Nick Reiner, 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder after the deaths of his parents, Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his producer wife Michele Reiner.
The bodies of the celebrated couple, who were 78 and 68 respectively, were found at their home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, on 14 December.
Their son was arrested in Los Angeles the same day and made his first court appearance on 17 December, waving his right to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty on the charge of murdering his parents.
Rob Reiner, who was known for directing movies such as This Is Spinal Tap and When Harry Met Sally, had two sons and a daughter with his wife of 36 years.
Here is what we know about Nick Reiner, their younger son, and the investigation so far.

What happened?

The couple's youngest child, daughter Romy, found their bodies in their home in Brentwood, a celebrity enclave full of mansions, boutique shops and restaurants on the west side of Los Angeles, multiple sources confirmed to the BBC's US news partner CBS News.
The Reiners had suffered multiple stab wounds, CBS reported. Their cause of death has not officially been released.
The charges faced by Nick Reiner also include a "special allegation" that he "used a dangerous and deadly weapon, that being a knife".
US outlets reported that he and his father had attended a party the previous evening, and engaged in an argument of some kind. Reports vary as to the severity of the alleged row.

LAPD: Nick Reiner "booked for murder"
Nick Reiner is in custody without bail since his arrest on 14 December.
District attorney Nathan Hochman has said Mr Reiner is facing two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance alleging multiple murders. He could be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole or the death penalty if convicted.
Unconfirmed speculation about a possible motive has appeared on social media. In comments that have spurred condemnation from both sides of the political aisle, President Donald Trump linked Rob Reiner's death to what he calls "Trump derangement syndrome", a term he often uses to describe his critics.

However, no motive for the killings has yet been alleged by prosecutors.

What happened during his first court appearance?

During a brief court hearing on 17 December, the defendant only said "yes, your honour" when asked by Judge Theresa McGonigle if he understood he had the right to a speedy trial.
His arms looked bare. His face looked blank.
He was wearing what appeared to be a suicide prevention vest sometimes used to restrain people in custody in LA.
Nick Reiner is being represented by celebrity defence lawyer Alan Jackson, who also represented disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein in his Los Angeles rape case.
The next hearing will be 7 January.

The family openly discussed Nick Reiner's long struggles with substance abuse ahead of the release of his semi-autobiographical 2015 film Being Charlie. The father and son had teamed up to write and direct the film about a teenager addicted to drugs and his difficult road to recovery.
Rob and Michele Reiner said that they had felt desperate during their son's struggles, but when he would tell them that a rehab programme was not working, they did not always listen and took the word of the professionals treating their son. He was in and out of rehab centres for years and experienced homelessness as a teenager.
"We were so influenced by these people. They would tell us he's a liar, that he was trying to manipulate us. And we believed them," Michele told the Los Angeles Times, external in 2015.

Rob added: "We listened to them when we should have been listening to our son."
The film appeared to provide healing for the family. Rob said that by the time they started making the movie, their relationship "had gotten so much closer".
Likewise, Nick Reiner told Variety, external at the time that their relationship grew during the process. Although he loved working with his dad on the film, he added that he wanted to be independent and complete his own projects.

A few years later they had their first son, Jake
In a 1998 interview with the BBC, before their daughter Romy was born, the director reflected on parenthood. He said his approach was changing, and through his experiences with his young sons, he was "learning about being a parent".
That same year, he helped pass an initiative to use revenue from cigarette taxes for prenatal and early childhood support programme called First Five California.
"I'm trying to improve the fabric of society by making an investment early on with children, so that we will have a reduction in crime and teen pregnancy and drug abuse and child abuse," he said.

I've never heard of waiving a plea of guilty or not guilty. Huh?.

I heard that it was put off as it was said he needed more time to decide on a plea. I don't think he waived it. Not sure which is correct. If you stand mute, a judge generally enters one for you so I doubt they can waive it. Maybe he waived speedy trial or something else but I don't think he waived anything.

You're right GBear. It was Conan's party.
Yeah, I heard that this morning on something too. I thought I was right but just wasn't 100 percent on it. I guess different accounts have come from the party and the family is pushing back on I think that there was an argument (him an dad). Earlier I heard, and I had heard this before, he was asking A listers a series of three questions, the same 3 for everyone and one was "are you a celebrity?" when everyone there is. I also heard he supposedly tried to horn into a conversation someone was having and had to be told it was a private conversation and then he supposedly flipped out or went off over being told that...

Most seem to think he was being intentionally obnoxious and insulting with the questions. He could I suppose be absolutely totally lacking in appropriate social skills.

This is supposedly THE Christmas party of the year every year, the one everyone WANTS to be invited to or some only hope to. That and the way he was dressed at a very formal affair probably DO equate to intentionally obnoxiousness. No one can be THAT clueless and he was raised around celebrity.

Dr. G who a lot of us have listened to watches the interview of Rob and Nick about the movie they did together. He is only expression his opinion and he finds Nick to be very socially awkward several times in it, uncomfortable, etc. There is more too like what he senses about their relationship

I wondered about social awkwardness but I had nothing to go on to think it until watching Nick in this either.

I did say he was either being intentionally obnoxious at the party or he is socially awkward and doesn't know how to converse with others. Doesn't get social cues, etc.

Here it is if anyone is interested. I found what he said and saw interesting.

And Youtube is great for a lot of things. Here is the full movie. Free. I haven't watched it yet but intend to. I've got to get to bed, big day tomorrow. Thought I'd link it for everyone else in the meantime though.

Yeah. He's awkward. I find him creepy, and unsettling.

He waived his right to plea. Maybe it will end up an insanity plea is what I am thinking. Like the sheriff who shot the judge is trying to get.

I watched the interview. So he would have been about 22 at the time?

He is socially awkward and it occurs to me he could be autistic. So this interview took place about 10 years ago? He is not comfortable in the interview at all. He is reminding me a bit of the Idaho killer.

Yeah he killed in the same way as the ID killer too. Slashing and stabbing.

I agree, very awkward. I tried to give the benefit of the doubt at first figuring he was not as comfortable in public or in such an interview as his dad but as the interview went on, it's pretty obvious--the social awkwardness I too think he could have autism or something else going on that lends to that.

I think the waiving his right to a plea was misreporting. The arraignment was put off for three weeks to early January. The need to plea was just postponed, not waived. That's what I heard from most yesterday.
