‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

I'm leaning to him coming to rob the house and Nancy woke up. He came with a backpack. My friend was robbed and they filled a backpack, which was later found in their vehicle. Nancy waking up was why things drastically changed. And I'm still of the assumption that the ransom money was from some foreign scammer trying to make a buck on the internationally known case.

This is my assumption for today. I reserve the right to change my mind as new evidence comes to light.

We all have the right to change our minds based on new thoughts or new evidence.

My latest theory is that it's someone who skis, and has skied for a long time. They mention his mask isn't used anymore by skiers. So, I'm guessing he's had that for a long time, since buying new ones seems impossible.

Will this jog anyone's memories on this?

There are places to ski in Arizona.
There are. About three areas through the state. I'm going to emphasize I said areas, NOT ski resorts, etc. Tucson itself has one I think.

My uncle lived there among other relatives, one who still does. He always said he could have any season within about 1/2 hour away all year round. Also if miss the ocean, just a short drive to CA. He was born and raised in the midwest but AZ became his home. Also had an aunt in Tucson. The uncle was her brother, he lived near Sedona.

AZ also does have water, more than just the well known spots, more than some realize. A lot of desert though.

I got his love of it, I love AZ. My second football team is the Cardinals.

Nitrile gloves tend to "stick" to your skin and don't usually appear to "hover " over the skin. Especially if you are perspiring in even the slightest bit. Especially the back of the had when balled up into a fist like it shows on that first pic posted on here.
They might be, but they would have to be huge ones to still be puffed out from the back of the hand. The xl ones don't even do that on my hands.
Ok.

It definitely doesn't look like somebody that is comfortable with doing this or like there was much preplanning.

Definitely leaning to it being a scammer on the ransom.

It's VERY common for thieves to carry a backpack.

I don't doubt they are already getting tips to no end and know more than we think, even before they released the images.

it very well could be a skiier but he wasn't dressed due to going skiing at 2 a.m.ish that night of course. He was dressed to cover prints and be in disguise.

And yes, of course, all can change opinions based on what they learn. We don't know what LE knows.

My way is to rush hear and report breaking news before I've even looked at it much or listened to it, to let everyone know when all care a lot about this case and this woman. Then I go back later when time and really watch and let it sink in.

My first glimpses on the phone screen of someone at NBC were the same but I thought he was bald with the first glimpse, then rushed here.

Anyhow yeah... Changing all of the time. I've never been sold on anything in this one totally.

Oh now I'm hearing cops are going door to door everywhere in Annie's neighborhood... Maybe it was Annie's, not Nancy's. I've had to do some things, going to go listen closer.

Being said something major is going on.

Didn't you ask me yesterday why I was still on your tweets that had no solid basis were still what I was on? Why are you still on USD on a ransom with all of the new news? Or basements?

Respectfully asking?

Hardly what is mattering right now.

The Guthrie family does not recognize the person seen in new surveillance video released publicly today, according to reporting from NBC.

This is why the FBI and sheriff’s office decided to post the video, NBC said.

Savannah Guthrie posted the images of the person on her Instagram earlier, writing in the caption that she believes her mother is still alive
I don't believe even his own mother would recognise him in that video.

Mind changing is okay in cases imo. I feel have a meter in my head, like a kitchen scale and it goes up in numbers or down in numbers on my theories as to percentages though of likeliness.

We can only update what we think with new news, we certainly don't know what LE knows.

It's when all facts prove any of us wrong and we can't admit it or change with new information, well then that's just bullheadedness.

That's how I look at cases anyhow.

The thing is, I was kind of leaning your way or close to it, but they seem to be again searching near Annie and hub's neighborhood...

I have two theories. The more sensible one is this. Nancy is is in bed and wakes up. Maybe she heard the masked man. Maybe she had to pee. Maybe she suddenly remembered she had forgotten to take her daily medication and decides to go to the kitchen to take the meds. Whatever. She hears noises and opens the door to investigate noises or see who is standing there. She thinks she recognizes the person or their voice and asks what they are doing. Intruder panics.

We don't know if there was forced entry or not.
