Texas teen missing since Christmas Eve believed to be in 'imminent danger': Sheriff

A Texas teen who has been missing since Christmas Eve was last seen leaving her home that morning and is believed to be in "imminent danger," law enforcement officials said on Sunday.

An unidentified person believed to be 19-year-old Camila Mendoza Olmos was captured on security video around 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday searching her vehicle for an unidentified item, according to a statement from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators said they believe Mendoza Olmos left the residence on foot since her vehicle remained there and that the only items she took with her were her car keys and possibly her driver's license.

Her last known location was the 11000 block of Caspian Spring in northwest Bexar County, the sheriff's office said.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar told ABC News on Sunday that sheriff's deputies and volunteers have been searching around the clock for Mendoza Olmos.

Multiple agencies have joined the search, including the FBI, which is providing technical assistance, and the Department of Homeland Security, which is monitoring border crossings and international travel, Salazar said.

"We definitely don't want to miss anything," Salazar said. "The ground search is somewhat limited to a couple of square miles. We're also not ruling out that this case may take us outside the borders of the continental United States."

Salazar said investigators have not ruled anything out in the teenager's disappearance, including kidnapping, human trafficking and the potential she left on her own accord.

Salazar said Mendoza Olmos recently went through a romantic breakup, but authorities said the breakup was mutual and don't suspect anything "nefarious" was involved, saying everyone close to her is cooperating.

"Camila’s mother stated that Camila normally goes for a morning walk; however, she became concerned when Camila did not return within a reasonable period of time," according to the sheriff's office.

Salazar confirmed that Mendoza Olmos was not detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), despite her being a U.S. citizen.

"That was a personal concern. So, I had it checked to make sure that there were no stops, no detentions, and that she's not somewhere in a federal detention facility. That is something we needed to check," Salazar said.

Salazar noted that it was unusual for Mendoza Olmos to leave her phone at home, saying she leads an active lifestyle and it's "highly unusual" that she hasn’t returned.

"That's why we're working basically around the clock on this case," Salazar said.

While Salazar would not disclose some details of Mendoza Olmos's disappearance, he said there is enough information to suggest she is in "imminent danger."

Salazar requested help from the community in the search, asking neighbors of Mendoza Olmos to check their surveillance cameras for any footage of the teenagers.

There isn't any talking until the last 6, 7 minutes but there is a lot of emergency vehicles coming when live throughout, traffic, people showing up, etc. Again I've forwarded through a fair amount of it but it is the actual scene. She is not shown, nothing at all like that, but the unfolding activities are, etc.

Unfortunately because depression is a horrible uncontrollable monster. She didn't think there was any other option. I'm so absolutely gutted for her family (if this is confirmed to be their beautiful girl) and I know how they will feel.

I'm a bit confused about the body being found in an area that had already been searched. I would assume if this is her that she would have been gone fairly early in the search so I'm just not understanding how she was missed the first time.
Also, if a gun was indeed used didn't anyone hear it go off? We live a few miles from a military base and the gunshots from there are clearly heard here.
Also....I didn't hear anything about her even having access to a gun until the body was found so you're definitely not alone there.
Gutted is such a perfect word for it. In this and other cases. Going to remember that one because it describes it so well.

I don't quite get it either. She cut through it is sounding like on the one I am watching back closer to home or some such.

Or do you think she was alive longer and then ended up there?

Good point about hearing a gun but in the video I am watching, man the traffic alone and the noise... Is not like anywhere I've ever lived and I live in a city, albeit not the biggest one.

But I hear sirens, guns, fireworks, wind, dogs, and so on so yeah good point...

Yes never heard about a gun. Until all this was breaking. But then I don't follow SM with FB, Instagram, etc, maybe it came from there, I wouldn't know.

Also heard who she likely got or took the gun from and yeah, if I'd known that as even a follower or as her parent, I'd be a lot more worried.

Anyhow the link I posted is a lot of minutes of emergency vehicles, people walking and showing up, traffic, etc. A bit of a talk at the end but not much.

But it was at the scene.

The body has not yet been officially identified and a cause and manner of death have not yet been determined by the local medical examiner, Salazar said.

"We hope that we can try to expedite that process to be able to get the community answers," he said.

Salazar noted there were some indicators of self-harm.

A firearm was located at the scene where the body was found, Salazar said. A firearm belonging to a relative of Mendoza Olmos' has been missing, he said. Authorities have not yet determined if the missing firearm is a match for the one observed at the scene, he said.

very similar to what i've been hearing. although i didn't know one was missing through most of this. can't blame them for not sharing that though.

if these younger folk knew there is life beyond what you think may be something that is so bad that you can't overcome, you CAN... I haven't forgotten that age but I know it does take learning that not all is the end of the world. but who knows these days what they think...

i only know this is very sad and she had a whole life in front of her but must not have thought she did. or who knows...

