th Street on Sunday morning.

Investigators said officers spent hours canvassing the area and knocking on doors, but said no one recognized the toddler.

Officers are asking anyone who recognizes the boy or has any information on who his parents or guardians are to call Miramar police at 954-602-4000.

Police are searching for parents of a Florida toddler who was found wandering around a neighborhood in a soiled diaper and without shoes

A toddler who was found wandering around a Florida neighborhood in a soiled diaper and without shoes over the weekend has still not been claimed by a parent or guardian, police said Monday morning.

Authorities said officers have been going door-to-door in a bid to locate someone who may know the toddler or his parents are.

She told the station that aside from his diaper being soiled, the toddler looked like he was in good health.

In an update Monday morning, police said: 'His family has NOT been located. Officers spent hours canvassing the area, knocking on doors, speaking w/ neighbors.

'No one recognizes the child,' police said.

Footage of the adorable toddler shows him interacting with police officers at the station and pushing around a chair.

The toddler is now in the custody of Child Protective Services as police continue their investigation.

MEDIA - LEILA CAVETT: Missing from Georgia or Alabama since July 2020 - Age 21 - Son found wandering alone in Miramar, FL

The Hollywood Police Department has taken over the search, following tips that Cavett was possibly seen “near the area of Hollywood Boulevard and US Route 441, a highway that extends from Miami, through the states of Georgia and North Carolina, to Tennessee,” the newspaper continued.

Miramar Police located the missing woman’s car, a mid-to-late ’90s white Chevy Silverado 3500, in Hollywood, the Herald said.

1. Cavett Did Not Have Plans to Visit Florida, Family Members Say

Those close to Cavett confirmed to the Miami Herald that the 21-year-old currently lives in Dawsonville, Georgia — which is about 50 miles north of Atlanta. Her family said she did not have plans to travel to Florida and they don’t know why she was there.

2. The Last Person to Have Contact With Cavett Was Her Grandmother

Cavett’s grandma, Carol Ferdinand, was the final person to communicate with the 21-year-old on July 26 through a Facebook message, CBS Miami reported.

“I think she been snatched up off the streets. She would have never left her baby, never,” said Ferdinand to the station. “She’s my granddaughter, I know her, should we never have left Kamdyn, that’s not her character.”

Family members told CBS Miami that they have been trying to reach Cavett on her cell, but the phone just rings.

3. Cavett Is Single, According to Her Family

Cavett is currently single and does not have a relationship with her son’s father, family members told CBS Miami.

She met Kamdyn’s dad, Daniel Lee West, in Dawsonville two years ago, the Miami Herald said. Cavett was in a relationship with Levi Arnold at the time.

“We were never together; it was just a hookup,” West told the newspaper “Our relationship was about Kamdyn only.”

Arnold, who now lives in Townley, Alabama, filled in as a father figure during the boy’s early days, Lewis disclosed to the Miami Herald. She also confirmed that Cavett is currently single.

West told the Herald that he has stayed in touch with Cavett and his son, even after she moved to Alabama in 2019 and back to Georgia earlier this year.

4. West Is Trying to Get Custody of Kamdyn, Who Is Now in Foster Care

West contacted the Miramar Police Department earlier this week in attempt to claim custody of his son, according to the Miami Herald.

Police told the 35-year-old that he may have to provide proof he is the father, including a DNA test, the newspaper added.

“CPS [the Florida Department of Children and Families] is supposed to tell me what to do. I am coming there as soon as they do,” West told the Herald.

5. Cavett Had Been Arrested on Drug Charges in 2019

The Miami Herald reported that the 21-year-old was living at a friends’ place. Cavett had previously been staying in Dawsonville with her aunt Robin Jenkins until the two got into a “disagreement.”

The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to the newspaper that Cavett was in Dawsonville in February, “when a family member filed a report claiming that Cavett had been using crack cocaine at a residential home.”

She was also arrested in 2019 in Walker County on charges of drugs, according to Alabama court records obtained by the Herald. The newspaper claimed that it was unclear if the case had been settled.

Jasper’s Daily Mountain Eagle reported that Cavett skipped a February court date relating to two traffic tickets, resulting in the suspension of her license in March.

Although Lewis had not known about her sister’s charges, according to the Miami Herald, she believes that Cavett is in trouble.

“I am definitely thinking she is danger, just from how Kamdyn was found,” Lewis told the Herald.

She seemed to be in recent frequent contact with Kamdyn's dad because much of this info has come from him, as to her living with a friend, that the truck was hers, she had it 3/4 weeks and more... As much as one may love their family, just because someone in her family talked to her ten or more days earlier in another state does not mean they know what she may have decided to do on that weekend she ended up in Florida... Nor that she shares everything. She seems to have been in some "flux", was with an aunt, then put out apparently, then with a friend, etc. Charges in Alabama...

The one thing I keep seeing though is absolutely everyone says she would never leave her son or leave him in any such circumstances. That speaks highly of her. I do wonder though if she was between a rock and a hard place, perhaps no money, no place of her own, etc.

I truly thought they would find her by now...

In trying to remind myself what are they not saying, hard to do sometimes, they have confirmed they found her truck but so much more about that NOT being said... Where it was found. How it was found. What was in it when found. What condition it was found in. When it was found... Just that it was found... Period. Did they take it in? One would think so... Or can they without cause? Do they want her or someone (a perp) to hear it was found to hint they are onto them or onto something or get movement...? Just seems pretty quiet about where the truck was found. It is out where she last was seen or pinged was it? Hollywood Boulevard and 441... But NOT where the truck was found...

