‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

Entin is reporting search and rescue are going door to door near Nancy's home. Interesting. Maybe she's not far from home at all...

I think the whole ransom demand threw this investigation into a sidetrack.

It definitely doesn't look like somebody that is comfortable with doing this or like there was much preplanning.

Definitely leaning to it being a scammer on the ransom.

Most burglars don't carry guns. There is a HUGE difference in sentencing for burglary and armed burglary. This guy was bringing the gun to intimidate her, IMO. I think someone wanted her dead for some reason. The blood evidence may be due to a gunshot?

Just spitballing here: Does Ashley's insinuation about the son in law have meaning? It probably wasn't for a ransom. They may have wanted her to disappear for a while and then have her body eventually found so death could be declared and divvying up her will would start.

The ransom demand may have been a blessing in disguise. Since there was a kidnapping theory associated, rather than a murder.

Not trolling. Just can't believe grown people didn't know that other countries dollars are worth different in different countries, especially when it specifically states USD.
I'm ignoring your posts or trying to but are you really going to keep trying to insult people and pick something?

Can we focus on an elderly woman who is missing?

Instead of USD and basements and sidetracking?

Please.

I think everybody on here understands different currencies. You are preaching to the converted here.

I have two theories. The more sensible one is this. Nancy is is in bed and wakes up. Maybe she heard the masked man. Maybe she had to pee. Maybe she suddenly remembered she had forgotten to take her daily medication and decides to go to the kitchen to take the meds. Whatever. She hears noises and opens the door to investigate noises or see who is standing there. She thinks she recognizes the person or their voice and asks what they are doing. Intruder panics.

We don't know if there was forced entry or not.
We do know that he was aware of the camera and then took it. Evidently he didn't know that he was already recorded on it, which makes me convinced he's not a person that is used to doing this.

It's obvious some don't by their comments about there not being any difference. Specifically stating that there is no difference between USD and Canadian dollars tells me that all by itself.

As possible as anything. Just don't know why an intruder or robber would take her right back to near Annie's neighborhood. Of course that is IF what is going on now means anything like she isn't near her own home, hard to say.

what is your other theory, that one is certainly possible.

I was leaning towards the SIL but I hate that Banfield outed that, but it's been hard to get off the mind and they do seem to center over that way a lot. After these pics/video, I thought okay, that's not him I don't think. I was actually relieved as it would be so hard for others in the family to find out it was family but it also scared me even more for Nancy.

However, there definitely could be more than one person involved here...

With the ransom, I couldn't decide if hoax or not but still thought it might work with the SIL. Either a way to distract the investigation and family and/or to get some money.

I've never been at a positive or hard leaning though. I was over the 50 percent mark however. I thought wrong when I saw the pics, now they are back in that neighborhood and I think right... My head is like a pendulum lol.

most out there think this will break wide open here shortly.

We all have the right to change our minds based on new thoughts or new evidence.

My latest theory is that it's someone who skis, and has skied for a long time. They mention his mask isn't used anymore by skiers. So, I'm guessing he's had that for a long time, since buying new ones seems impossible.

Will this jog anyone's memories on this?
How do you think he got there? Surely he wouldn't have driven wearing all that gear. I was thinking about a motor bike.

I think the kidnapping notes could be anything, a distraction, even from him or a partner, or LE using it to distract the public and media which didn't entirely work.

I will NEVER be okay with what Ashleigh did but that doesn't mean what she said has no basis. AND they have come back to that area a LOT, even now. And their home. Some of course could be explained as of course LE goes to that home as it is where the family is at, etc.

Yes, there is probably the will and assets but not sure how much Nancy would have as opposed to what Savanna could pay. Maybe playing both angles?

I never name him as I don't think it's fair although it is clear who is meant here.

I still tend to lean towards his/their involvement but again am not okay with what Ashleigh did at all. Imo she interfered with what was probably a strategy and whoever was leaking should be canned. IF it even has a basis and she really had a source. I've been so back and forth on her these past years, mostly against. But was starting to like her again. She just can't RESIST.