Brian Entin. This starts off with a bit about Camila Mendoza. It then goes i nto Sydney Marquez also missing from Texas. I think maybe we should do a thread on her?? She was in Houston i think visiting friends and had a hotel room. There is video of her heading back to her hotel but apparently she turned the wrong way. Also her car was found, having had mechanical issues, she left it in the right lane of a boulevard and started walking. They have her phone from her hotel room (why was it left there?) and what is really maddening is her parents cannot get into her phone into the cloud or something because when they try it sends a code to her old phone number that they NEED to get in, and someone has her old phone number now, some stranger being given her old number when it was retired I guess, and that person wants $1,000 for the code!! WTF? Texas Equusearch is involved. Said its extortion basically. It is just a text they get with a code for goodness sakes, a girl is missing, GIVE the code to the parents!!! Anyhow here, on Sydney, from Brian, after a bit about Camila.

Seems like suicidal thoughts are most likely why she was sleeping with Mom Too bad mom didn't get up with her. Not blaming Mom in any way, shape or form though.

I think what they call suicidal tendencies/expressions were more than we know or will ever know. She supposedly was pretty devoted to her religion. Allegedly recently baptized. I wonder if that was in hopes of helping to keep her from such.

Her mother is on camera totally breaking down. I didn't expect to see such. Heartbreakingly sad.

The sheriff said there were troubles at work, school, in life. It seems as if there are messages that were really worrisome. I don't want to know and doubt we ever will.

This girl had her whole life ahead of her and its just so awful.

I hope the other one I mentioned above doesn't end the same way but there are some worrisome things in that one as well.

For anyone that may not have heard, a gun was found near her. I'm assuming the gun will end up matching the family member's gun that was missing.

I am still not convinced.... how come she wasn't found before. that area was searched already... I also am not convinced that it was her by the car.... there is more behind all this.... in case it is her who they found

they did say there were varying descriptions of her clothing. i agree the area was searched before and they said that too and that they decided to research it due to long grass and it being private property or some such they couldn't just search freely or some such.

i'm not suspecting foul play here but i can see why anyone would wonder. and that recently released cam footage was i think definitely not her. I'd say. she seemed to have chosen to leave her phone at home, off, uncharged. i do suspect there's more we don't know in the way of issues she was having maybe, and who with, if anyone.

i'd also agree they haven't shared enough yet to be sure of anything.

Olmos' mother, Nancy, told police she grew worried when her daughter didn't return to her San Antonio-area home after her normal early morning walk.

The family found her cellphone turned off in her bedroom, her mother said.

Security camera video showed a person matching Olmos looking inside her car for an unidentified item before the clip from the neighbor's home camera ended. Another video provided by someone's dash camera appeared to show Olmos walking by herself on the side of a road, which authorities said gave them a direction of where she may have gone.

It often happens but also possibly she had not committed suicide at the point it was searched and was still contemplating. it also could have been it wasn't searched very well.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the body as Olmos on Wednesday, determining the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and ruling the manner of death a suicide, according to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.

The body appeared to have been in the location where it was found for several days, according to authorities.

If you look at the property on a satellite view, you can see how they possibly missed her. The property is huge with a lot of equipment parked all over and piles of mulch, rock, etc. Not a stretch that they missed her in an initial search. I'm not able to post a screen shot of the entire property, but it's Burning Bush Landscaping San Antonio, Tx.

I'm not suspecting foul play in this. It's hard to want to believe someone this young, seemingly vibrant and caring, could do something like this but I feel all signs indicate she did. Thus far. I didn't know there were people suspecting the boyfriend, I guess ex bf until I heard it on here (below). He usually does videos on those he thinks guilty but here he felt compelled to do one for the opposite reason, that the bf showed no signs of deception and didn't use distancing behavior or talk for instance. It is what it is but I always find his takes on cases interesting.

They kept the fact she took a gun with her from the public and I think right there that's a pretty big red flag. I've heard others say she took the driver's license with her so she could be identified most likely (if she took such, that was always kind of an unsure item). It seems to all tell of planning, including leaving the phone behind.

I've heard other experts say sometimes suicidal people can seem happier in their last day/s as they've made their decision and that makes a sad kind of sense. She was also said to have been giving kind of good byes to loved ones right beforehand, making sure they knew she loved them for instance.

I'm not sure what spurred them to recheck this area, they said it wasn't searched completely they felt the first time or as well as it could have been and maybe I am guessing they felt having not found much video of her which there should have been had she truly walked far along any street...? They also said it was private property of course so a full on search wasn't done at first or something like that.

Anyhow I think it all adds up so far. I have more questions about the TX A & M student back some weeks ago than I do in this one.

This one is short but if anyone is wondering about the bf, he addresses that. I like his takes on cases.
