Lyrik Brown, 3 months old, was last seen around 9 p.m. Monday in the 700 block of North Howeth Street in Gainesville, according to the alert issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety. She was wearing a yellow onesie with hearts and flowers, according to the alert. She has a birthmark behind her right knee.

Jeremy Brown, 30, was last seen wearing khaki shorts, a black T-shirt with Chicago Bulls decal and black and white Nike shoes. He was driving a gray 2011 Volkswagen Jetta with a Texas license plate with the number 55432B6.

Police Chief Kevin Phillips said Lyrik was last seen around 9 o'clock Monday night in the 700 block of Howeth Street following an altercation between her mother, 18-year-old Karina Ortiz, and her boyfriend, identified as Jeremy Brown, 30.

Ortiz told police she had been riding in gray 2011 Volkswagen Jetta with Brown when she was allegedly assaulted by him.

Oh NO. Just seeing this. Why??? And of course he survives. People that choose to take the life of a child are the worst to me! I hate it when they kill themselves but the ones who SURVIVE but kill the child really, really ROYALLY tick me off. Enough guts to kill an innocent but when it comes to their own arse, no they can't harm themselves, they MATTER more than their child... I was hopeful as I figured he was the parent or a relative. My granddaughter was 3 months and his sentencing is coming up after three long years so this news really bothers me as this beautiful child was three months. Stopping there.

Father charged after missing Texas infant found dead in submerged vehicle

The father of a 4-month-old Texas girl who was found dead Tuesday in a submerged car has been charged with capital murder.

Authorities discovered the body of Lyrik Aliyana Brown, who was the subject of an AMBER Alert, still in her car seat in an overturned vehicle submerged in the Red River, which runs along the border of Texas and Oklahoma.

Brown is accused of abducting Lyrik after getting into an argument with his girlfriend, Lyrik’s mother, KTVT reports. Brown’s girlfriend reportedly told police Monday that the two got into a physical altercation during the argument and he drove away with the child still buckled into her seat in the back.

Brown is being held without bond at the Cooke County Detention Center in Gainesville.

Headline is a bit misleading. Looks like she did drown in the car. It just took them several hours to get to her.

Affidavit: Infant likely died hours before being found

Law enforcement believe 16-week-old Lyrik Aliyana Brown had been dead for hours before her body was retrieved from the Red River on Tuesday, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by the Register.

Law enforcement records state that the vehicle's condition indicates it had been driven into a stationary object at a “relatively substantial speed” before entering the river and coming to rest on its roof, completely submerged. The Jetta had extensive front end damage.

The affidavit states there was no evidence to suggest the infant’s 30-year-old father, Jeremy Brown, had attempted to rescue her.

At 3:41 p.m. Tuesday, a witness saw Jeremy Brown underneath the I-35 bridge on the south bank of the Red River, according to the affidavit.

Jeremy Brown talked to the witness and during the conversation he said he had wrecked his vehicle, was stuck at the river with his daughter and needed to borrow a cellphone.

Jeremy Brown reportedly called his ex-girlfriend and during that conversation, the affidavit alleges, he denied having his daughter and claimed to have been in a car crash.

The girlfriend, according to the affidavit, immediately contacted GPD to relay the location of Jeremy Brown.

The information was passed on to the CCSO and multiple surrounding agencies responded to the scene.

Previous Register reports state GPD personnel arrived at 3:51 p.m.

When first responders arrived to the scene, Jeremy Brown was in the water near the southern bank of the Red River. As deputies and officers approached, Jeremy Brown began swimming closer to the middle of the river, according to law enforcement.

“As he reached a location further north of the river bank, he grabbed onto a vehicle that was clearly submerged in the river,” the affidavit states. “Attempts were made to communicate with the defendant to determine the location of the child but the defendant refused to advise where she was at.”

The affidavit states Jeremy Brown resisted arrest when deputies tried to detain him. He had to be subdued and handcuffed, court records state. He also reportedly “made the Res Gestae statement that he forgot she was in the car.”

The vehicle was retrieved and that's when officials found Lyrik Brown's body still in the back of the Jetta.

The body was taken to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas for an autopsy.

Court records show the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office reported to law enforcement that Lyrik Brown had been dead for hours — likely since sometime overnight.

