Killer who stabbed 4 Idaho students to death still at large

The killer — or killers — who stabbed four University of Idaho students to death remained at large Tuesday, prompting many students to leave the campus in the idyllic small town despite police assurances that there was no imminent risk to the community.

So many students had left the scenic tree-lined campus in Moscow, Idaho, by Tuesday that university officials said a candlelight vigil scheduled for the next day would instead be held after the Thanksgiving break.

The students, all close friends, were found dead in an off-campus rental home around noon on Sunday, and officials said they likely were killed several hours earlier. Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt told the Spokane, Washington-based television station KXLY that her preliminary investigation showed the students were stabbed to death. There is no indication that substance use was involved in the deaths, Mabbutt said.

Gary Jenkins, the former Pullman, Washington, police chief and current Washington State University police chief, also opened up to ABC News, shedding light on his own interaction with Kohberger, who was a criminology Ph.D. student at WSU at the time of the murders.
Kohberger was one of four students Jenkins interviewed over Zoom for an intern position in April 2022, but the chief didn't select him.
"This particular position, it requires someone who can develop trust and rapport with my staff, and these are police officers," Jenkins said. "In talking with [Kohberger], he didn't have a real conversational manner about him. He didn't come across as particularly personable, and I just didn't think he would be able to develop that trust and rapport."
Months later, on Dec. 20, 2022, Jenkins said he got "chills" when Kohberger's name was brought up in the quadruple homicide investigation.
"The hair on the back of my neck stood up," Jenkins said.

If I could only listen to one victim impact statement - this would be the one, given by Kaylee’s sister, Alivea Goncalves.

Alivea Goncalves brought anger, not tears, to her victim impact statement as Bryan Kohberger was sentenced to a life behind bars for the murders of four Idaho college students stabbed to death in 2022.

"Sit up straight when I talk to you," Alivea Goncalves, the older sister of Kaylee Goncalves, demanded of Kohberger in court. "You are not profound, you’re pathetic."

The courtroom filled with applause after Alivea Goncalves' fiery, emotional statement, which aimed at Kohberger's ego.

We just gathered around the computer and listened to it at work. Wow!

How many watched the victim impact statements? I watched the ones from the two roommates and some of the other family members. So heartbreaking!

In a couple of the victim impact statements they mentioned a second weapon, but I also watched the pressor afterward and law-enforcement said there wasn’t a second weapon that they were aware of. I wonder where the family came up with a second weapon?

I don’t think I'm going to watch them. I followed along on X and got the big picture. For a change it just feels intrusive, which is different for me. I think it might have been reading about Dylan and Bethany that did it for me.

Yes, they were hard to watch but I wanted to hear them. I feel so horrible for what they've gone through. And SHAME on the some of the public for tormenting them!

Same as you. The roommates and Kaylee’s sister.

Regarding a second weapon, a criminology guy I follow said if there was one, it doesn’t necessarily mean it was a second knife or something we’d typically think of as a weapon. It could have been that he grabbed a lamp and hit her, a water bottle, etc.

Oh yeah! Kaylee's sister was really well done.