Well, this article said the truck was found in the Walmart parking lot and it is from ABC so I guess legitimate source. However, it is the only place I have seen that. I have seen her last known location as 441 and Hollywood but not that that is where they located the truck. So who knows.... Sigh... On the bright side, Walmart and cameras... However, that is the very reason I thought they would have an answer by now... Florida has a lot of toll roads, a lot of cameras, etc...

the quality of what the cameras would show, highly depends on how far away the truck was parked from one and the actual quality of the cameras and how many cameras were able to pick up different angles. If somebody just dropped off the truck and left, they might not have good enough footage to be able to get much info other than if she was with that person or not. It will give them some info, but maybe not much.

I tend to doubt it is the only but I do see your point. Major intersection and looking at the map probably a ton of businesses with cameras. May take some time. And not only her vehicle but who she met IF she met someone...

I wish I could remember the case but there was a case once before even cameras were known to be so what they are at Walmart now, I think, but did exist and they had a lot of video and they were close, even adjoining businesses but did not think a jury could maybe quite decide it was who it was... And lo and behold, it was found almost by accident that one of the vending machines outside the store had a camera... NOT common knowledge, not to LE not to anyone. And while it did not shoot the parking lot, it had a view of someone that fit with the other info they had... For the life of me, I can't remember which case, some time ago and I am going to guess I saw it on something like cold case files or some such or ID, etc. that kind of thing. They had him but felt they needed just one more clinch of it... To feel solid in the case...

So back from sidetracking, I am going to guess these departments KNOW what likely happened, who or if anyone/perp, but need to put it all together...? Cell phones, cameras, toll roads, another vehicle if someone met her, etc...? Inside the store...?

It seems that walmart is a hotspot for lurking creeps... My notion on this idea comes from watching the show "See No Evil". I've seen many of the video investigations include Walmart video footage- of people (women in particular) becoming a target at Walmart and then met with foul play after being followed away from the store.
Alternatively, this could be a result of Walmart having so many accessible cameras that provides footage for the show... so..
Out of curiosity I have tried to research if there are statistics on the number of people who's have gone missing or were met with foul play after visiting Walmart. I didn't find much...

Family Believes Missing Mother Came to Florida to Meet Someone

The family of a missing mother whose toddler was found alone in South Florida is saying they believe the 21-year-old could have been with a man she was in communication with online.

Leila Cavett's father and grandfather told NBC 6 the man messaged her on Facebook to come down to Florida for the weekend and that he possibly sent her money. Curtis Cavett said he knows his daughter sells clothes and other items on Facebook's Marketplace. Police have not confirmed these details.

There sure seem to be a lot of Walmart video crimes.. One would think perps would know better. I can think to the Patrick Frazee/Kelsey Berreth case though and it seemed to me he used Walmart video thinking dumbly it would help him establish an alibi... I don't know but I know this much, it is a very common place to meet whether selling something or someone being able to find it easily in any city OR to feel safe on camera...?

There are hints elsewhere of her maybe meeting someone. Whether from selling things or putting some faith in someone she was talking to and meeting him... Her brother (elsewhere) said almost immediately they were kidnapped... It plays back to a lot said in the beginning that she made sure Kamdyn was safe over her being safe... It is getting difficult to believe they don't know yet--and maybe LE does but they just do not have what they need...

True.. Walmart is a very common meeting place and they are plentiful... you can find a Walmart pretty much within a 30 mile radius of most towns.

and the sheer volume of people that go there, especially when traveling and need something.

I know people who sell as Leila apparently did. It is very common as a meeting place just for that. Cameras, broad daylight. Safety. But if that was the case, she must have had some big profit to make it worth driving that huge truck that far...? AND back? On the same hand if you want to disappear, good place to last be seen because you know there are cameras and then have your vehicle found elsewhere...

Hard to say but I truly thought they would have this figured out by now but then again, they probably know and are trying to get that last piece...?

I think people would be horribly upset at her if she disappeared by choice but I hope she is safe. I however in this one do not feel she likely is. Just where I am leaning. I think she may have as is thought by some found a way to give her son a chance of being safe while she knew she was not...?

ETA: By trusting or meeting the wrong person...

I don't believe so. About 15 miles away.

The vehicle last driven by a mother whose toddler was found abandoned in a Miramar, Florida, parking lot has been recovered about 15 miles away from there.

I am not sure the truck was found at the Walmart... I think a news article or two assumed that? She was last seen at the Walmart was the way I understand it and the truck found somewhere in Hollywood, FL... I did read it myself that it was found at the Walmart but I still think they may have assumed that (the media source) because when I google Walmart at that intersection to the address given of where he was found on and map it, it is 2.1 miles? I don't want to assume media is wrong but it does happen... If correct, they seem to have the miles wrong...

OOooh okay. I thought I had heard 2 miles but then the articles I found said 15.

So @kdg411 I was not correct. Not 15 miles, closer to 2 miles. But yeah I still don't think he would have wandered that far without someone seeing him.
Lol don't take my word for it but I did take the actual addresses given and use my very poor mapping skills... I do think there are parts of Miramar to Hollywood that are closer to 15 miles... But this child as you say could not have walked that far, even the 2 miles, there could never be not one good samaritan that would have seen him and done something about it I would hope.
