Got my Masters degree from here. :(

Killer who stabbed 4 Idaho students to death still at large

The killer — or killers — who stabbed four University of Idaho students to death remained at large Tuesday, prompting many students to leave the campus in the idyllic small town despite police assurances that there was no imminent risk to the community.

So many students had left the scenic tree-lined campus in Moscow, Idaho, by Tuesday that university officials said a candlelight vigil scheduled for the next day would instead be held after the Thanksgiving break.

The students, all close friends, were found dead in an off-campus rental home around noon on Sunday, and officials said they likely were killed several hours earlier. Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt told the Spokane, Washington-based television station KXLY that her preliminary investigation showed the students were stabbed to death. There is no indication that substance use was involved in the deaths, Mabbutt said.

Kaylee’s sister mentioned a second weapon. Entire transcript of her victim impact statement at link.

Where is the murder weapon, the clothes you wore that night?
What did you bring into the house with you?
What was the second weapon you used on Kaylee?

No one is scared of you today. No one is intimidated by you. No one is impressed by you. No one thinks that you are important. You orchestrated this like you thought you were God. Now look at you, begging a courtroom for scraps.
You spent months preparing and still all it took was my sister and a sheath.
You worked so hard to seem dangerous, but real control doesn’t have to prove itself.
The truth is, the scariest part about you is how painfully average you turned out to be. The truth is, you're as dumb as they come, stupid, clumsy, slow, sloppy, weak, dirty.
Let me be very clear. Don’t ever try to convince yourself you mattered just because someone finally said your name out loud.
I see through you.
You want the truth. Here’s the one you’ll hate the most. If you hadn’t attacked them in their sleep, in the middle of the night, like a pedophile, Kaylee would have kicked your f***ing ass.

There was a lot of talk early on about which "genealogical DNA" testing or companies they used. Confirmation that Othram was involved.

During the initial forensic examination, investigators recovered unknown male DNA from the snap of a knife sheath found near one of the victims. Traditional STR testing was used to generate a DNA profile, which was then submitted to the CODIS database. However, no match to a known individual was found.

At the time, Othram had an existing contract with Idaho State Police Forensic Services (ISPFS) to support forensic DNA analysis. The two organizations had successfully collaborated on cold cases in the past. However, this marked the first time ISPFS considered applying Othram’s advanced technology to an active, real-time homicide investigation. Investigators reached out to determine whether Othram’s forensic sequencing and genealogical tools could help identify the source of the unknown male DNA and move the case forward.

Representatives from Idaho State Police Forensic Services and the Moscow Police Department personally transported the forensic DNA evidence to Othram’s laboratory in The Woodlands, Texas. Using the same forensic DNA evidence that had previously been used to generate the STR profile, Othram scientists applied Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing® to develop a high-resolution SNP profile. The profile was developed in a matter of days, reflecting the urgency of the active investigation where a continued public threat would continue to exist until the suspect could be identified.

This was an unprecedented process at the time, demonstrating that high-resolution forensic DNA profiles could be generated real-time to support active investigations.

Shortly after the development of the SNP profile, forensic genetic genealogy enabled law enforcement to identify close relatives of the unknown suspect. These leads quickly converged on a single individual, Bryan Kohberger.

In December 2022, investigators collected a DNA sample from discarded trash outside the Pennsylvania home of Kohberger’s parents, where he was visiting during winter break. A forensic DNA profile was developed from the discarded trash and then compared to the forensic DNA profile generated from the crime scene evidence. The comparison helped law enforcement link Bryan Kohberger to the crime scene.

This case exemplifies why Othram was built—to overcome the limitations of traditional forensic DNA technology and bring certainty to investigations, whether current or cold. It marks the beginning of a new era in criminal justice, where answers are possible for everyone, regardless of circumstances, origin, geography, or time.

My opinion on the why is that with everything he had learned, he thought he would baffle the police.

He thought he was smarter than everyone else.
I totally agree with you. And that picture he took in the shower right after the murders? I think that was his way of saying “yeah I did it! Everything went perfect perfectly!”

But why particularly those victims? Had he a grudge against one or more of them? How did he choose them.

I can't remember where I heard this, but one of the girls was his main target, it's believed.

So, I'd think maybe it was an obsession that only he knew about, or she blew him off when he approached her once.

Just theories.

I saw one detective talking about a different case. He said 100 things can go wrong in a planned murder. If you can take care of 50, your doing great.

Imagine the outcome is he hadn't lost that sheath.

Who knows? Why do serial killers choose certain victims?

I still think he was in that house previously at one time or another.
Me, too. It was most likely a party house and he probably invited himself to one or even was invited by somebody in the house. When roommates have a party, especially in college, there will be people you didn't know there and you assume one of your roommate know them.

Problem is we may never know for sure. Many think it was Maddie BUT I think some of that is just process of elimination, etc. Theoretically he wouldn't have known Kaylee was "home" there. He did not know imo Ethan was there either. Xana is unlikely, she had a boyfriend and he did not head right for her or fhem.

I think it may have also been Maddie who thought she had a stalker once.

However, all of these things are speculation at best and not proven. There could be no connection or he just picked a group who seemed to have it all, a ton of friends, attending parties and being invited wherein he was not having a life like that.

Personally I am not going to speculate on it as he WANTS us to. The creep purposely held back his why, etc. to maintain control over all of us, the family, LE, the public. I'm not going to feed the ugly evil monster.

They would still have had the phone and vehicle data though. That's how they identified him so they could take the trash from his parents house.
But a decent attorney could easily put doubt in somebody only driving by. The DNA on the sheath is what nailed him. The DNA is what they matched in the trash run, too. The trash dive would have done them no good without that DNA on the sheath because they would have had nothing to test it against.

True but i think the phone and car would have been enough on its own. He didn't just drive by once but went there several times i thought.

Anyway, it wasn't needed in the end due to his guilty plea.

Was that new DNA process approved in Idaho already, because they are still trying to get it approved in NY, LISK case, I know.
