Got my Masters degree from here. :(

Killer who stabbed 4 Idaho students to death still at large

The killer — or killers — who stabbed four University of Idaho students to death remained at large Tuesday, prompting many students to leave the campus in the idyllic small town despite police assurances that there was no imminent risk to the community.

So many students had left the scenic tree-lined campus in Moscow, Idaho, by Tuesday that university officials said a candlelight vigil scheduled for the next day would instead be held after the Thanksgiving break.

The students, all close friends, were found dead in an off-campus rental home around noon on Sunday, and officials said they likely were killed several hours earlier. Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt told the Spokane, Washington-based television station KXLY that her preliminary investigation showed the students were stabbed to death. There is no indication that substance use was involved in the deaths, Mabbutt said.

I'm confused by the statement made by Prosecutor Thompson how the state could not offer evidence that BK planned to kill all four victims. He plead guilty to four counts of first degree murder.

First-degree murder exists when the defendant:
Uses poison, lies in wait, or shows any deliberation or premeditation in executing the act
So BK had to show deliberation or premeditation in each of the four murders he admitted doing. Maybe I'm missing something.

A requirement of the plea deal I suppose.

I don't think the P could have proven planned intent on all four, however, once heading to attack them premeditation can be seconds. They are simply saying I think he didn't go there with the intent of all four, or they couldn't prove that at trial.

I is a bit confusing.

I guess the prosecutor when saying there's no evidence of planning means BK didn't plan in advance of arriving at the murder scene to kill all four people only some of them? Some were only collateral damage?

I think it is probably because he entered by the second floor sliding door and went straight upstairs to the third floor to murder, which shows intent to murder. Then when he came back down he accidentally encountered the third victim and killed her and her boyfriend then left the scene. The other two who survived were on the ground floor. I don't know if he maybe didnt see her as he left the scene but she saw him. If he saw her i am surprised he did not kill her too.

So, to me, it seems that he particularly planned that first killing by heading immediately upstairs.

I never really understood the layout of the house until i read that.

He pled guilty to a felony charge of burglary, too. That will get you 1st degree murder.

Casey Anthony was more of a slam dunk than this one. Robert Durst dismembered a guy and was found not guilty.
No deal there though and lot of things are not comparable. The P here did an exceptional job. Also seems to me most of the Anthony case was nothing but mostly circumstantial evidence. I'm not going to compare as I don't see any similarities but you feel free to go ahead.

That's not true of the roommates, one was on the same floor as Xana and her bf, the other one was a floor lower.

If he didn't know Kaylee was in town then Maddie was clearly his target.

Yes but she had just gone down to the ground floor/first floor to get a Door Dash delivery, as i understand it.

Yes, I believe that was possible about Kaylee with the other murders being considered collateral by him perhaps? Not sure we will ever know completely, unless he talks in jail.

There were three floors.

Third floor: Kaylee and Maddie
Second floor - with the sliding glass door / back door in the kitchen: Xana and Ethan AND Dylan
First floor - front door to the main road and parking: Bethany

Dylan only went down to the first floor after having seen BK.
Xana was on the second floor. She very likely went to the first floor to get her food delivery then came back up. There is some speculation she went up to the third floor after hearing a commotion. But she was on the second floor.