Gilbert said Wednesday, June 10, that the cause of her death was drowning. However, the manner of her death was still pending, he said.

Court records show that Jeremy Brown had talked multiple times in the past about wrecking his vehicle into something to take his own life, had tried to kill himself at least once by driving into a stationary object and had on at least one previous occasion assaulted a former girlfriend by trying to drown her in the Red River near the bridge.

The Gainesville man has a long criminal history dating back to 2009 which includes charges of engaging in organized criminal activity, possession or delivery of drug paraphernalia, firearm smuggling and aggravated assault, Cooke County Jail records indicate.

Jeremy Brown was served a warrant Wednesday for capital murder of a child under 10 years of age, Gilbert said. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.

Brown's bonds for the murder and assault charge total $1.25 million, jail records showed Thursday, June 11. It’s unclear whether Brown has an attorney.

I do not entirely get this. Did they not try to retrieve her as they knew she had been in there too long already? What am I missing?

Yeah, I'm not sure. The article isn't written clearly. It certainly makes it sound like the vehicle wasn't searched or retrieved until after JB was apprehended and booked.

They absolutely should have gone in right away. Still would have likely been too late to save her. But to wait hours? Negligent.

Maybe because when he called her mom he said she wasn't with him? They also say, “Attempts were made to communicate with the defendant to determine the location of the child but the defendant refused to advise where she was at.” BUT when they were trying to detain him...he also said "he forgot she was in the car.” No idea the timeline of what really happened here and why.

A timeline would help clear it up some for sure. Confusing.

and cause of death is drowning, but likely died hours before being found
Yeah, one would think that would clear it up, but it makes it more confusing. I wonder if they knew somehow the car had been submerged for some time...? I don't see how though as it appears the first they knew was when his gf called police. I imagine more will become clear in the coming days, one can hope.

That's what i am wondering.

New details released in murder of Gainesville infant

An affidavit obtained by News 12 Wednesday revealed new details in the death of a 3-month-old baby in Gainesville, leaving the child’s father facing capital murder charges.

According to the affidavit, Jeremy Brown assaulted the mother of 3-month-old Lyrik Brown the night of June 8 before taking off with the baby still inside the car while the mother pleaded with him not to take her.

Gainesville police issued an Amber Alert due to the domestic dispute and Brown’s previous suicide attempts.

Five minutes later, Brown called a Gainesville Municipal Court Judge and told him he planned to commit suicide.

Around 3 p.m. the next day, a witness spotted Brown under the I-35 Red River Bridge. Brown told the witness he had wrecked his car and was stranded with his daughter, and needed to borrow a phone.

Brown used the phone to call his ex-girlfriend to say he was in a car accident, but denied having his daughter with him. She immediately called Gainesville police.

When police arrived they found Brown swimming in the middle of the river, grabbing onto the submerged car.

Court documents say deputies asked Brown where the child was, but he wouldn’t answer. So they waded in and arrested him.

As deputies were arresting Brown, he told them he forgot his daughter was in the car.

Deputies found Lyrik still strapped in her car seat. Investigators mention in the affidavit there were no signs Brown made any attempts to save her. A medical examiner said she likely drowned sometime overnight before Brown made contact with the witness.

Man sentenced to life in prison for killing 3-month-old daughter

A man sentenced to life in prison Friday for killing his 3-month-old daughter in 2020.

Jeremy Brown, 30, was sentenced to life in prison for murder and assault family violence.

”They’re never going to get Lyrik back, but I think that knowing that he’s gonna be out of the community, I think they’re satisfied with that. Same thing for us I think that he was a really bad guy that didn’t need to be in our community and not only this crime, but many other crimes that he committed. He was dangerous and we’re glad he’s going to be off the streets,” said Eric Erlandson, First Assistant District Attorney

Brown will serve his sentence in state prison and is eligible for parole after 30 years.

“He will be eligible for parole but that doesn’t mean he will ever make parole and we certainly hope on a case like this he won’t make parole,” said Erlandson.

Brown was indicted in 2020 for capital murder, punishable by the death penalty. The jury found him guilty and sentenced him on a lesser charge of murder, still a first degree felony, and assault family violence.
